When you are ready to retire that head, take the center pin out of the bottom of the head and then remove the rubber grommet. Chances are it's burnt when the wire contacts the rubber.
The heating wire runs down to the bottom of the head and gets sandwiched between the rubber and post/pin. The legs of the coil are the hottest part of the wire because it isnt getting direct airflow and doesnt have the juice and wick to shed the heat away. The heat is absorbed by the rubber and surrounding metal. The rubber tends to burn right where the wire is touching it.
