So I guess you would like to see this in a rba huh ?

I got some newer samples with a 1/16" hole up the center of the rod and a couple with a 1/8" hole up the center of the Rod, they perform pristine Cyrus :2cool:

I would love to see it in a Penelope or an Oddy! Have you tried them in these applications? Sounds amazing MWA !!!!

that would be a helluva find BJ :)

mwa brings the goodies, that's why all the ladies call him daddy

update on my Mini Nova Mystery Metal Soup

no sign of green or anything funky in the slots after ~ 20 mls and loads of abuse. The cotton wicks were dark but washed out for the most part, still some residual superficial crap but nothing smells or tastes burnt (yeah I totally gave it a lick LOL)

too lazy to rebuild as I'll be home Saturday with all of my toys, a new Reo VV and some 500 mesh, I want to get dirty boys

BJ as I recall you modded the hell out of your Vivi Tank, I take it you're not concerned about the mystery metal reactivity and what not?

NY GIANTS FTW

Hi there, here's my 2 cts.
All the available wicks are made of fibreglass. Even Silica wicks [94% SiO2 (Silica) and 2% Al203 (Aluminium Oxide)] are Fibreglass wicks. But the fibreglass is not a problem, as long as the fibre yarns have a bigger diameter than 3 micron. The problem of fibreglass relates to wicks which are made of yarns with a smaller diameter and hence, are considered as carcinogenic.
Ask your seller if in doubt.

Another option: Nextel wicks, which are Ceramic (Alumina-Borica-Silica).
Cheers,

Appreciate the effort you put into your research Manete (welcome btw :))...but there's more than just safety that we're thinking about here...it's also about taste...

I've been down the road of Nextel Ceramic, and while the flavour is good, I've easily surpassed that with some of the mats the good folks have tried in this thread...read on and enjoy.

Welcome Manete

The 3 micron (or 5, pick your textbook) is an educated guess on the part of the medical world. It may be ilberal, it may be conservative. Its a reasonable deduction based on the size of particles than can penetrate the deeper airways.

That said, just because something starts out with strands larger than the size in question doesn't mean it ends up that way. Things break, stress, snap, etc. Speculating here. Bottom line is we don't know. How much would it take to cause an issue? Again, we don't know. Some people don't want to take the risk and find out. Some people just don't like the taste.

And what quigsworth said :)

Completely retro-topic, but in the spirit of this thread, I've been playing with the cotton/bamboo wicks (all of them!) on my Chalice for about three weeks now, and SO FAR, my favorite (out of cotton yarn, cotton crochet thread, cotton embroidery thread, bamboo yarn, organic cotton yarn, bamboo thread--two sizes, and candle wick) is the #10 bamboo thread. Great taste, seems to last a long time, easy to wrap (8 strands) and just an all-around win.

I know we've moved on to a lot of chat about ceramic and all kinds of stuff, but I've been wrapping new coils for the Chalice for a few weeks now and just wanted to report in. I know my findings are subjective, but thought they might be helpful to someone reading this huge thread.

EDIT: Changed my post. Bad info....I meant #10 bamboo thread. It's Aunt Lydia's brand and I get it at Michaels. (I accidentally said the #3...which is a lot thicker. I only use 4 strands of the #3 thread. The #10 size is my favorite.) Sorry.

Where did you get this bamboo thread? Did you try it with 100% VG or a high VG juice?

I've been using just plain old white cheesecloth on my Chalice. I like it, but I'm game to try something new. THe only thing that bothers me about the cheesecloth in this setup is that I need to change it about every ~5 mls. After that it gets real gunky and starts to taste off. I would love to get a little more life outta the wick. Would you mind posting a link to the bamboo you're using?

It's Aunt Lydia's and I got it at Michaels (locally) I use it with almost 100% VG....the only PG I have in it is in the nic that I buy, but it's minimal since I get 100mg nic and then dilute it with VG. Works great. I have to squonk about every 3 hits or so, but that's really no problem at all. I'm vaping on a VV Grand.

Here's some....but I got mine at Michaels locally. I saw they also had it at Hobby Lobby if you have either of those stores around you.

Here's another one. Just Google Aunt Lydia's #10 bamboo thread and you'll find gobs of it. I get the natural or the white.

Better yet: If you PM me, I can send you some......I have a 20 year's supply.... :)

Sounds good. I only vape VG and so far cotton has been working pretty good as far as wicking goes but the flavor could be better. I'm using it on a Penelope. I'm a Woodvil lover myself but haven't found an affordable BF RBA except the ERA which sucked.

You mentioned #3 Bamboo. What does the #3 mean? I don't see that in the link you provided. It says size 10.

I went back and changed my original post to say #10. (Check the edit....I explained.) I have both #3 and #10, but got confused when I posted. The #3 is bigger than the #10. The #10 is the one I like best. I got them both at Michaels and Hobby Lobby has them both. I like the smaller threads (the #10), and I wrap my coil using 8 strands. I haven't been boiling it, but I may boil a little and see if there's much of a difference. With the unboiled, I get an "earthy" taste for about three hits (that I just don't inhale) then the taste is gone. From then on I just taste the juice.

I find boiling a bit tedious and have been trying these without boiling them. If they are good, I just forego the boiling. The boiling isn't that big of a PITA, but then drying and untangling....ugh. I just pull it straight off the spool and use it. So far I really like it....and it's really easy to use. I really would be glad to send you some....and some of anything/all of the rest I've accumulated. I've got a roll of just about everything (including both sizes of the cheesecloth) mentioned on this thread. Have tried them all and this #10 bamboo comes out on top...for now, anyway. :)

EDIT: My offer is for anyone who wants some. TM, hildicat....anyone else. :)
