Just got my first Penelope a couple days ago and I absolutely love it. I've got a wick question, though.

I've seen a couple posts about XC-116 Nextel wick, including Mr. Krinkle's setup method. Is this material safer and/or better performing than the standard 3mm silica wick?

Are there any advantages to using it over the regular old silica wick material?

Taste is completely subjective but most people (myself included) feel the Nextel has better flavor. However Nextel requires at least torching. Also Nextel hasn't been tested for use with e-cigs and there are conflicting opinions as to if it is safe or not. Having read the spec sheets I feel it is safe enough and use it in my ody while my Penelope is usually set up with the stock wick. Although some people have reported a cough while using the nextel wick.

Silicon is a trace mineral (silica). Products containing silica (silica). Sources of silicon
Silicic acid is present in many of our bodies. Most of it is contained in the young tissue and epidermis. In the blood, the amount of silica is very low. However, when the content is reduced, we begin to "feel old age", in response to changing weather worsens our mental state, mood, hair become thin and brittle, and can begin balding, skin loses its elasticity, the nails are broken, there are often bruising, inflammation, sores, cold sores, dandruff, athlete's foot, make themselves known chronic wounds.
There are cases when acne, which had been unsuccessfully treated in various ways for 10 years, resolving within a few weeks after ingestion of silica.
Some dental practitioners managed by silica in a few days to heal ulcerative gingivitis.
Silica is a component of connective tissue, which is important for the extension of health, youth and vitality. Well the silicon and the capillaries, reducing their permeability and preventing the emergence of fragility (as evidenced by the so-called bruises).
With age, the silicon content in the body decreases. Brittle bones in old age due to lack of not only calcium, but also silica. Silicon promotes growth - it helps to "build" bone regardless of vitamin D. Therefore, it is essential to children, the elderly, and adults - healthy and sick, as has a beneficial effect on the heart, the teeth, bones, hair and nails.
Studies have shown that laboratory animals that were given 50 mg of silicon per 100 g of food, grew significantly faster than those who did not receive this trace element. But synthetic drugs silicon effectiveness does not pale in comparison with silica, located in the plant.
Lens contains 25 times more silica than the eye muscle, so homeopaths believe that one type of cataract can be treated with silica. In earlier times it was used as a cure for asthma, colds.
Dystrophy, epilepsy, rheumatism, obesity, atherosclerosis - this is a list of diseases that can now be successfully treated in the diet increased the number of plants that are rich in silica. In contrast to the iron and calcium silica easily digested, even in old age.
How silica we need? Unfortunately, until now the question is not an authoritative answer, because all of the tests carried out in a glass, which contains in its composition of silicon. Apparently, the need for analysis of special plastic utensils.
