Why do I have to add 0% nic in a DIY recipe?

If I have a 24mg bottle of 30ml unflavored nic juice, why couldnt I just tweek a recipe for Coffee and pour the entire 30ml over a enclosed filter of ground coffee, let it sit for serveral days (depending how strong I want the flavor), filter it again, then place it into the cartomizer to vape? I would imagine I would loose a portion of the nic juice in the transfer with this process.

Or is it that I need to dilute the nic juice so as to make it less potent with a 0% nic juice?

People have soaked coffee in PG to make coffee flavored juice. Yes, you will have to filter it, or should anyway, to get rid of particulates. The coffee will soak up a lot of liquid though, which is difficult to remove from the coffee solids.

I would not do this with 24 mg juice, as I am guessing you will need to experiment to get it all right, and might end up losing it all. I would be using pure PG, or VG plus water, to make a flavoring that could be added to unflavored nic juice. There may be an issue with storage too, since such a extraction may mold over time. This is often a problem with whole-food extractions, such as what you are considering.

Kurt has very effectively addressed the coffee filtering issue. [I would have been at a total loss.]

I'd like to comment on the 0% nic juice. Yes, it is to dilute high-nicotine juice. It is cost-effective to cut relatively expensive 48mg+ e-liquid with very inexpensive 0mg PG and/or VG.

Combining this common DIY principle with Kurt's advice: If you want to wind up with 24mg coffee-flavored e-liquid, combine equal quantities of the derived 0mg coffee-treated PG (and/or VG and water) and 48mg of nicotine juice. [Since I'm lazy, I'll just mix coffee flavor Tasty Vapor Doubler and E-liquid. Actually, I would go with their Cafe Macchiato.]
