Made myself a genisis last year and had real trouble with oxidising the SS, then had some family trouble and went back on the analogs. Finally managed to come back to vaping and ECF and found this thread, and it has rekindled my interest!!! Thanks to Evilgrym and all others for your ideas and time!! Okay folks. I decided to give the cotton another go. This time I asked the wife if she had 100% cotton yarn, expecting her to say "what?" Instead she said yup and went and got thisView attachment 109666
She was not sure if it was 100% cotton but looked it up online where she bought it (target) and the front page says cotton, detailed page says polyester.
With that said, the wick is made and I'm vaping it now. I swear I can taste the actual yarn (I did boil this prior to use). How long before the "yarn" taste goes away and the juice flavor becomes full for you folks?

since this is not 100% cotton the taste might never go away - you can't boil out the polyester.

Well I've already started growing an extra toe on my feet.....Maybe I'll sit this one out
Really though, I'm gonna stop in there tomorrow and take a look on the actual package it came in. I just thought someone had a similar situation with theirs.

most cotton yarns are mixed with polyester nowadays to hold the shape better in the finished product. i'm positive that is not what everybody here is using so go easy till you find out!
Oh I knew it was not what everyone was using for sure. I went ahead and filled my bottom coil ce3 style back up and I'm using it. The test was done on a V1 Vivi which was not ready for prime-time anyway. I need to get me the V2/2.5 for any real test anyway. I'll see if I can pick up some 100% cotton at Michaels tomorrow.
I'd definitely get something that says 100% cotton. There are many different types of polyester, but I wouldn't want to vape on a wick made of any of them. I can't even stand using regular cartos with polyester filling, because it taints the juice with it's chemicals.
Cotton balls and cheesecloth are usually pretty easy to find. I'm liking cotton balls, as they can be worked into anything, but they do require some practice to get optimal results.
I generally do a burn test just to help verify the claims on the packaging. Cotton burns yellow-orange with a burning paper/dried leaf smell, and leaves little ash.
Did another hot water wash of my first cotton (roll) wick last night. Noticed a slight build up on the coil.
Removed the first cotton wick, dry burned the coil and re-wicked the CE2 this morning. This time getting an 'off' taste. I had made a few wicks this past Wednesday when I first added a cotton wick. The wick I used this morning was one of those I had made then.
Note to self: next time try a 'fresh made' wick

To anyone interested in re-wicking a CE2 (or other type) 'stock' coil - you need to make the overall wick small enough to fit in the coil; but if you get one end started you can twist the wick on each side of the coil in opposite directions to compress it and work it through the coil easily.

Thanks Tom, just did this last night with a fluxo and working great so far. I do have a little cottony fast but not bad. I picked up some at Michael's and boiled twice for about 5 minutes a time. Probably could have went longer. I peeled the 4 strands apart and just used one strand to pull through. Didn't know if would be enough but seems to be working fine so far. Flavor definitely not as muted as with silica.
Pretty much how I get a wick into a Line...before I twist it though, I hold it next to my coil to check that in it's relaxed state it's just a little fatter than the inside diameter of your coil because it's possible to get something much fatter in there using the twist method and it'll just choke once it relaxes and gets soaked with juice...also, I smear a little PG on my finger tips before I twist it...it tends to hold together till you get it in, kind of pre-primes and the PG gets rid whatever may be on your finger tips (onion, garlic, girlfriend, etc...) and not mixed in with your flavour...

Yeah, I got some of the 2/0 size of that cotton wick. I should bring it in to work and measure it with the micrometer. Yeah, if I remember I'll do that tomorrow.

I have to say, I never even thought about throwing a vid up on photobucket...I learned something today...normally I would go to bed now, cause my dad used to say "learn something new everyday, when you do, relax, you're done"...but I actually learned 2 things today (tomorrow I plan on just calling it in)...I left my Ody on my desk (upright, in it's little stand) for 4 days (I don't take it down to the cottage, just in case the border guards confiscate it...) I left the flow control open on it, normally no big deal, the ceramic would saturate and it would stop on it's own...cotton batton on the other hand, nope, I found it sitting in a pool of 5ml's of juice... apparently it just keeps wicking, dripping off the wick and down through the airway and out the bottom, interesting...in a crappy sort of way...

I've had a cheesecloth wick with a 2.6ohm coil on my V1 for a little over a week, and I haven't had a single issue out of it. It's been working great, but I need to pull it apart and see if there is any charring to the cotton...
