Why does a dirty coil/atomizer in a cartomizer cause the juice to lose flavor? Just curious!
Going along the lines of what wyojoe has said. When juice has built up and gunked onto the coil. The flavor is diminished due to the juice not making direct contact with the coil. Also, as you fill it up with more e-liquid when you top it off. The taste of burnt nicquid spreads throughout the filler material.
So, you can either clean it or toss it away. But, IMO once this process happens than you will never get the same flavor as you got when the carto was brand new. I ultimately throw them away to save the hassle/disappointment of going through the cleaning process.
Yes, you can't dry burn a coil on any type of carto unless you take it apart and expose the coil. Then in most cases you can't use it again because you can't replace the diaper and filler. So the only one I know of that you can do a dry burn on and use it again is the CE2/clearomizer style because you can take the clear tube off and clean and dry the insides and do a dry burn on the coil because its on top, in a ceramic pot and you can see, and see what you are doing. With regular cartomizer with filler, all you will do if you try to do a dry burn, is burn the diaper and filler because they are touching the coil.I agree with the reasoning of gunk on the coil being the cause of no or reduced flavor and sometimes burnt taste, that black gunk is burnt juice. As an avid dripper for many years. imo the only cleaning that works is dry burn. I dry burn about every two hours. I normally vape a tobacco menthol, the menthol flavor goes first and lets me know it is time to dry burn. When you dry burn you will see the coil stay red for a little while after you turn off the current, this is the gunk burning, after two or three burns that black gunk turns to white ash and blows off easily. Off course all this is easier on an atty than on carts, DC or TC. My experience dry burning clearos has not been good, the coils seem to be pretty delicate and easily break on one side or the other.

Very good information, THANKS. The link was excellent instructions. Is there anyone that has used a standard 510 cartomizer and a G0-G0, that can tell me the differences of the Go-Go and the standard 510 insides?? Could this cleaning and re-stuffing method also work with a 510 carto?? THANKSIt is not a 510 thread. It's specific to the go-go. There are a few adapters available though.
I'm not familiar with the different types of cartomizers, but I can tell you what I see when I clean and dry burn. I use tweezers to pull the filler out. There is a piece of cotton batting wrapped right around the center tube, and surrounding that is the fluffier batting (like fluval, but not sure what it is. Apparently fluval will work to replace it if it gets singed.) So, I pull that out and rinse the cartomizer. Let it dry a bit or shake it out. Put it on the battery and burn till I can see the glow. If I look directly down the center tube I can see a little glowing spiral coil. Then rinse well, replace the two pieces of batting, and dry completely.

And, though it's mentioned on the link, I'll mention it as well... all this info came from ecf member mohawkx. Thanks to him!
Thanks for the reply, good information. I will look into the Go-Go and a adapter. Question: are their any other carto's that have horizontal coils besides CE2's, that have a filler material like the GO-GO ??Go-Go cartos are horizontal coil.
Any carto with a wire up the middle is a vertical coil and cannot be dry burned.
Thanks I appreciate the addition information, and your honest opinion. I have used the Ego mega DC and they do indeed work very well with lots of vapor.Well, I believe that most cartos have the same filler material. Other horizontal coils are mostly 808 threaded such as the VOLT, Bloog, and G6. My favorite would have to be the IKV LR MEGA KR808 carto. It performs great and takes about 2.2 ml of juice or 55+ drops. Also, I wanted to mention to you about the flaws of a horizontal coiled cartomizer. Which is the adhesive that is used to hold the "air tube" in place that the filler is wrapped around. You can check out the burning cartomizer thread about that.
IMO, the Ego Mega Dual Coil Cartos are the best XXXL cartos I've used.
