The only VW's i'm interested in are the TDI's.

Now that's an engine.

When they work and when they're not in the shop.
I was seriously looking at buying a Jetta Sports Wagon TDI until I started reading the VW Service Dept horror stories by frustrated new owners.
Add to that the now higher price of diesel fuel over reg gas....
I love the idea of the TDI. It just didn't seem like a wise investment. Maybe they'll get more reliable after awhile.
I ended up buying a used Toyota. At least they're dependable.

Back in the early '70s I had one of these:

It was a '64 with a 50 HP engine that I rebuilt myself using this wonderful book:

Yeah, it's really hit or miss, they're either extremely dependable or just a failure. The newer VWs are kinda meh in book, anything after 1995 isn't really on my likes list, although there are a few examples that I would love to have. Rather have an Audi otherwise...

VWs after 1993 are assembled in Mexico. Sadly Audi is following suit and it seems that starting in the next few years, my beloved dream luxury car is off to Mexico...

Man, I love air-cooled VWs, they're so simple!

I had a 66 Bug that my father and I stripped down to just a frame, shortened and made a welded roll cage buggy out of... and I had a 73ish(?) Super Beetle (pre curved windshield version) that I drove for a couple years. I had that repair book too :) Not the same as the thread's intent, but as a fan of air cooled, rear engine German cars, I also had a 67 911. After the reality of repair/replacement parts hit a couple months in to ownership, I flipped it at a little bit of a loss.

The original bug, and the original porche was designed by the same guy.
actually, the guy who designed the 911 was the Beetle's designer's Grandson. Both were named Ferdinand, the Beetle designer died a decade before the 911 was created... the Grandson (911 designer) just passed away last month. [edit] unless you mean first ever Porsche brand car, then yes, the Elder Ferdinand was the designer of both :) [/edit]

I also have a couple diesel rabbits, a '81 truck and '82 a four door model. They are fun to drive, like a go-cart. and thrifty. I can actually pull a little fishing boat with the truck. (probably the 4-door too if I had a hitch) It doesn't go anywhere fast but once it gets up to speed i can cruise along.

I got the 4-door as a parts vehicle but with a little work it now runs better than the truck. Chickens were roosting in it when I bought it. So I had to replace the interior. :( I still find a feather occasionally.

I knew some folks who put a Porshe engine in their '67 bus. It had faster acceleration than any bug on the streets at that time. They liked to pull up alongside bugs at stop lights, gun the engine and challenge them to a race. The bus always won.
Don't know what the HP was.
