I almost gave up on bamboo, me with my mostest is bestest, I put 8 strands in my first and wrap my coil snug. My first 3 days I kept thinking, how can Quig say this is good. Finally I started pulling out threads and when I got down to 4 it started getting great.

Yep, 4's my magic number too.

tried all the different materials here. bamboo, hemp, yarn, etc. have been hooked on cotton yarn for a month and a half. very happy with it. was bored yesterday and watched an old vid i had. in the later part of the vid he talks about using cotton makeup pads for wicks. well, i was going to walmart anyway, so i got some. took a nova head and drilled the bottom part of the slot to 3/32. wrapped a 28ga coil on the 3/32 bit, 5 wraps. made the wick like in the video. WOW...finally got my huge, thick heavy vapor , that i have been looking for. i use 100 percent vg with 18 mg nic. am also tasting a flavor i never had before. must be the nic. i dunno. not bad though. just different than i am used to. gonna open the bottom of the head nipple hole to increase air flow to see if it gets better. just hate to take this head apart, it is working so good. i guess i am never satisfied.

EDIT..bj, the next time you do a speed test, would you include this wick...just curious. if you wish, pm me your mailing address and i will send you some...hell i have 80 of them in a pack, probably a 10 yr supply, lol.

Just wanted to know about the wicking materials everyone is using....I read earlier in thread about worries of ss mesh and acrolein so what I'm asking is what is the best alternative anyone as come up with for the genesis besides stainless and where can I get some.....I use 40/60vg juice most the time and always have used ss never have I had the build u shown in begining of thread on mesh but have had some mouth and breathing issues since switched from dcttanks to genesis stye devices and mesh wicks....not sure if they are connected but if I could find something that works simalar or better than mesh in these I would like to compare....so pease if anyone could show me link for what I suggest ad how to make the setup would be much appreciated......

Vivi nova 6wrap 28g A1 oval coil. I have 3 iv novas setup this way and they are awesome producers. Now to see how long the legs last without burning the grommet. If the wraps around the legs don't burn, it should be a cinch to replace the other threads without having to disassemble.

Damn BJ...2 round toothpicks have now been added to my vape kit...an oval 1.8 30 (flat face facing the airhole) with 8 threads of Lydia's through it in my BF ERA...at 4v I'm almost choking on the vapor...brilliant

I didn't have high hopes for it but I tried something else new today. I had to get some gas today and saw unflavored, natural blount wrappers. Thought...why not? First drag using sweet carolina tobacco flavor had a nice cigar flavor. After that terrible. The blount wrapper doesn't wick worth a crap.

On a positive note I got my bamboo yarn sample from quigs today (thanks man). Fantastic so far! Gonna have to try the BJ coil next.

I'll throw my latest coil out there for y'all to try. I made a dual coil Penelope. I took two strands of 34 gauge Kanthal and kept them parallel and close together as I made a coil around my "winding nail". I twisted one end to a NR wire, the other I just let ground out on the ceramic holder. I never put a NR on the "steel" side, only on the "ceramic side". The result is 4x2 wraps at 1.7 ohms, through which I pulled 8 strands of Aunt Lydia, and laid 3 strand on top of. At 4.2 volts it made me sweat from nicotine. Great vapor, flavor is yet to be determined because it was a new DIY batch, so I haven't got anything to compare it to yet. It tasted good, but not a lot of flavor, but I need to vape it on a couple other atties to make sure it's not the juice's fault, it may just need a day or two to steep.

Gonna try this on a Genesis next!

Thanks Quig, I have redone all my Vivi Novas this way and even ordered 4 more. Have not had a grommet burn yet with the thread wrapped around the legs. I had to change the Lydia's in one and just threaded 8 new threads thru without taking it apart. I could see that the thread wrapped around the legs was still there.

Hey Schneck

Don't worry about acrolein, based on what wiser men than I have taught me its not going to be an issue for us, our gears lacks sufficient heat and the reaction kinetics to make it a possibility (especially at 40/60, you're not even in the same city as acrolein :) )

I get that searing burning thing in my chest from SS mesh when i've been battling shorts, when the mesh is right, no problems.

I'd reccomend running over to Michael's and getting some Aunt Lydias Bamboo Viscose crochet thread, white, #10

I bet if you steep them in VG or booze for a while they'd do some good work for you!

No NR wire on the ceramic side to the positive post? How can that work? I like the idea of only having to use NR on one end but I don't understand how this can work. Can you explain?

I think that if I'm going to get into the "just pull new wick through the coil" game I need to finally break down and get some 28...I've never had much luck threading existing coils without mangling them but this ERA is almost designed for it, I build it while still screwed to the mod, it's an open platform...nice.

I get it BJ, necessity is usually the mother of invention and the fact you where just trying to find a way to get more coil/wick surface area to interact with air flow all within the relatively tight confines of the Vivi head...but the stand-up oval coil is inspired...now to figure out how to implement it in my Ody...it doesn't lend well to the wick "pull through" by the nature of the NR/R/NR design but I think the 28 may add just enough rigidity to pull it off or, I may go one step further and make a coil wrapping jig out of 2 pins (which I typically use anyway to allow for swell) but fix the pins to a 1mm spacer , jam the Lydia's in the gap between the pins and wrap...go as flat/tall as possible...peeps, you need to try this if your device can take this coil shape, again, well done!

No NR on the ceramic "holder" side or he just lays it in the metal wick slot...the only noteworthy design change of the V2 Ody/Penny over the original Ody where both slots are ceramic.

So we don't need to use the pos post at all? For some reason that just doesn't make sense. But then I'm not an electrical guru.

Quigs, I'd love to see a pic of your ERA setup. I'm getting good results with all sorts of coil/wick combos, LR, SR, cotton, bamboo and silica, but nothing seems to last more than two days before the taste goes south.

So I take it you're building an oval coil and stuffing it with 8 strands of #10 bamboo, right? Can you get a week or more of run time on this? Also, I only have 32 Kanthal at the moment. With this work for the oval coil or do I need to get some 30 or 28 for that to work?

Thanks again

The only thing I've ever got my Lydia's to last more than 4-5 days in is my Ody and Vivi, don't know why that is, just is...but I'm glad because rebuilding an Ody is a process...where as re-threading an ERA (and I've got a 30 oval coil in there) is something you could do in line at a McDonald's drive-though...the 30 isn't bad as far as holding it's shape on a re-thread but 28 could only be better but 32 is too fine and the coil just gets gimped (I tried), I'll post some pics when I'm back in civilization tonight, (my phone refuses to talk to my tab atm)...one thing I did discover...lay a piece of scrap "pull string" kanthal lengthwise on an 18xxx batt, then wrap your Lydia's 8x around the batt/kanthal scrap and snip, grab both free ends of the scrap kanthal and twist them together (capturing the coil of Lydia's) then slide the whole thing off the batt...thread through the coil then use the same scrap kanthal pull string to tie the loop ends together on the back side of the posts, the 18xxx batt thickness makes about a perfect sized Lydia coil, serious and just sayin', who cares if it's only good for 2 days, it's 45 sec. out of your life to re-thread and squonk to saturate, lol...these ERA's truly rock

Glad to hear I'm not the only one that's not getting a long life span with these. Looks like I might me ordering some 28 soon...

It never ends!
