The mesh is actually a thin porous metal mostly used as filter in high heat situation that would destroy a regular filter. Porous Metal Media from Applied Porous Technologies, Inc..

The filament is almost identical to the filament in light bulbs. In fact, I have rebuild an atomizer that had a bad coil wire with the wire filament inside broken light bulb (not fun since the device is so small). The material that the filament is wrapped around something I have not identified yet but probably what ApOsTle51 suggested. The filament does not bond to any solder I have so you have to put a dot of solder on the end of the connecting wire and try to get the filament in the middle of the dot. You can also loop the end of the wire like a soap bubble maker and solder the filament in that way. The problem is that the bigger the coil you have, the more voltage (current) you need to heat the combination of coil and low conductive porous metal. If you are able to make a atomizer, let us know! I would love to see it.
