that could be fun- a relative safety thread.....

Hmmm Maybe: How to pick apart/reinforce your base of operation after Z-Day? or How I learned to stop worrying and learned to love the mob?

Sounds like a good thread and resource for survival! Everyone has a different perspective on how to keep 'people' out and others have perspectives on how to get in!

Do you want to start it or should I?

Armored vehicles. Done. You could just let the zombies crawl all over 'em while you sleep, they're not getting in. The movie would be boring, though: that's probably why they don't write them into any of the scripts.

Well normally I'd poke the holes in the other thread but it's here...

First hole, limited fuel for the vehicle to escape the impending horde.
Second hole, if you're in 'bunker' mode, limited fuel (food/water) for the occupants.
Third hole, anyone (human or not) approaching you will be thinking of second hole in one way or another...

BTW, you might enjoy watching The Beast (about a Soviet tank crew in Afghanistan), you might enjoy the commanders views about the options after you run out of fuel...)
See? That just might save your life someday. I decided to alter the Plan A thread to incorporate these ideas.

I used to drive a LVT-P7 (tracked amphibious troop carrier) during my last enlistment.

1) 300 miles on a tank of diesel
2) Flattens zombies dead-dead (I may have taken out a car or two on the tank trails at Camp Lejuene)
3) Amphibious - never seen a zombie swim, except in that MS commercial
4) Got a heater inside - sleepings nice and cozy
5) 4-12 volt car batteries - can you say HV vaping!!
6) Got to go...? We got bilge pumps, pick a spot where no ones sleeping.
7) Ain't no one getting in.
Bye, Bye:D

Is that far enough to outrun ALL the undead?
2) Flattens zombies dead-dead (I may have taken out a car or two on the tank trails at Camp Lejuene)
Gotta get the head or they'll still crawl after you, tirelessly (no pun)
3) Amphibious - never seen a zombie swim, except in that MS commercial
That one wasn't swimming, he was walking on the bottom. No air, no problem!
4) Got a heater inside - sleeping's nice and cozy
Yep, probably right there.

Vape or start the engines... Might make for a difficult choice!
6) Got to go...? We got bilge pumps, pick a spot where no ones sleeping.
Well I guess that's better than 'letting it all hang out' for those that can.
7) Ain't no one getting in.
Also makes it hard for anyone to get out too! Makes bloody MRE's a reality
Bye, Bye:D

I'm still not sold on an APC or tank as a viable getaway tool. VERY bulky means less agility due to Newton's Law and 300 mile range just means you're 300 miles from where you know the terrain! If you putter around your neighborhood you'll just attract the horde since they're anything but quiet.

These are of course only my opinions :D

Yeah, I spent too much time as a driver to let my Bradley run out of fuel when there are thousands of gallons at every truckstop. The covers on most of those tanks don't even lock. People might clean out the gun shops, but pumps and hoses will be around.

Those vehicles aren't parked by themselves, so bring enough friends to man a few of them, so they can support each other. That way, after get moving in the morning, and your tracks are nice and zombie-lubed, you can take turns hosing the stubborn zombies off of each other with the coaxial machine guns (like if you need to pop the hatch to take a leak or something).

I'm not saying it would be a no-brainer (har!), but the threat of death should really help you focus on problem-solving and planning. Nothing simplifies problems and expands options quite like big guns and heavy metal.

so, granted, I don't know much about military vehicles and tanks and such, or even bunkers...but one thing the movies always seem to forget about is that eventually, you're gonna have to go to the bathroom.

You didn't watch Zombieland yet? I figure the only thing required is a gnarled up decaying corpse in your face and you won't have to worry about finding a bathroom... just a clean set of clothes afterwards!

To quasimod, think about the decay in supply chains and alternate use of that fuel. When faced with a total breakdown in society and no further replenishment of 'basic' commodities like fuel, there will be a mad dash to aquire them. Diesel has a decent shelf life, I'll give you that, but how long do you think it'll hold out? My perfect scenario would be holding on to it for things like improvised flamethrower stations or emergency generators or even an 80's Volkswagen Rabbit (diesel) before I'd run it in a fuel guzzling APC. I won't go into how you are going to 'persuade' someone who's currently in possession of said vehicle to transfer operation to you either... or the logistics in feeding the machine guns. Personally, I have over 1k rounds of 5.56 in a can and would make every last one of them count knowing that the ammo plants are shut down in a Z-day situation. That is, after I sourced an AR 15/16 again. Finances forced the sale of my last compact-tac AR. I miss my 1" groups :(

Got that covered -

My ride, except mine was C43. Notice the sloped front. You can pile up the zombies in a big pile then flatten them out like bread dough underneath!:D What ever blood is left splats out on the zombies in front that haven't been squished yet.

Fuel mileage is measured differently between highway miles, and miles driven while smashing through hordes of reanimated human corpses. Ever hit a deer? Forget that VW Rabbit! It's going to look like a wadded up beer can with a full tank of fuel, when you wake up next to it hankering for some brains.

Speaking of the military, where do they disappear to after Z-Day in the movies? I wasn't talking about taking gear from a functioning unit.

I know how to break into a Bradley with a flat-tip screwdriver, if they haven't changed the latch on the co-ax doors in the last 20 yrs. Worst case scenario: boltcutters for the padlock on the driver's hatch. Once inside, you own it.

Oh, yea! That's what I'm talking 'bout! The military hides in those big ships they built for 2012. Hope they get seasick on dry land - wimps!
You see, I live about a mile and a half from the Warren Tank Plant here in MI. They have an awful lot of really big tracked vehicles parked outside on display, the only thing you need is batteries, there's even a gas station across the street.
