Why are standard tobacco flavorings so incredibly weak and sucky?

It didn't used to be like this.

I used to be able to buy American style and flue cure flavoring that was reasonably potent and tasted like tobacco. Now the same companies are selling flavoring with the same name for twice the price that is MAYBE 1/10th as strong, to the point that it is impossible to mix usefully.

Is there anyone still carrying decent tobacco flavorings?

Does anyone know why they aren't?

I'm a tobacco flavor chaser also! I've personally had to go the diy NET route to find true tobacco flavor. The biggest expense is time. 1+ month extract, 1+month steep time for actual mix. The flavor excellent.
There are retail offerings, including concentrates, at Real Tobacco Extracts and Naturally-Extracted-Tobacco.
For that M.red flavor try net(ing) ohm's natural, ryback regular, Lane's Burly light without bite or a mixture of.
I mix my tobacco extractions 10%-15%. 1oz of tobacco (pipe/leaf/cigar) extracted in PG. There are other extraction methods.
Try; Best tobacco for flavor extraction
Good luck with your search.

these retail offerings: are they flavorings or juices? I prefer to mix my own if possible from flavorings, but im so far avoiding extraction.

They offer both ready to vape juice and concentrate/flavors (diy). Extraction as a whole or just yourself doing it? If its you doing it those retailers will give you a sample of what NETs are all about and flavor you've been missing/looking
for.

I don't understand your problem, I'm not aware of any change in the tobacco ejuice or flavoring scene. Not that I've bought much lately, but it still seems likely you're seeing an isolated case. Specifics would be needed to even know what you're talking about. Small changes in flavorings is not unusual, and not just tobaccos.

The quality of tobacco flavorings has always spanned a huge range. I've been moving towards lighter mixes myself, with the improvement of my sense of taste and hardware this seems the real secret of producing a cigarette-like experience.

I've started taste testing the tobacco flavours that I have in stock, and am not coming up with cigarette type flavours, but flavours that border on pipe tobacco.
    Synthetics or NETs?
If it's NETs try to find the ryo (roll your own) type of tobacco. Ohm is the brand I use. American spirit is another. Or use just the tobacco leafs. You can purchase just a Virginia, burly, ect leaf with nothing else. There is a b.a.st.a.rd blend that gives you 3 different type of tobacco separated individually so extraction can be done the same then mixed to users liking. I also get a pipe like taste in some of my nets but usually in premixed tobacco blends. Cigar flavor in others. It depends on tobaccos used in the mix.

No, it's just the synthetics at this stage.
I am just entering into the tobacco flavoring arena, so am adopting the slow and steady approach.
Thanks for the info on available tobaccos, but unfortunately they are out of my reach as I am in New Zealand.
When I get to that stage though I will look at the RYO route as you suggested.

Use any tobacco you have available in New Zealand except a pack of ciggs. Soak tobacco in pg for a month or longer, filter, mix, steep. Oh yes, enjoy.
I have not used ethyl alcohol (pga) method (yet). I understand that it is a cleaner method but I do not want to any alcohol in my juices. That said, I have no choice when using other flavorings ie. Real Flavor Super Concentrates (rfsc) cream, blueberry, banana only. Let it breathe off.
The filtering of the NET is the key to any method you use. I filter 3 times though coffee filters and a freeze filter. I'm able to use 10-20 ml before having to rewick/coil dependant on tobacco used.

I make my own NET and it is a pain, but its worth it......
You mentioned a "freeze filter" what is that?
I filter mine at least 3 times, and they still dont give me much time on a wick and coil.

I have been buying some of the Inawera tobacco concentrates to "cushion" my supply of tobacco, which I vape like a fiend. So far they are really good. Might even try to cut my NET with some of them to see if I can get more mileage.

PS, as to the "why" in your original post.... I think most people that vape use tobacco that is usually flavored with sweet over tones. It going to be practically impossible to find the dry , slightly tart, genuine flavors.

Many have turned to making high VG which automatically makes it sweet, have you ever tasted plain VG? You'd swear it had sweetener in it. High VG has been a trend for the reason it does put out larger, more dense clouds and at higher temps like people like to vape, its smoother on the throat.

I myself cant tolerate lower than 50/50 PG or I get a sore throat.

MOst people also dont like the dry , grassy, leafy skunky more pure NETs. Cigars surprised me, when I think of cigars I remember strong, harsh, leafy taste. But the cigar extract you get as NET is very delicate and wonderful, you do have to let them soak for double or longer to get the full flavor and those that manufacture them find that not worth it.

If you want to buy ready mades then , Naturally Extracted Tobaccos . net are my favorite. GROSS, dirty, coil destroyers, but worth it.

I agree with the coil/wick problems come from sugar(s). VG usually made from palm and coconut. The palm has less sugars. All plants have some % of sugars. Different tobaccos and mixes of will have different percentages. Look at the sweet synthetic liquids; coil killers all. Less sweet less coil kill.
As for the freeze filter; I place the 3 filtered pg NET in freezer for 24 hrs or longer. It will have sentiment; waxes, sugars(?), and other particles. I siphone off the top running it through a filter leaving the sentiment. You can also run total content while in freeze mode through a filter.
No one will find a true burning tobacco flavor! Its NOT combustion! Vaping give true tobacco flavor(s) that are usually burned off.

I like the two Hangsen's I've tried. (Indian tobacco and Desert Ship) Other than the the NET site listed above is good, although not cheap. Vaping Zone Super concentrated line of tobaccos is nice last time I had them, but admittedly that was years ago.

I have tried tons as well and now just stay with a few Hangsen tobacco's myself .

Never tried NETS and i'm sure i would like them but i'm pretty lazy at this point & even making an effort to grab the remote a foot a way is a major accomplishment & requires advanced planning.

Check out Backwood Blends. I picked up a bottle of their RY4 recently. It has a very please to tobacco flavor to it. In fact for me it's too much so from what I read it will probably be right up your alley.

I'm curious. Who is selling these altered flavorings to you? Bull City Flavors has Super Concentrates with many good tobaccos, very potent. The Honey Flue Cure is very good. Inawera also has several potent tobaccos and additives. You did say you mix your own, yes?
