I'm curious what everyone's preference is.

The main reason I am asking, is because pretty much all I use nowadays is either my kayfun, or my RDAs.

I don't have the time to try a TON of different coil builds, so I figure I would add everyone's collective experiences to mine, and shorten the process of picking a coil build.

Right now, I wrap my coils around a 5/64" drill bit, and do it micro-coil style. I've tried smaller, 3/34" drill bit, but I prefer the bigger drill bit.

I'm thinking of trying a macro coil.

So, what do you guys like the best for the kayfun?

What type? What gauge?

I've tried a few - 2mm minis, 1mm micros, less than 1mm nanos, dual nano coils and even Rip trippers "tricro" coil. Always use cotton as a wick. But I've also tried vertical coils and horizontal coils including "dragon nano" coils.

Each one has it's merits.

The mini coils seem to last longer and are a lot easier to rewick, consistently give great flavour and vapour.
The micro and nano coils give better flavour and vapour, but need changing more often. Plus there's an occasional dry hit, so I have to do a few primer draws.
The tricro coil, for me gives the best vaping experience. But I do have to run it on a regulated mod, cos it needs at least 12 watts to bring out the best vape.

I mainly build using a drillbit, paperclip or fine gauge syringe needle. Mostly with 28 or 30 gauge kanthal, most come in at 1.0 - 1.7 ohms, except some of the dual nano coils that come in at 0.7 - 0.8 ohms.

I've never seen a 3/34" bit, so I assume you mean 3/32", which is BIGGER than 5/64" (3/32 being exactly 6/64). The next smaller common fractional size is 1/16" (which is exactly 4/64").

I happen to like 5/64" myself, with roughly 8 wraps of 28 gauge. It just works.

Yea, sorry, made this post in a hurry.

I prefer the 3/32" , the bigger one, by FAR. Much better vape in my experience.

I do occasionally use the 5/64", but I think that works best for dual coils in a dripper.

*Disclaimer: all my coils are 29ga (cuz that's all I have) and 1.65mm ID (cuz I've been brainwashed by the microcoil thread and i have an 18ga needle)

When I first started with the kayfun I was running 8 wraps, which is the minimum for a true microcoil. That was great for a while (coming from protanks for over a year straight), but soon I wanted more. So I went seven wraps at around 1.1 ohm. Vape was better, but I'd get the occasional dryhit (no matter how much cotton I used), likely because the small amount of cotton just couldn't keep up.

Next I went to dual coils, nine wraps each at .9ohms. Flavor was great, and the extra cotton i could use from x2 coils meant no dry hits. Problem was, it was extremely warm. I like a bit of warmth (which I had never had until now), but this was too much.

Then I discover this thread, found the cellucotton at Sally's, and after a couple good reports I got some as well. Because of the wicking quality, I knew I could go back to a single coil and be just fine. Decide to try a twisted coil, which would get me to a low ohm while spreading the heat out over a much larger surface area. Used the drill (dremel actually) method and it came out beautiful, like it was from the factory. I ended up at 8 wraps (I think, I'll hafta check when I break it down again) at .7-.6ohms (provari read .7 for a second then faulted, idk). This was lower than i wanted to be, because of the warmth from my dual coil .9 build, but i figured I'd try it anyways.

Stuffed it full on rayon (about 40% more than I'd use with cotton) and proceeded to vape.

Amazing flavor, big clouds, perfect warmth (not as hot as my .9 DC build, weird). Two tanks in and never a dry hit. It's actually STILL krackling every time I hit it (always a sign for me of a new, clean coil/wick), where with cotton the krackle would stop halfway through the tank, if that (I like very sweet juice that caramelizes very quickly).

Rayon really is the solution for microcoils in a Kayfun, and helps this atty specifically a great deal.

I've been using a toothpick to wrap, it's .051" diameter. 30 gauge round, I go with like 7 wraps I believe ( I stopped counting, I just go based on leg lengths after I tighten it all together). Made one yesterday that came out 1.6 and one today at 1.9 ohm. My target usually is 2 ohms, but that 1.6 is nice, I'll have to examine the coil when I have to rewick.

On A SvoeMesto KFL+ V2, I had a ~2.5mm 28g coil at 1.5 ohms. That was a good vape for flavor, not so much for clouds. That was ok by me. Re-coiled and wicked today using 26g ~2.5mm with Organic Japanese cotton, and came out at 0.8 ohms. Well within the limits of the battery, so I figured, what the heck. Threw in some castle long, and went to town.

I felt that the vape was a little too warm, lost some of the flavor due to having to rip on the drip tip to improve airflow, but did have a good throat "thump". I plan on ripping it apart and going up to 1.1 - 1.3 and seeing where that gets me. I liked the 1.5 ohm, but needed more vape out of it.

Running it on a Tarsius 49 brass clone with an 18650VTC5.

My go to is 28ga parallel coil, 8-9 wraps, 1.5mm diameter. Comes out to 1 ohm on the dot every time. Wicked with rayon using it in a DNA30 around 18 watts. It heats up quick but still provides a cool enough vape, great flavor and decent vapor production and density.
I may try this, but with the muji, and on my mech.

When using Japanese cotton on this build make sure you don't choke the wick too much going through the coil or you will get dry hits. Also trapping two stands of wire under the tiny screws is a pain, don't tighten to much, just enough so it doesn't move when you straighten out and raise your coil. Twisted 28ga also works well but not quite as good on vapor production as a parallel.

Nope. Not for me. While I was having a few Long Trails, it was OK. While a little schwilly, OK. Once I sobered up, bleh. Flavor not as good, etc. Same as earlier sentiment.

To BMJ- good advice! This was my first build with the layered cotton, and I just sort of used the same "free-floating" technique I've seen others use. No dry hits, just warm vapor, a little too warm for me.

Rebuilt again with "intolerable acts" from my sorta-local B&M, (a new england style RY4) 50/50 blend, at 1.3 ohms. That worked out to 5 wraps of 28ga on my screwdriver. Great flavor is back. This is as low as I'll go with the kayfun, I think.
