Alright, so I finally got a decent pic of the Phoenix with my cheesecloth wick after my long delayed trip home from work, and here it is:

photo-1.png

I figured it would be black and charry, but believe it or not, it tastes wonderful and I haven't so much a fiddled with since I wrapped it. I suppose I should change it out before it gets worse, but since I know this is the cinnamon oil actually being burnt and not the cotton itself, I'll keep using it for a few more days and see just how nasty I can make it look :)

Heck, mine looks worse than that after 5 minutes. lol

Actually I was just trying to get a coil big enough to drop a Qtip in on the phoenie. Meh, wasn't working so good. so I gave up. Not being one to waste a drop of juice I was trying to figure out what to do with the saturated qtip, When I spied a E-2 in a 3 mil syringe sitting there. WTH i'll just drop it in on top of the cup and see what happens.

You tell me.

Greetings everyone,

Well after keeping up with this thread and seeing some of the vids on YT about actually rebuilding wicks on the 1st Viva Nova Tank (one that resembles CE2 style) I figured I'd give it a try again as I used to use MAP tanks all the time but got sick of cutting CE2's and having to get it to set perfect in the Delrin end caps so I just went back to Boge cartos and tanks.

I also have recently tried some Genesis attys and while the flavor was amazing, I am not that much a fan of the open draw and even tried it for 2 weeks straight as most things I've read\watched say once you get used to it you can't go back. The other issue I had with the Genesis ones I tried is it would still leak (very little) out of the connector, but the worst thing\issue I had was that after about half a tank my light color all PG Tobacco juice would start to become dark and start tasting bad, so I would have to dump out the remaining juice, rinse, dry burn and refill. I tried just refilling but I guess it was something coming off the mesh as I vaped. I remember the MAP tanks would also make my juice discolor but that was something to do with the vapor and it also wouldn't change the flavor.

Any way, sorry for the background, so I got a Viva and some raw cotton wick from Amazon that was un-primed and lead free (assuming means raw), there was a link somewhere on here as well as a YT video of someone doing a recoil\rebuild of a ViVa so just got that wick. I boiled the entire wick for 20 minutes and gave it 72 hours to dry. I then read a post where someone drilled out the end of the slots with a 3/32 drill bit to allow the wick to not be pinched, so did that. I coiled my cotton wick, fed the wire through the bottom and made sure to separate the positive and negative (didn't use non-resistance wire to make the ends) and tried it out. Ohms was around 1.7 and I got a good amount of vapor and no real dry hits but I still had some faint of some taste\flavor that was just off, not burning but flavor was not just my juice. I tried it for about an hour and figured I would try some regular 3mm silica wick I recently got from AV (I know this thread is all about safe vs. dangerous but just had to see). Anyway, did the same routine and took about 3 drags but this time I got a really really bad taste and even a smell so I figured I better check the rubber insulator (separating positive and negative) and you know what comes next...the wire started to burn it some, so glad I stopped.

Anyway, I figured I'd see if anyone had any feedback regarding the cotton wick, did I maybe not boil it enough, too much, etc.? I didn't wrap the coil THAT tight and when I removed it there were no burn marks as well as when I did this the rubber wire insulator wasn't scorched at all.

I just found the product for the cotton wicking I got and it was the same one in the YT video I watched:

Amazon.com: Cotton Square Braid Candle Wick - #1/0: Arts, Crafts & Sewing

So I guess my next step is to get some Non-Resistance wiring to make the ends so they don't burn that rubber?

I thought about getting a Penelope but still not sure....

Anyway, that's my experience so far...back to cartos :( for now.

Thanks for any and all info\help\feedback, I truly appreesh :)

Like this one, 26Awg Tungsten coil :)

Tungsten?, interesting...working out the math on that must have been fun, I know Tungsten conducts pretty good until it hits about 200C where it's R value can almost double...that's some crazy in-rush current, great for a quick heat up but isn't it a little tough on batts?

I'm gonna smash a light bulb and try that;)

Hey all. Have not read the entire thread (just to page 160 or so) but I wanted to try the recoil/rewick tricks. I had BAD LUCK trying to make a new coil for my Stardust atty. Fat fingers....old eyes...bad lighting. I got it together but it popped on the first draw. What I ended up doing is taking a new atty for the stardust and I took out the wick from the coil and PAINSTAKINGLY threaded some of my No. 4 cotton yarn through the EXISTING coil in the atty (2.4 Ohm supposedly). Been using a variety of NLV juices in it. Started off using the middle setting of my Buzz Pro and would get a few good tasting hits but then burnt hits. Turned the Buzz down to a little more than the lowest setting and I'm getting GOOD chain vape hits. Also had an idea for this rewicking recoil business today. Will have to check out for some supplies tomorrow and will report back here when I get a chance to play with it. The idea....shush, you guys.

Hey Q, you ever hear anything back from Kanthal on purchasing wire directly from them? :?:

I've purchased directly through Kanthal.com but you have to buy a min of about 5lb of wire at a time, which runs approx $250 for a 5lb roll of Kanthal A-1. They wont sell small 100' rolls so dont waste your time, they also just opened a brand new facility in June n the USA :) I have an Acct set up with them but 5lb's of wire is a lot to have to buy, most of the oem wire plants are like this even the ones I buy from in China. Tungsten is the .... Boyz :)

I've been trying re-wicking my CE2 with cheesecloth threads. Not working out too well. The threads don't swell nearly as much as the rolled cotton. I've tried twice, increasing the "thread count" on the second go; with the same result. A wick small enough to thread through the coil isn't swelling up like the rolled cotton to fill the coil when juiced. I'm getting vapor; but the very top of the coil wraps are glowing a bit.
Think I'll stick with rolled cotton for re-wicking and try the cheesecloth and candle wick when I make coils.

Then again, the 'stock Chinese CE2 coils' aren't the most evenly formed things.

Just a thought -

It seems new users are continuing to come to this thread.

It is not unusual for me to see a thread of interest that I hadn't noticed before. Sometimes I look at the number of posts and end up passing it by for the effort required to catch up. I know I've adopted at least one thread because it was restarted.

With over 2000 posts here, there is a lot to wade through. Sometimes threads get restarted. It shouldn't be too difficult for some of our experienced members to cover 'the basics' in several posts in a restarted thread. That might save people going through the enormus startup effort to catch up.

...anybody care to share thoughts on a restart?

Excellent idea, which has been brought up before. Currently the only thing that I've been doing is re-wicking CE2s with rolled cotton; so, not much first-hand experience to pass along.

If those of us who have tried various materials and have found one or more that works best could do a short explanation with results and make a post. If you click on the "Go Advanced" button under the quick reply box, you can add a title to your post.

Then we could possibly combine these posts and see about getting it 'stickied'.

Whatcha think?
