My ss sheets are only 8 in, I will see i I can find the 8 in wicks from when I did the ss race and put one up against organic. I stated in an earlier post the maid threw away my little kerosine lamp bottles but I saw an six pack of little jam bottles at the super I will get and make some new ones. Will do the burn test with 100% VG. SS versus organic. I will leave the taste tests to Quig.:toast:

Thanks Beege,

You're a Trooper. I anxiously await your results.

ADDED...
Did you do a one-foot length test in your original SS testing? I don't remember that. But you're going for the 8-inch thing. Good for you!!!

<<sigh>>...I've installed 3 rolled cotton wicks in my Line since last night...the first 2 where terrible vape production wise...the 3rd which I did just an hour ago is incredible...seems my consistency is getting worse  (whoever said cotton is easier than mesh )...point I'm trying to make is, if you make a wick from rolled cotton (or a cotton ball) and it sucks, don't write it off as "it doesn't work"...on the one I'm vaping now I made what I thought was a stupid loose wick as far as density goes (don't know why I try and pack as much cotton as I can into the wick hole )...seems the deal is (so far) when using rolled or balls make your wick then twist it as tight as you can...at it's tightest it should be about 2/3 the size of the wick hole you are putting it in...(I reserve the right to discount my aforementioned size/density method as complete crap at any time, but it worked this time...)

Quigs, Gummy, BJ, and everyone else (Modumust Fever kicking in. OMG!!!),

Before I found this Cotton thing you guys are working on, I had been watching a lot of YouTube Videos about Tank Rebuilds. One guy was getting shorts in his SS Mesh Wicks, so he started wrapping them with a single Cheese Cloth Thread. He wrapped it rather tightly, and very, very close together (as close as possible), but only around the upper section where the Coil would be. He said that it worked beautifully at preventing the shorts, and was much more reliable than the Cigarette Paper trick. If it did burn off, that wasn't a problem because it had created a better protection layer on the SS Wick than the Cigarette Paper trick, but I think he had said that it usually did not burn away.

So, with that in mind, I'd like to suggest something similar. I'd do it myself and report on it, but I'm presently without my eVic (it had to be returned for replacement - sob). The thought would be to wrap your Cotton Wick (or whatever the choice of natural fiber material may be) with a single Cheese Cloth Thread, in a similar fashion, underneath the Coil. I believe that this would accomplish two things. 1.) You could set and maintain the diameter of the Wick within the Coil, keeping it from expanding too much, and 2.) It should make it easier to wrap a Coil around it (as opposed to twisting it through) [keep reading - I know some of you like being able to do twist it through]. It shouldn't burn away because the Cotton Wick will keep it plenty wet. It might even help against Gunk Build-Up. You could also extend the length of said wrap to the outside of Atomizer Chamber, eliminating the Choking problems from over-expansion that have been mentioned (in the Line and V2, I think).

And, in the same fashion as using SS Mesh around a Cotton Wick "outside" of the Coil, if your Cotton Wick was loosely wrapped with a Cheese Cloth Thread throughout the entire length, you could control the expansion to whatever degree you desired, and keep it from "blowing up" too much inside your Tank. These "Thread Wraps" would be loose enough to let the Cotton expand some, yet not done too close together, at about ⅛ to ¼ inch (3 to 6mm) separation in a criss-crossed pattern; one time up and then back down, and loosely tied off at the end you started from. If you want to maintain your ability to work a Wick though an already established Coil, then this "entire length" wrap might help with that, too, giving something to "pull" on, while still maintaining its shape without stretching it too much. If you were to use both techniques on a wick, I'm thinking that doing the tighter Coil wrap on top of the length wrap might be best. This length wrap might be especially effective on the Cheese Cloth Wick issues I've read about.

Of course, this would make for a whole new Trial and Error phase, but I think it may have its merits, and make a wick last a whole lot longer, while eliminating some existing problems, but give a "control" and "repeatability" factor that I haven't seen yet.

I can just hear you now... Dang it man, I'm not a Tailor!!!

I'm only up to page 295 on my reading (this is a response to thread #1355 of over 4300 now), so I hope this hasn't been suggested or tried yet. Sorry if someone beat me to it.

Wow, this must have been a whole 10¢ worth, but I know you'd rather owe it to me than cheat me out of it, so it's all good.

Please let me know what you think,

The ebay seller that I get the 1mm hemp twine just emailed that he now has it in 2mm. I ordered some.

