Why buy the $70+ starter kits??

Just a little topic I want to talk about (with the newbie section being great for it): why would most people want to purchase the very expensive starter kits that most websites promote? Usually, they come with 2 batteries, 5-10 cartilages, a wall charger, a USB charger, a e-cig box, a carrying case, and all sorts of stuff - however, why buy all that junk? For me (and many, many people), I naturally carry around a wall-to-USB converter for my Iphone, so automatically, I don't need a wall charger for my e-cig. Every (much cheaper) $30 kit out there comes with a USB charger at least. On top of that, I don't carry a purse or wear parachute pants, so an E-Cig carrying case or box wouldn't come close to being convienent to me beyond the charge factor. Third, while having a back-up or one manual/one automatic battery can be nice (especially if one fails), on a normal case scenario I just don't see how most folks go through the batteries - there's plenty of times to charge them, sleeping, work, in a restaurant, shopping, ect ect. And ten cartilages? They're no more expensive as a regular add-on, especially if you simply look up a discount code: codes are everywhere.

I'm just saying this because it seems like a lot of people plunge into dishing out $70 at one time, and IMO, it seems really unneeded, especially if you don't know if you like the brand or not, and don't know if they'll refund you. For instance, Volt has a $30 kit that has the battery, 5 cartilages, customizable size+colors+LED, and the USB charger all for $34 right now ($28 with VOLTMOM %20 discount which is surprisingly not unvalid yet...), ePuffer has the new Nano kit (same stuff included) for $25 with a discount, and most other websites also have either the $30 kits or accesories to build a kit with for the same price. So why spend more on stuff one may not need? Actually Volt has the $20 kit (which is like $16 with VOLTMOM) which has the whole e-cig, 2 cartilages, and a USB if you don't mind having an ugly e-cig, lol (which, Volt has cool e-cig wraps for like $5) Or any other brand, Blu, Halo, V2, none of them go above $30 if you dig and deal. Heck, if you just need something to store your cartilages in, Volt has a Cartilage Case for FIFTY CENTS (should fit any cartilages of the same size).

For instance, if you get Volt's $20 starter kit, and a extra box of $8 cartilages, you get more than you do in the $30 kit, especially when you use discounts. If you stay smart about the purchases, you can find yourself really getting more for the buck than the usual kits may be worth. However, if you need every single thing in the kit, there's no reason not to spend the cash needed!

Some people really need or want that "junk." I do not have an I-phone and I always use my wall charger *and* my usb charger. I also carry a purse, like most women, and a backup battery is an absolute must in case one fails.

I don't know what you mean by "cartilages" but I think you mean cartomizers? Or do you mean really mean cartridges?

You make some good points. I keep reading where people are getting 10 - 15 hours of vaping time on a Volt or 510 battery and that the cartridges last all day, it appears you would not need all of those over-priced extras. Maybe people just need to learn how all these other new vapers make these models work much better.

The e-cig stays hooked up to my desktop.
The wall charger stays in the wall.
The car adaptor lives in my truck.
And the charger case goes with me on the boat when I fish.
I always use a lanyard when fishing, so I don't lose a battery in the water.
So... it's all needed.

My V2 charger case can actually recharge a battery faster than the wall charger (4 times).
The only downside is that it can only store either 2 batteries, or 1 battery and 2 cartridges.
They need to design a case that holds 2 batteries and about 8 cartridges (for weekend trips).

They buy them because they get sent to places like ecigreviews.com rather than coming here. That's how I got started on V2. If I can talk Mom into trying vaping again (bad experience with Blu), I'm going to get her a Volt. And yes, it's not something I would use (my e-power kit arrives tomorrow, yay!). However, she's 69 and technology resistant. I just can't see her filling or refilling cartridges, cleaning attys, etc.

I agree that some starter kits are helpful. It really depends on your needs. E-cigs can be very confusing to a new user, who may not know where to start or what parts to buy separately. Starter kits offer everything a person needs to get started in one package without having to search through all the different parts and figure out what works with what.

A lot of people buy a starter kit in the beginning until they learn more about pvs. A lot of people (like my grandma) can barely use a computer, much less use forums and search websites to do research about something she has no idea about. I got her a starter kit because it came with instructions and had extras of everything. And those extra cartridges/cartos do come in handy for new users that burn them up (like I did).

If you are knowledgeable enough to not need a starter kit, then congrats to you, but they are there to help people who otherwise may not be able find an ecig that works.

For many people $70.00 for a complete kit would have been much better than the ones they purchased at the mall kiosks for several hundred dollars, ask one who has. Moderately good price kits are available at numerous vendors and often cheaper than ala carte. Having back ups is essential even when it comes to chargers and the accessories for your specific unit.

If you've purchased a kit previously and are buying additional batteries that's another issue. However, mixing and matching wih chargers can and will cause problems, as will charging on your laptop and using another cord/plug accessory that is not rated for your set up.

