Hey, a fellow Canadian!...Back in my atty days (ya, I'm such a vet :p) as a dye'd in the wool bf'er I've de-bridged and de-wicked a fair amount of atty's, 306's (and io6's, about the same thing) some Cannon's and typical 510's (just give me the coil)...most of what I saw was compressed steel wool with some silica wick feeding the underside of the coil, or silica actually used as the coil core...is that amount of silica worth the angst if you decide to not de-wick?, debatable...especially if you don't de-bridge...the bridge could almost act as a filter for any airborne silica frags coming off...I'd say the biggest silica impact would be off devices that rely primarily on wrapping Kanthal around silica wick and having at it...having said that, use up your atty's then get a rba device...the performance of any of the devices/builds the folks on here have been using will kick the crap out of any pre-made disposable atty...and you don't have to spend a bunch of money either...luck and welcome!

I have a few rebuildables, I was just wondering as I kind of want to get the 306 dripper with my caravela

I get wanting to try new things, cisco 306's are pretty damn good (Ikenvape io6's are even better, like a 306 but a bit bigger)...as far as atty's go, there may be some blow back from others on here but I wouldn't worry too much about silica shards from them...just my opinion but...like I said, CE2 cup type devices on silica, worry, Chalice or ERA open type devices, definitely worry, but atty's?...I wouldn't worry too much.

wick and wire is here. going to boil the hemp here in a bit and rebuild one of the older heads for my Vivi Nova. seems i prefer around 2.4ohms so with 2 strands of 1mm wick how may wraps of 32 gauge wire should i use? im thinking or starting with 5 wraps, does that sound about right? i will hit it with my meter first but want to be close and figured you veteran wrappers would know.

May I suggest that you make your 5 wraps, and measure with your meter at about the same length as the distance of the old Coil's leads are cut (before cutting it), so you can tell if you want more or less wraps.

Don't forget to short your meter leads together first, to see how many Ωs is registered as a Short, and then subtract that from your Coil reading.

If your meter is digital then touching your leads will "zero" it...no math required...one thing I'd like to know though is what ascii code are you using to get the ohms symbol on here?

Dang it Quigs, you made me look it up! :p

In Word 2003, it appears to be Symbols, WP MathA, Character code: 2126, from Unicode (hex). Or, you could just copy it from my Signature, like I did in this case.

i figured that was the correct way but wanted to make sure. just wasnt sure about the wraps since its suck small wire i didnt know if i should be looking at 5 or 6 wraps. got the wick boiled and dried and now just have to take the head apart.

for those of you that want faster drying times for your hemp wick, i halved a paper towel put the wick in it then folded it over again and pressed it out. then got a clean dry paper towel and did the same but this time i put it in the microwave for 45 seconds, checked it and did another 45 seconds and it was bone dry after the second round. for boiling, i just loosely wrapped the hemp around a slotted spoon and fill the pot till the water was about 1/2-1 inch above the wick and put the boil to it. the wick had nothing in it(no film on the top of the water) and boiled nice and clean. i will report back later on how everything goes.

Here's one regarding the ohm symbol using a trick from oh so long ago (think I learned this about 22 years ago).

Hold the alt key down, then type 234 on the number key pad, then let go of the alt key. Ascii code 234 should result in the Ω symbol on any editor that respects the original ascii chart. If you get something different (at least I know it works on ECF), it is probably due to a different character set being used.

ok, time for a serious question. i purchased the 1mm wick suggested by BJ43. i just removed the wick from the 1.8Ω head and slid the new wick material in and it looks to me that a single strand of the 1mm wick fills the slot just fine. with it doubled over it protrudes above the shelf that the cap sits on so i would have to cut it. would a single strand of the 1mm wick work just fine or do i need the added width to get to the correct Ω's with my wire wraps?

If I remember right, we're talking about the Vivi Nova. Mine came with 4 strands of what looks like 1mm Silica Wick, which worked OK for 100% VG until about ½ Tank. But the point is, if you use 3-4 strands of that Hemp, you'd get a Fatter Coil, increasing your Ωs upward to 2.4, and delivering more Juice to the Coil. And don't wrap it too tightly. You can use a Needle or a Paper Clip to wrap the Coil around, and then remove it.

Some people cut a notch in that Silicone Atty Cover, to be able to use a Fatter Wick, and even go so far as cutting the Slot in the Atty Head wider to accommodate same. In this case, a 5/64" (2mm) drill bit would do nicely.

Just a suggestion.

i have both the standard Vivi Nova and the mini but the heads are all the same. the 1.8Ω as well as the 2.4Ω heads have 4 wicks which are much smaller than the 1mm wick i have. i would say they are .5mm or even smaller. the 2.8Ω head has a single wick which looks to be 1.5mm maybe 2mm if it was fluffed up a little. i have 100yds of 32 gauge wire so i may try and wrap just a single 1mm wick and see what Ω rating i get out of it. if it is to low i will have to try 2 wicks and cut the cap.

JazzyTech already has that Wick and is using it. Since he hasn't chimed in, maybe you could send him a PM with your question.

Hey it works. I've wondered how people were getting that symbol. Thanks for the tip. :)
