If it is truely water vapor coming out why does hubby say he can smell the flavors?

Because he probably can. I can smell my own vaping, sometimes hours later, lingering in the room. Some flavors, like caramel apple, are outdoors only at my house.
Dekang from the smokeshop, not so much.

Depending on what it is,the smell lingers on your clothing too. People can't figure out why I always smell like candy. 
I just DIY'd a flavor that my beautiful fiancee says is a pleasant smell. We were on the patio with a slight brreeze. I'd guess some flavors are noticable.

Only you can know that.... You will know that you are inhaling it from the sensations you get in your throat. Technique is also a learned thing. I vape like I smoked....one long draw into my mouth, then inhale into my lungs and then immediate exhale. It's up to you to find what is comfortable for you.
Meh, I Inhale plenty and you can still smell it. I vape black and mild or French pipe and my wife says she can smell it but it smells good. If I vape freedom from halo she tells me she almost gags. I just don't vape anything she doesn't like the smell of to avoid the problem entirely.

No, not possible. Makes no difference unless you are going to inhale it and hold it until there is nothing exhaled. Don't do this.
Just be glad you don't have a mustache. Tastes like soup and smells like Boba's Bounty for an all day olfactory and taste adventure. Intriguing, yet gross.

Well lets put it this way........I feel I'm doing something right cause I'm not smoking cancer sticks. It appears to me whatever I'm doing is working.Only you can know that.... Oh and I have found my go to juice if I'm wanting a vape similar to my ciggie taste. Don't laugh but I bet you will. I was smoking roll ya own Hot Rod Super Menthol tubes(similar to the fresh mint taste of Camel crush).......Kissbass has a mint truffle shuffle that is sweeter but leaves the same minty linger taste basically. That is like awesome for me
Some juice has a smell like a faint candle.
Your hubby might also be smelling whatever you use to clean up the mess when you fill your gear. The trash can in my office contains paper towels that I used to clean up juice. And you can smell that. But it's certainly not offensive -- like a stinking ash tray.

Good for you! It always does wonders for your confidence when you fine flavors that "do it" for you. Over time, though...as your taste buds adjust, don't be surprised if the juice seems to lose its flavor. Sometimes its simply that your taste buds are bored and need something else to focus on for a little while....other times...your taste buds have healed enough that the flavor doesn't please you like it did before. I still go through little bouts of juice crisis every now and then....but am happy to report that after a couple years, I do have an all day vape.
I'm just going to carry a carto with the mint truffle shuffle in it for times like after eating because that is when I notice I want my ciggies the most. I vape in the truck. My kids play "name that flavor" when I get them after school.
When my DH was vaping a very subtle Cuban Tobacco, on an 801 atty, known to produce great vapor and flavor, I loved smelling his vapor, especially in close quarters like in car. He didn't like any sweet juice then but the expelled vapor had a sweetness that he wasn't tasting. And, at that time, I had stopped liking vaping anything "tobacco."

Isn't that one just delicious?!? I was also a menthol smoker and tried MANY different menthol juices, but this KBV joose is now my go-to minty vape. Oh and by the way, my preferred analog was Camels no. 9 menthol. I think the subtle creamy chocolate of the mint truffle shuffle is a perfect replacement.
