EDIT: Sorry still drowsy, just re read and see you had success with the yarn vs. the ball :) Great work!

Reading the this morning it could have used some editing, too much text for the amount of information it actually conveys, sorry about that.

The yarn is working very well for me so far,

Cyrus, I noticed the original Pheonix coils are pulled way down into the cup, I have been running my coils straight across from hole to hole so I can pull tight, if you are pulling tight it sounds like you are doing the same? I have not noticed any problems with going straight across just wondering why china did that?

another note on the phoenixes, there is epoxy on the ceramic cup where the power leads come in, I have been taking a lighter to the ceramic after I get them apart first they turn black then the stinky epoxy smokes off I keep going until they are completely white again, I don't want this epoxy in my vape. that also lets me pass my positive lead through the now open holes, my ground lead goes through a hole the the side and is pressed between the ceramic cup and metal base

Just a quick blurry pic of the cotton roll (batton) wick in CE2 (aerial view :p). Made wick on Wednesday morning, washed with warm water Wed evening; no cleaning since then. Probably around 4 mL vaped since cleaning. Still vaping down to ~1/4 full or less in the XL clearo before refilling; which I never did with the silica wicks.

Looks perfectly clean no juice burning at all,

Pure speculation ahead:

I think that is part of the reason for good flavor on cotton, I only get juice discoloration if I get crazy with the voltage. I think cotton has fewer hot spots than silica due to its better wicking properties, the coil is unable to dry out the portion of wick in contact with it.

The big difference between dry hits on cotton and silica have me intrigued, I am still a noob but I have noticed the VG dry hits tasted much worse than %100 PG dry hits, an electronic cigarets coil is liquid cooled, as long as there is sufficient liquid available the boiling liquid limits the coils temperature to the boiling temperature of the liquid,

Are these nasty VG dry hits Acrolein? if so is the cooler running cotton protecting us from this toxin?

If I had my other camera I might have gotten a clearer pic. There are some dark spots (pin ..... size) on the wick between the coils. The coils themselves are still looking very clean.

ETA:
Still no coloring of the juice. I've topped off the clearo at least three times since cleaning it.

Can I get pure cotton yarn at my local fabric store? What size? Do I need to boil it?

Thanks

Yes, I got "medium" #4 100 percent white cotton from a local fabric store, I boiled mine for 20 min, as cotton yarn is not specifically intended for such use and we do not know what kind of additives are used in yarn. #4 is a bit big, works very well at high wattage. still working on getting it right for my lowly 3.4v ego batteries.

there were only a few %100 cotton yarns available, most were blends with polyester, rayon, glitter coated etc etc, if you can find organic unbleached un-dyed cotton it would be even better.

Cool I'm heading to the store. Thx

There has been some discussion about this on the forum. In fact, Cyrus Vap recently engaged one of our member chemists in this discussion, here:

As noted in there, one can minimize the risk (edit- 'risk' may be too strong of a word here) of acrolein formation by adding water to the liquid to lower it's boiling point.

Finally got around to a cotton batten wick on one of my cheap lines, tropical summer weather has made me lazy. 2.6 ohms 32 kanthal at 5 volts is vamping better than I expected. Cooler than than SS so a little less throat hit. Still has residual flavor of whatever was on my fingers and we won't get into that. :D

Lol, a little more exotic, a mix of garlic shrimp and girlfriend,,

Sir, I've got to say my initial impression of you as an intuitive, elevated thinking, creative Bonut inventor, has just been tarnished a bit. Just so you are aware in my world thats a good thing and a compliment. Oh yea, is that description a marinade recipe? sounds like it would go good on the grill.

@Tom, are you rebuilding the ce2's or just putting a new cotton wick through?

This was a quick remove-silica-squeeze-cotton-through-coil job :D. I have a couple of CE2s set up as rebuildables and I'll probably move over to those soon (or when the coil on this one pops).