Alot of us have been around for a while and I think that we're more than happy to help answer questions ;) Homework is essential, be sure to read, read and read some more!

Now that its been over 100 days since I had a smoke, and I own several high end APVs/mods, I look back and can see where you are coming from. However it took an overpriced POS starter kit from a bs vendor to get me over the hump until I discovered ECF. So without your post who knows where I would be right now.
What I can tell you is that after 17+ yrs of 2+ PAD, I was able to switch to exclusive vaping overnight because I had what I needed. Now I am an unofficial spokesman for vaping. I carry ECF cards w me everywhere I go and in 3 weeks I have gone thru almost all 50 cards. I have converted half my neighborhood, and they all have the benefit of my experience.
BTW, dont ever charge batts while your sleeping!
Good luck and Vape ON.

Good points made in the OP...
I jumped in with a disposable pack ( Q510), then ordered the Ego-C cause it had everything i thought i needed to get started and the good reviews it had online ( minus the negatives about it leaking from what others say ). After having the Ego-C for a month, i have since ordered Ego Vision Clearomizers ( Stardust ) to compliment my Ego-C batteries.. and after getting the clearomizers, im saying to myself, i never needed the Ego-c kit.. the Clearomizer provides more flavor and vapor than the Ego-c Atomizer and tanks.. but I will say that the Ego-C tanks and atomizer are almost fool proof( have to constantly refill is my isssue ). I have recommended the Ego-C to 6 coworkers and they all have ordered them, and now they all want Clearomizers after seeing me with mine or trying mine.. I havent used my tanks that came with ego-c since getting my clearomizer, but i probably will use them again one day, just not today..lol...
now i have graduated to getting a VV Mod to take Vapin to the next level.. 1 month without Cigarettes..

I started off with a eGo-C back in January, and now upgraded to a ProVari V2 with a J-Tank. I keep thinking the same that I never needed the eGo-C but that starter kit gave me everything I needed for that first 2 weeks to transition into vaping.

All new people I've recommended eGo-C to because they are somewhat of hassle-free (which I think you need at the beginning), because all you care about at the beginning is "Am I getting my nicotine?" Though I never had leaks, I've been told by some people that theirs were leaking. Even my old eGo-C that I gave to my friend, it leaks on him. I believe it is user error but I don't know, I need to go back and use them for a day to see what's up.

if u dont know if u even like a e-cig its not rly necisarry to buy a big set to start. on the other side as a e-cig starter the set mostly provides u with the basic stuff to start of smoking. i wouldnt recomend to start with a bad e-cig copy. i started with an ego c typ a from joyetech. i ordered a big set cause i allready seen the item on my friend who started to smoke e before me. now after 6 month of vaping i got myself a provari and bulli a2-tm. i started to e-smoke because i wanted to save money. the cigarets in germany became quite expensive over the time. jeah i didnt rly save much since i started vaping. but i got tons of e-smoking stuff at home now. i can only advice not to get a bad copy to start with cause u will loose the interest on e-cig fastly.

Because they keep me off of analogs! And that alone is... "Priceless" Because, this is the 12-step program nobody told you existed! We didn't know there were alternatives! We had to educate ourselves the hard and painful way with hard earned money and trial / error.

Bring on every starter kit my NOOB derrière can handle / needs.

ANYTHING to keep me from giving Marlboro one more penny of my hard earned dollars.

BECAUSE my 16 year old will eventually have (God help him if it's before he's 30) kids, and I intend to be around to spoil them rotten.

FOR everyone who is out there who has tried to quit countless times may you find the starter kit that puts you on the path!!!! And then find ECF and figure out what / which combo works for you!

THAT'S WHY!

...steps off of soap box...

I bought the starter kit on purpose because it did come with 2 of everything. My eldest son is a smoker, or rather was a smoker, who started out with the hookah and shisha. As soon as I tried out the e-cig rom the vape shop a few blocks away I hoped I would be able to get him switched over with the e-juice she gave me to start him on (Tiki Juice). It worked! So the extra junk paid for itself with him quitting smoking and quitting the hookah too, I'd have paid triple the price just for that! Plus it worked for me as well so it was well worth the money. I doubt I will ever switch off my starter ego-c , the kid (22) probably will just because he is a gadget kind of guy into the next big thing where I am one of those if it works why switch kind of gals. The gal at the vape shop gave me 2 stardusts and a pack of Kangers so I could try out the different ways to vape, but so far I prefer the plain old ego-c.

Looking back to where I was and to where I am now, I would've spent $500.00 for a good kit. I was that sick of the stinkies. I spent a tad over $300.00 for 3 kits and juices for myself, the wife, and the daughter. We are ALL still vaping. They are still using their original kits. I moved on to the Go-Go and now to the Silver Bullet.
