Who buys $70 starter kits? People who don't have any vaping equipment, and need everything in the kit. Not everyone already has a wall adapter. Not everyone has a wall adapter with an acceptable output to use with the usb charger in question. Most starter kits including two batteries, and atty or two or a tank system (not that I recommend tank systems, but some people like them), maybe a couple cartos, usb charger and wall adapter, smart charging pack if it's a ecig look alike, and possible even a bottle of juice. Often times it's more expensive to buy all those things separately.

Whether it's a good buy or not, really just depends on what you need.

And in the instance of my last purchase, the Lava Tube kit, I really did need everything that came with the kit. The device itself, two batteries (yes you want two, I promise), one atty, a drip tip, a charger, and a case. Every single thing in that kit was necessary; I drip, I need attys, and the standard I have laying around can't touch the high res that came with the kit. Drip tips necessary for a dripper; you can't have too many, they're easy to lose. Since the device uses separate batteries, it's not like I already had that sort of charger laying around. And believe it or not the case was necessary, even though it may not seem so. I couldn't see letting my batteries float freely in my backpack, the clearos I use on the go either, they leak a bit too much for that. I'd never be able to fit all that stuff in my pockets. The case keeps them together, and safe, quite nicely.

So it depends. If you already have compatible equipment for the device you're going to order, yeah you might not want an expensive starter kit. But if you don't....well buying all that separately is probably going to be exactly the same price, if not more expensive.

I agree not all little cases and such or pre-filled cartomisers are a must in some starter kits. However, 1 battery is not a good choice to have unless you are on a big battery mod. Even then, bad call. The other thing is the carts that come in kits can be refilled with liquid for awhile. And if you start to price carts the money can add up quick. Most companies will tell you to use the right wall charger etc. that coincides with their batts volts. All in all, most kits (2 batts minimum) I believe are worth the money for someone starting out. I do agree though that after you have everything to get you started, you can find replacement equipment cheaper per item at other vendors. For example, although I use V2, they charge at least 20 bucks for their smallest batt. Where I have seen standard 280mah batts at other places for 10 bucks. But then V2 has a lifetime warranty on that (with a few snags). Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

I haven't bought an expensive starter kit, but was looking at the Volt.

At first, the $20 kit seems like an attractive option because of the price and I don't know if I'll really like it all that much.

But then I've seen a few posts here saying the Volt is a good place to start as well as suggesting the drugstore brands are cheap and not very good, however I paid just a few dollars less for the Mistic last night and it has exactly the same components as the Volt's basic kit.

Personally I don't care if it's "ugly" or if it looks like a cigarette but I would prefer it not look like drug paraphernalia which some of the setups I've seen on the internet do. (Sure, technically they are drug paraphernalia since nicotine is a drug but I digress).

At any rate, studying the various Volt starter kits it would be much easier for me to go with something beyond just their basic starter kit. If it does turn out I like them I'm going to want 2 batteries for when one goes dead, I'm going to want more cartridges and the portable charging case seems like a really good idea for any time a USB port (or wall outlet) is not readily available and by that point their $65 starter kit seems much more attractive since it has the built-in discount of not buying it piecemeal.

Maaaaan, I bought everytang for my starter kit! For a couple reasons. 1 I don't have anything vaping related... (its coming in the mail soon though!!) 2. I want to make sure there is no possible way that I Can't Vape and therefore my weak mind is forced back to analogs. 3. Because it is so damn cool and I want to collect all the little pieces to the beginning of my new expensive but cheaper than analogs hobby  Oh, and I got the mothers day sale at smokeless image, so 20% off I spent as much as I thought I really needed :p

BTW - There is one thing that I didn't hear mentioned hear. Or even much on the ECF.

And that is the PAD$F/M. (Pack a Day Dollar Factor per Month)

Simply put: I Smoked about a Pack a Day and that cost me about 175 Bucks a Month. Every Month.

So when I consider an e-Cig item, be it the Latest 'n Greatest Carto or some New Mod, I ask my; "Is Buying this Item LESS than the PAD$F/M?"

I bought my First Starter kit because figured if it Only Lasted 2 Weeks it was still Cheaper that Smoking Analogs. (I still have that Kit BTW)

So a Starter kit maybe Somewhat Higher than Piecing out Parts for an Experienced User. But it was, and Still is, Cheaper than Smoking Analogs for 2 weeks for me.

Note: I think it is Kinda Funny when I hear some Member doing a Blue Thunder Rant about some Carto that Doesn't Work just the way they want them to. When the price of a that Cart 5-Pack was less than 2 Packs of Analogs.

LOL

I got the pro starter kit from volt. I didn't want all the extra chargers and passthrough. It came with a pcc, 5 cartos, 2 batteries. It all depends on what you need, but I'm with you, sometimes you can assemble your own kit cheaper. Only thing with the volt is when you buy a kit, you can do add ons for a cheaper price if you do it when you buy a kit.

Another hint. If you are buying ejuice from them to use with a volt system, get a pack of cartos in the same flavor instead of buying blanks. The cost is the same and you end up getting 5ml of juice for free. The volt cartos seem to last a long time and be refilled many times. Why pay $9 for blank volt cartos and fill them with SI juice when you can pay $9 for filled ones

While I agree that we may not need everything in a starter kit (depending on the kit of course), how do we know then when we are new. I am pretty sure I am not the only person who found out about this forum AFTER I started vaping.

ECF has been very helpful to me yes, but as they say hind sight is 20/20

We got a Smoov 808 starter kit for the two of us.. two batteries, one charger/usb combo thingy, 6 cartomizers.. no extra carrying case or anything. We've used everything in it, and have since gotten another starter kit so we don't run out of batteries and can both be charging a battery at the same time. We ended up giving on the the chargers and batteries to my mother in law this weekend, hopefully it will get her off the analogs and we'll be upgrading to better equipment soon. But.. the Smoovs are nice little instruments, we've been happy with them and they got us off the cigars. All is good, and it was money very well spent.

Wow! I couldn't have said it better myself! And Thank You for reminding me of this point! I smoked pack a day cheapo's at 20 dollars a carton. But thats still 60 bucks at the end of the month! I spent 14 dollars last month on vaping!

Now believe me I am on a serious budget! However, let's not forget all the other great things bout vaping. Health, smell, social acceptance, vape most anywhere, etc, etc!
