im am preparing for this FDA nonsense and i bought 16 liters of 100 MG base. i need a good long term storage solution. i bought the product from MFS and it comes in plastic bottles. im going to have to re-bottle in glass. do i use 1 liter glass bottles or break it down further. where is the cheapest place to buy glass bottles? do they need to be colored bottles or just kept out of sunlight. if i freeze the product soon, it will be in a dark freezer and shouldn't matter if its colored or not.

I'd break it down into 250 ml bottles for a few reasons. First, when you actually need nic for DIY, you only have to warm up a 250 ml bottle rather than a liter. Keeps the rest a bit fresher longer. Second, if a bottle does break, you don't lose the entire liter. This place is pretty good for bottles, Glass Bottle Outlet Glass Bottle Outlet

I have two liters from MFS, also. I plan to break it down into 250ml sizes in glass bottles for the freezer. Since HDPE and other plastics are more likely to allow oxygen to pass through the plastic, I'm planning on using glass bottles.

It's a shame that there's not a good alternative to glass. Breakage would be hard to clean up. I'm thinking of using a vacuum sealer that seals the glass bottle in plastic in case one gets cracked for some reason.

Thanks for the link. I checked it out and they sell Boston Rounds. I have Boston Round 60ml clear dropper bottles that I use for DIY and then transfer the juice to 60ml HDPE bottles with tops that fit my Kayfun fill ports for actual use once I get the mix right. Boston Rounds are good bottles. I like the larger mouth on the BR bottles for scale mixing.

So, is Cobalt Blue or Brown better for freezing and for preventing light intrusion?

The preference is best based on the aesthetics of your kitchen and freezer. I have zero clue why one would be better than the other. I use blue 30 ml bottles for some mixes because they look cool on my desk, and brown 60, 120, and 240 ml bottles because my finger hit add to cart before the blue ones were on the screen.

There may be someone here who has a sound reason for making a choice and will weigh in, but I know of zero difference, other than the color. Certainly won't be the first time I was wrong.

I have read somewhere that the brown bottles are better for diffusing the light, but not being a bottle expert I cannot confirm that. On most sites the brown bottles are cheaper though.

Myself - no matter what bottle I use it will be in a box or some other type of opaque container and the bottles will never see the light of day unless I open the box...

I also read somewhere on here that the brown bottles are the best for keeping light out followed next by the blue ones.

It's all a filtering aspect of colored glass. UV light may be what needs to be filtered. Even clear glass filters UV light to some extent. It's why my Transitions eyeglass lenses don't turn dark behind the windshield.

Blue and Brown are probably much better than clear glass.

It may be overkill, but I break down my nic in 250ml amber Boston round bottles each wrapped in black bubble wrap. Then vacuum sealed, placed in a sealed box, and in the freezer. Everything is labeled at each step of the process. My intent is, when breaking into a 250ml bottle (poor choice of term there ), it will go into a 120ml bottle with the remaining going into 30ml bottles taken out of the freezer as needed. Then again, I have nowhere near 16 liters of nic.

As far as the cheapest place to buy bottles, I would only suggest checking each site for bulk discounts.....something I have never paid much attention to.

GlassBottleOutlet has by far the cheapest prices on any of the colored Glass Boston Round Bottles. For example, I ordered their Amber Glass Boston Round bottles, all with the polycone caps, and got:

2oz. (60mL) for $.41 each
4oz. (120mL) for $.48 each
8oz. (240mL) for $1.18 each

Before buying them...I'd compared the other top places recommended, and GBO beat them price-wise by a bunch! Several of the other places also had way higher S/H costs, too...was nearly what the bottles themselves cost, and in 1 case...it was more than the bottles!

Edit: Also, something to remember is that you don't need a whole bunch of the smaller sized bottles, since they're only used when you "break down" 1 of whatever your largest size bottle is. For example, I got (4) 8oz. (240mL) bottles to break down each liter I bought. Those held 960mLs of each liter. I left the extra 40mLs in the container at that time, and recapped it.

I split up all my liters like that first...filling just the 8oz. (240mL) bottles. When I was finished with those, I capped them, labeled each bottle, wrapped them individually in bubblewrap, and then they went into an outer Priority Mail cube-shaped 6 x 6 x 6" box (it holds 9 of the 8oz. bottles very nicely, by the way). When all those were sealed up and the outer box was labeled and put in the freezer...then I dealt with the remaining 40mLs that were left in each liter bottle it came in. Since I only bought 4 liter bottles of Nic base...I combined those extra 40mLs into (3) 2oz. (60mL) bottles, capped them & labeled them, and they went into yet another small, Flat Rate, recycled PM box. Taped and labeled it, and into the freezer it went! I'll use up the Nic base in those smaller bottles first (removing just 1 at a time from the freezer to use as my "working" bottle), and then I can reuse them each time I need to break down 1 of the 8oz. (240mL) larger bottles in the future. I just needed to add 1 more 2oz. bottle to those 3, so I'd have enough to break down a 240mLs bottle later.

