Alright y'all!

Just rewicked my ce4 with 100% organic cotton (too lazy to find bamboo lol) and it seems to be working better than before!! I think I managed to use just the right amount because it doesn't seem to be pinching or flooding. And I kinda went for a walk on the wild side and re-coiled the thing without an ohmmeter. But I was pretty darn careful about the coiling, and the way it is performing I don't think I have a short. Now the drawback is of course that I have no idea what voltage to use it at, so I am just going with the lowest one on my ego twist. To be honest, I am pretty proud of my success. This is my first time rewicking anything, and the ce4 is pretty tricky to take apart.

Oh and here's the wick I removed:

It needed to come out, was tasting hella burnt.

And you should be proud!...good for you zeph...you know of course that you just walked through the first of the seven doors of hell when it comes to your up-coming insatiable need for newest, bigger, better, faster, shinier rba's right?

btw, spend the $10 and get yourself a meter...it may save a PV or your face one day...plus they're just cool to have :)

yeah i'm going to buy a meter. I just had a nasty burnt wick and sorta went for it. I can still test the ohms later once i pick up my meter. might get me one tomorrow actually. Kinda curious what range we are looking at, because I think I put more wraps in the wire than were there originally. and because i am just 2 cool 4 skool i forgot to even count wraps. durrr hahaha

Matching factory coils by counting may cause you more grief than good, you need to think about your kanthal/nichrome gauge, the thickness of the cotton you're using vs. the silica factory wick, bla, bla, bla...there's going to be a bit of trial/error but eventually you'll just start to get more and more comfortable and just by looking at your wick/coil you'll be able to just say,...that looks like about 1.8 ohms...it'll come! but when I say get a meter it's because sometimes when you're rebuilding these things, you screw up, you get a dead short, you put it on your PT and...time for a new Twist :(...I've rebuilt my Ody a thousand times and meter it every time before I put power to it, you just never know...

Boiled my Aunt Lydia's bamboo today. Definitely much better than raw. Much cleaner taste right from the start.

Not gonna lie to ya Hildi ...but ya, virtually no break-in time on the boiled and I just find it wicks just that much better...kinda loosens it up a bit imo...

Nice going. Do you have a multimeter to check to ohms? If not, I would just keep turning up the voltage until the flavor is right on or if you go to far you'll get a burnt taste so then just back off a little.

Edit: Oops, too late.

A teaching/display size rolled cotton wick and coil - or maybe something to build my next mod around

IMG_0290.jpg

Great visual aid but it got me thinking...has anyone thought of actually up-scaling a PV?, nothing stupid and certainly not something you'd pack around, more like a Hookah type design...something with a 1/4" wick, a healthy wrap of maybe even 28 awg kanthal (or thicker), a regulated PSU that could bang out 4-5 amps no sweat...I'm not talking about making something that would be over the top un-vapable but something you have at home, that because of no size constraints and larger surface areas, would last quite a while???

Was sitting here looking at my "display wick/coil", remembered Q posting the above and it got me thinking

So went over to my PV Web Apps page and came up with this

A coil/wick using 26g Kanthal A-1 with a diameter of 15mm and 20 wraps is ~11 ohms. Now hook that up to a 12V power supply and you're running at a respectable 13 watts. Of course you'll need around a meter of 26g A-1 to wrap that coil.

I've been converted to Aunt Lydias for a week now. Blows everything else away that I've tried. Would love to see how people are wrapping coils with 8-10 strands of it. I have to tape one end of the strands to a needle so that I can wrap my coils w/out the strands turning over on themselves. So good!!

I like it too but, it is bamboo viscose. I looked that up and viscose is rayon. It's a material made from cellulose. So, Aunt Lydia's is made from cellulose extracted from bamboo. So calling it bamboo is sort of like calling our nic juice tobacco. That's no reason to stop using it. I'm going to keep using it.

The Griffin - Rebuildable Atomizer Tank

kind of scary stuff

There are 'moral' considerations, and people flame each other left and right about such things elsewhere. I'm just thinking in terms of consequences here. Well, mostly.

Yes there are many things that make an atty great, subtleties of air flow, etc, then there is build quality, over all feel, looks, etc.

I don't have any cheap clones of the expensive RBAs, so I can't speak to how well they work in comparison.

But what happens when someone nails all the intricacies of atty building that make the expensive gear great, and sells their unit made of cheaper materials for jack all?

Will the vendors/makers of high end gear have to cut prices to keep above water? Will loyal fans persist in paying top dollar despite lack of any functional difference between high end gear and 'clones?'

It also raises the question, in my mind, was the high end gear ever reasonably priced to begin with? Did I/we get fleeced?

Are the cloners the bad guys, or just the vehicle of justice being visited on the rip off artists?

Ooo the controversy burns....

I got three of those griffin's in a coop for $29. They not the greatest things ever made but, I'm not going to complain for the money. They work well. As far as being a rip off copy, there's no genesis atty that you can buy that isn't. So, I have no moral qualms.

Apparently any "bamboo" yarn have sentetics in it. After reading this I stopped using any bamboo. And I found really good soft wicking material in the same Michael's craft store: "Martha Steward" 65%cotton/35%hemp yarn. Thickness just like a standard silica. After a 3 weeks of use I'll tell you - better than anything I've tried. And I tried a lot: 100% cotton, bamboo, candle wick, ceramic rope. Even used my Ody with mesh wick which was not bad at all. But came back to Martha Steward. Love the old lady!.. LOL

I'm not saying you didn't read that but, I don't think there's any such word as sentetics. If you hit advanced search in google and search for bamboo sentetics and exclude synthetics in the exclude words portion, you can find it but, in every case I read, it was a typo that should have read synthetics.

I found sentetic oil, rattan, etc. Lots of sentetic stuff but, it was all someone meaning synthetic as near as I could tell.

Oh - I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought 'sentetic' was some kind of nasty component of bamboo yarn and not a typo for 'synthetic'. There's so much I don't know, I just thought this was another of the 'unknown to me' buzz words.

What makes you a PV master is figuring out how to get "w-a-nking" past the naughty word filter...impressive as always Cy
