So I've been lurking this forum for a few weeks, soaking up information and familiarizing myself with the terminology, and there's one thing that's been eluding me. Why are cigarettes referred to as "analogs?" Analogous to what?

Analog, being the opposite of digital. At least that was my thought.

Yep. That about sums it up. I think for a lot of older guys here at ECF it's also a bit of a way play on words for how old-school cigarettes have become to them. Analog isn't cool anymore. Gotta go digital.
I find it silly myself and I call them plain and simply... Cigarettes.
Yeah, I thought it might be a reference to analog vs. digital but being an electronics guy by trade, that bugs me because e-cigs are analog circuits - a battery, a switch and a resistor, essentially. There's nothing digital about the basic workings of an e-cig. In fact, if I wanted to be really pedantic about it, I could say that it should be ELECTRIC cigarette and not ELECTRONIC. But I'm not that much of a nit-picker... usually.
I guess I'll just keep calling cigarettes cigarettes.

ROFL. A lot of people call cigarettes "stinkies" as well though I find it a bit too feminie/cute of a nickname for them

fully agreed, it sounds stupid if anyone around knows the least bit about electronics. "cancer-sticks", until they find otherwise about ours.
Its just a stupid catch phrase somebody came up with. I dont like it either for the simple reason I dont car to try to explain it. I hate catch phrases cause "aint nobodyn got time for dat" 
Exactly the same here, I just call the eCigs "Vaporizers" when trying to explain o somebody who asks (and they always wonder If I'm holding a mini Hookah and if I'm smoking pot).
In the beginning I wanted to fit in...... so I used analogs.....didn't really like that, so then I went to stinkies (more descriptive) but as a natural progression I dropped that and now just call them cigarettes.
I say cigarettes also. Just call them what they are. Just because others use the term doesn't mean you have to.

I think the reasoning is "Analog" meaning antiquated (analog clock) vs. new age (digital clock) or the digital age of smoking if you will? By the way you'll probably hate my signature....lol

True, but then I guess it all depends on the battery that you use too. A VV/VW mod for example...