Doing it that way, it really cut down on the total number of bottles I needed to buy. In your case, you'd need (4) 8oz. (240mLs) bottles for each liter you bought. I'd then combine all the little 40mLs left in your 16 liter bottles (which would be 640mLs)... into (2) more of the (240mLs) 8oz. bottles. Those 2 will hold 480mLs of that 640mLs. Put the remaining 160mLs into (3) 2oz. (60mL) bottles. Put 2 of those into your freezer. Leave the one that's not quite full out of the freezer...to use as your working bottle when making some eliquids.

So, here's what you'd need if you did the above:
(64) 8oz. (240mL) bottles w/polycone caps (holds most of the 16 liters)
(2) 8oz. (240mL) bottles w/polycone caps (holds 480mLs of the extra 640mL)
(4) 2oz. (60mL) bottles w/polycone caps (holds the remaining 160mLs) + the 1 more needed when breaking down a 240mL bottle later.

Extras recommended in case of breakage later:
(2) more of the 8oz. above
(2) more of the 2oz. above

TOTAL Bottles you'd need that way, with extras:
(68) 8oz. Amber Glass Boston Round with Polycone Caps

$48.14 - Sold by the tray of 48 at a discount @ $1.002 each
$23.60 - For 20 singles of the same bottles @ $1.18 each

OR, you could use these instead, breaking down each liter into larger 16oz. Amber Glass Boston Round Bottles with Polycone Caps, and using a few more 2oz. bottles each time you break a 16oz. bottle down. Even including a couple extras of each size...it would save you even more $$:

(36) 16oz. Amber Glass Boston Round Bottles with Polycone Caps
$46.98 - Sold by the case of 12 @ $15.66/case. Order 3 cases

Glass Bottle Outlet is who I bought from , I went with 120ml , clear so I can see what is going on inside, some of these bottles will be untouched for 30 years, I putt two in a single quart zipp-lock baggie with the date on the bag and the bottle is labled with date manufacturer , mg strength, pg %, 120ml is what I work out of from the fridge to make juice

I would order 15 liter bottles, one .5 liter bottle one 250ml bottle and a couple of 120ml bottles. Store most of it in liters and then as needed break one down in to the smaller bottles. Breaking it all down now will take up way to much space and I believe that nic. stores better in larger containers (but that is not the main point) it's about taking up way to much space if you break it all up now.

For What It Is Worth.....and just that, as I will not discourage anyone from doing what they feel is right. I just opened a bottle (1liter) of nic from MFS yesterday. I had finished the one I was working out of. I also had a FRESH (like days old fresh) bottle I had just ordered. The previously frozen bottle was still in its original packaging (plastic bottle). For grins I made a batch of cheesecake with both bottles. One the fresh, one the frozen. The frozen had been stored for more than 1 year (about 14 months). I mix at 6mg final and I could not tell the difference between the two. Could that change? I do have about 25 years of nic stored, yes I guess it could. After 14 months however, zero noticeable change in my humble opinion both in clarity and flavor.

I am just throwing this out there, as I feel a lot of this storage stuff is creative marketing and overkill.

For the short term, like 1 to 2 years, I would leave it in plastic as I cannot imagine that much of a difference, especially in a freezer. The problem we run into here is how to store for 5, 10, 15, or even more years. Best practice is to store in a nonreactive container that will for the most part keep out air. Tough to do with plastic. So for the long haul, glass makes more sense and is pretty cost effective for the period of time you will expect that nic to last for.

I recently bought some promo "premium" nic on sale at Heartland. They offered it in 120 ml plastic bottles, and I got 5. I was thinking about what to do with them and decided I would simply start using them for my DIY now, and as I'll use them up in maybe 2 years, I'll just leave them in those sealed plastic bottles, opening them as necessary.

Thanks, JCinFLA! After reading your post about bottle sizes and how much storage it would take for 2L of Nic it all started making sense. My wife graciously allotted me the bottom slide out bin in the freezer side of our side by side fridge. The removable drawer slants upward at the rear, but the front part of the drawer is 8"x8"x7"D. The 6" cube box will fit there nicely, leaving half of the drawer empty for additional storage of nic related items. I'll probably put the bottles in heavy ziplock bags inside the box after wrapping with bubble wrap just in case something cracks and leaks.

For a while now, I've been trying to figure out where to put a 5cf mini freezer for nic storage. This is the solution if you aren't afraid of nic contamination. That shouldn't be a problem if it's all wrapped and padded properly.

You're welcome for the bottle info. Glad you found space for it, too, without having to buy a small chest freezer. If I hadn't already gotten one earlier, before even needing nic space, I probably wouldn't have either.

And about the above...I agree with you about no problem with Nic contamination, when it's properly stored.

Maybe the powers that be in Congress will inject some sense into the FDA and relax most of these new requirements. There's room for both tobacco behemoths and the vaping industry to make a profit.

If nothing else, they've sent a large part of the pre-mixed juice industry into peoples' kitchens. It's proof that where there's a will there's a way. It's exactly what happened with Prohibition.

There's still room for vendors to sell flavors and other DIY products, tools, and utensils. That market will only grow. Looks like we are beefing up the glass bottle market a bit, also!

Thanks for the info JC.

You're welcome! Glad you got some ordered.

By the way, if you price the same bottles & caps at Packing Options Direct, and at Specialty Bottles (2 more commonly recommended places)...I'll bet you'll get "sticker shock" at those places! I just love GBO for the best total price.