Dear BJ43,

We added 2mm natural onto our Hemp twin cord listing. Let us know what you guys think of it. It is twice the size as the hemp twine. It is located in the drop down list that you get your 1mm. You will see it say 2mm Natural in the drop down list. Hemp Twine Cord 1mm 20 Test 5 10 or 25 Yards Color Selectable | eBay Here. :)

Quigs,

I saw that Video again, and brother, it was YOU!!! That's the 2nd time I've quoted you guys with your own material.

Did you ever try something like this on your Batten?

I also just saw your Line/Wick Video (sorry I'm so late to the party!), so I can see how much of a PITA it might be to do this "Length Wrap" thing I had in mind. Guess your Needle pushing feed technique is working well for you. I'll have to try this other thing for myself. Better suited for a Tank like the Vivi Nova, where you could pull it though a pre-established coil.

Presumably they use silica for the high melting point, to avoid toxic oxidation from combustion etc... What is organic, non-harmful and has a high melting point for a substitute?

And do all commerical cartos/clearos use silica?

Is there any evidence we are actually inhaling silica?

If so, what about a filter?

The OP offers evidence of silica in vapor in his first post. A filter is a possibility. Some have suggested cigarette filter use in one's tip.

OK, I know it is just another cart now. A7 with 28g oval coil, this is my original oval coil several months old and now rewicked with 1mm hemp. Two threads thru then on each side, the ends down to the bottom to soak up any juice and the loop up into a cotton wrap around a ptfe air tube. Gives me a good hour of vapor between refills.

I've looked high and low for Teflon tubing without much luck...it's perfect for messing about like that, though silicon tubing from a Reo bottle should also work, silicon can take a .... load of heat...nice BJ, I'm pretty much convinced that there's nothing an A7 can't do ;)...

An Hour

I love my A7's and I also have my lovepedal hemp now.... What did you get the tube from?? And how do you keep the coil from burning it?

<scratching head>

The teflon tube is 1/4 inch above the coil. Teflon fumes commence at 500 deg. F so I don't consider it a problem. I bought an assortment of 5 ft lengths on ebay. Sure wish someone would do a co-op again for the A7, I would go for half a dozen more.

The A7 works very well as a poor man's Spheriod...I used some poly I had, from when I used to have a spheroid, and a mesh tube, my 170 stuff, nice and rigid (and about all it's good for ;))...plus with the single layer mesh tube, filling it is a piece of cake, just kinda do a tip and roll as you drip juice in.

When I built it I used a central oval, my typical 20 strands of Lydia's then covered the wick tails with some loose poly in the wells (can't do a doughnut because of the stupid huge posts). The poly stuck up to the top of the screws...then I made a single layer mesh tube and made it long enough so that it just slipped inside the DT hole when you put the DT on (or about 1/2 long). I wrapped some poly around that and stuffed it in the top cap. When you screw it together the poly in the top cap meshed with the poly in the lower wells, fed the Lydia's and bob's you uncle, a Spheroid...that you don't have to take apart to fill...the only issue I had with it (which would be cured if I bothered to use baton) was that the poly in the wells tended to get twisted in by the top poly and scoonched in to close to the coil...had to mess with it a bit but it worked...at the end of the day, I was really just messing about, I prefer to bf a side holed A7 but if you're bored one day...

This is a good seller and if he doesn't have it listed, ask him. One of the few that sell 5 ft lengths.

I am sure this has been covered but I didn't find it with a quick search. I was wondering what the best place is for buying cotton yarn from (quality & price). It seems like cotton yarn is the current king of the hill as an alternative to silica for taste/wicking (excluding SS&ceramic) if my general sense-dar is accurate?

BJ43, thanks for all the work you are doing to help us find a safe and effective wick!

Beege,

IDK what kind of price you could get on an A7 from a co-op, but MVS has them for $19.00. Offer expires today, Jan 30, 2013!!! Regularly $24.95.

Does anybody know what is used as wicks in normal attys? (306s/bridged attys) and if it's safe?

Hey, a fellow Canadian!...Back in my atty days (ya, I'm such a vet :p) as a dye'd in the wool bf'er I've de-bridged and de-wicked a fair amount of atty's, 306's (and io6's, about the same thing) some Cannon's and typical 510's (just give me the coil)...most of what I saw was compressed steel wool with some silica wick feeding the underside of the coil, or silica actually used as the coil core...is that amount of silica worth the angst if you decide to not de-wick?, debatable...especially if you don't de-bridge...the bridge could almost act as a filter for any airborne silica frags coming off...I'd say the biggest silica impact would be off devices that rely primarily on wrapping Kanthal around silica wick and having at it...having said that, use up your atty's then get a RBA device...the performance of any of the devices/builds the folks on here have been using will kick the crap out of any pre-made disposable atty...and you don't have to spend a bunch of money either...luck and welcome!
