Quigs, temco has some for sale that claims to be 29. I have some but haven't tried it yet (I really like the 30). Link: Kanthal A1 Wire 29 Gauge 25 ft 0 12oz Resistance Resistor AWG A 1 | eBay

You know, as soon as I clicked "post" I seemed to recall seeing 29 awg somewhere and dismissing it as a conversion error between the metric and awg system (the American wire gauge system tends to stick to even numbers, even though the table shows odd numbers, buying the odds is a different story :?:)...it might be worth trying...currently my coils are just below 1 ohm which is just a bit too hot, but one more wrap and pfft...but the 29 (if it actually is) may just be the ticket...good find :D

Can't add any more to this :)...I got one 50' roll of 28 from Temco, I got it in days, finally said screw it and ordered a 250' of 30 and a 250' of 28, (I rarely use 32 and have tons if I change my mind)...I'm with BJ, I wish they made a 29...the ability to hold a coil shape if all you want to do is re-wick, long lifespan...but also heated a little faster like the 30, ah well, I'm just being picky.

I got some 29 frim temco but haven't really used it yet.

I ordered some Friday night...I'm going to be choked if it's the perfect happy medium seeing as I just ordered a wack of 28 and 30. I made an oval out of 30, it came in at 1.3, not as "in your face" as the .9 - 1 ohms I build with the 28's but I could get used to it (and my batts will thank me), the heat-up time on the 30 is noticeably better but then I re-wicked it...you have to be a lot more careful (and that was with a 20 min old wick/clean coil)...I'm really glad I got the 1mm hemp BJ posted so that I can pull out the strands one at a time...I probably spent as much time straightening out the 30 oval in prep. for a new wick than if I just yanked it and made a new one.

I ordered some 29 also. Been using the 30 on all my ovals almost exclusively. On my 2ohm preference for coils, the 28 was just too much and I could take a nap while it was heating up. The 30 is a little more flimsy for the oval, but I am getting 10 days to two weeks on the hemp before I clean them, especially now with the Hangsen tobacco flavors that don't gunk up as much.

That's a good run...I'm mostly getting that out of the bamboo (you're right, depends on the juice of course), but honestly with the ERA's/Igo's, the wick swap is such a non issue I usually swap out the wick and cook the coil about once a week when I start getting that burnt sugar taste or I want to inspect the igo's for brass reaction (nothing yet, must be my juices playing nice)

I've read some of the many many pages here but haven't come across anything answering this question... Is anyone getting a strange taste when they're using cotton? I find that it wicks fine but there's a strange taste that I don't taste when I use any other wicking material. (silica, cartomizers, etc) Doesn't anyone else taste this or is it just me?

That is very common with cotton. If you boil it first that will lessen the earthy taste some but it will still be there for about a ml or so. It varies with different cotton and different people. Nothing to worry about.

Answered my question, thank you! :toast:

Too bad I spent FOREVER reading this thread and others and searching keywords to find this.
Very good info on what can be used as wick - I am going to start with the boiled cotton twine.

I have an idea on something I can use to knock off this idea for a holder Amazon.com: Norpro Stainless-Steel Holder with Cotton Cooking Twine, 220 feet: Kitchen & Dining

In addition to the very good advice about boiling out. Try boiling out in a clean stainless pot 20 minutes, change the water and do it again. Also it could be anything the cotton comes in contact with from the counter and your hands to anything else. If you wear cosmetics and you touch your face then handle the cotton for instance the slightest amount of cosmetic fragrance etc. can get in the cotton. Also hand oils, as gross as the thought may be you could be tasting your own hand oil or whatever lotion.

Cotton is pretty amazing as a wick material but it is highly absorbent and will collect anything.

Hope this helped.

Don't mean to keep sounding like a broken record (plus I get my hemp this weekend so things may change) but one of the big reasons I stick with the Aunt Lydias bamboo is that it has virtually no taste when compared to cotton...but of course that will have a lot to do with your juices...

I agree with you on the taste of the hemp and on the qualities of bamboo specifically Aunt Lydias #10. I have found on my Drunker tank and on some of the attempts at rebuilding CE clearomizer elements that the bamboo wicks too much and does not swell much while doing so. With these qualities it fails to close the 4 wick ports in the Drunker so I must keep the Atty right side up at all times. in the case of the CE clearomizer it wicks so fast that all that rebuild does is gurgle and is way too wet to get a decent vape from. On the Drunker I have begun using a combination of hemp and bamboo in order to seal the ports and still get a good vape. I have not made up my mind what to do on the CE clearo but want to figure it out so I can stop buying as many replacements.

Well, I did boil the cotton (100%) first. It's not a perfumey taste or anything like that... I feel that it's the cotton itself. It's just a very strange taste.
When you say it will have a taste for the first ML or so, are you referring to tanks? Because on this particular device, I'm not using a tank.

Most people refer to that funny taste as "earthy" and yes I was referring to tanks. I don't know how long it will take to go away but it should take long. It keeps getting better the longer you use it. Cotton gives me the best flavor once I get past that earthy taste. :)

You might try different cottons. There are all kinds of sizes ranging from 3mm braided to tiny threads.
