I've used cotton butcher's twine with great success. I had to remove about half the strands to get the proper diameter, and it helps to use a safety pin to compress the wick (after it's been primed) and create a channel between the wick and the spike.

This setup worked quite well for me. Taste is a bit odd at first, but quickly dissipates. Be careful when the tank starts to go dry or you will burn the cotton which is super unpleasant.

I haven't tried the SS wicks yet, but I do like the silica wicks better than cotton. It's good in a pinch, though!

I suppose it depends on what you're using it for. If you have muted flavor in an AGA-T try removing all the screws.

I found I didn't like SS mesh all that much either, yes the flavor is a little muted and the wicking is a bit far for good. My solution is to roll some silica inside SS 500 mesh, advantages:
-wicks amazing compared to just SS
-much more flavor
-gunk won't build up on it as fast as on silica
-unlike with a normal SS mesh wick the darkened used juice won't drip back down into your tank as far as I can tell.
