Well... yes :)

Some suppliers use Chinese-sourced nic, some use US sources.

When e-cigs first arrived, the tobacco industry did of course object, and joined the anti groups. That changed about a year ago when an alternative income stream from smokeless tobacco products began to look like a good idea, because it became clearer that cigarettes would eventually be squeezed hard by regulations in order to force usage down.

Since that time, the resistance has been mainly from the pharma industry (who will lose sales of NRTs in a big way), and various anti-smoking groups, who are against any type of tobacco or nicotine (or indeed pleasure?). There is an argument that the anti groups would not exist except for pharma support, but that is another matter. Essentially, BT has stopped its opposition, which most likely means they are planning their own e-cig models - to be introduced as soon as the legal status of the industry has stabilised.

As you imply, the tobacco industry has control of agricultural resources, manufacturing, distribution, and marketing; and as they will need the income stream from e-cigs eventually, they are now in wait-and-see mode. The role of smokeless tobacco products was in a state of flux until recently, but most commentators would say that time has passed, and such products could well be a significant proportion of the industry in the future.

BT is like any major industry - very slow to catch on at first, but realists in the end, as they need to keep the money flowing.

I agree with Roly. It is likely that BT has had its R&D on this for some time now and has a prototype at the ready once a legal pathway is cleared. My concern is, as so many have posted, that BT will use its clout and enormous resources to make clandestine deals with the FDA regarding regulations that will serve the best interest of BT, give the FDA political cover while virtually eliminating most, if not all, the e-cig competition.

It's guaranteed. Not because bt is particularly evil, but because that's how large corporations of every stripe roll.

It's done this way: raising the "barrier to entry". They lobby for regulations requiring expensive licensing or permitting of some sort as a one-time or infrequently recurring thing. The cost is such that the corporation can eat it without too much pain, but startups will have problems raising that kind of money, effectively locking them out. The legislators like this because it increases revenue (from the fees) and makes them look like crusaders keeping the corporations in check.

It will happen. In the meantime, however, some ecig and juice manufacturers will become large enough to overcome the barrier to entry, so it won't destroy the non-bt portion of the industry completely. It will change the nature of things quite a lot, though, and you won't find any more mom-and-pop operations.

so, i started wondering...

why wouldn't BT be actively supporting Vaping... I mean where does our nic juice come from? tobacco... who makes tobacco.... BT...

hrmmm... one and one equals.......

At least until we can mass produce Tomacco plants. Then that would REALLY put a kink in all the anti-tobacco laws since the nicotine didnt come from a tobacco plant. But then I guess it wouldnt fall under the FDA tobacco regulations and would become a drug. d'oh!!
