I agree with all the posters that answer "no". Thats what my medical chart says too - former. I thought sbout telling my physician I vape but nah! Dont want to get into a huge argument with her and then be labeled.

@ad356 if this is affecting her employment can she inform them she quit smoking shortly after the physical?

Abosoluley ridiculous is all I can say.

A year ago I was working in a aerosol factory and because of the environment we worked in all employees had to take a phisical which included a lung function test. At the time of my test I had been a ex smoker and vaper for just over 2 years. This is after smoking roll your owns for 16 years.
I was 31 at the time I had the phisical and was amazed when they told me I had the lung function of a 22 year old especially after all the trouble I used to have with chest infections and breathing when I was a smoker.
I would say that I'm pretty much living proof that vaping improves the health of people that choose to quit smoking and take up vaping.

If the question is "Are you a smoker?" the answer should clearly be no. If it's "have you ever been a smoker?" then if you have the answer should be the truth. But I'm going to put a third option out there should you answer yes/no if you have never smoked but have vaped? I would say definitely no. Smoking and vaping are not the same thing.

sooo... If one is to dip or chew ... would that make them a moderate smoker too??

I've filled out some forms that asked if I smoke or use smokeless. Wouldn't make you a smoker but it would make you a tobacco user. Same difference as far as they're concerned. I did fill out one for my Doc that asked if I smoked. I answered no. It now says in my chart that I'm non nicotine dependent. Totally not true but if I'm ever outed I can remind him that he only asked if I smoked. Not if I used nicotine.

Nicotine usage is different from smoking. They need to get the categories right. I imagine in the next few years they will.

ONE person you do not ever want to lie to though, is your anesthesiologist. Seriously.

That person will know more about you than anyone else, while they are keeping you breathing (and other stuff) during surgery. Since that is a pretty important job, always tell your anesthesiologist stuff.

My Doctor changed my status to former smoker the first time I told her that I hadn't had a cigarette in 3 months, and I was very open to her about the fact that I still vaped and used nicotine. It's come up quite a few times since, she never changes the status. I don't think she promotes it on her own, not sure, but she seems very accepting of the fact that I am in fact a non smoker, the rest doesn't concern her.

If I was asked in an application I would definitely put a big no. If they tested I'd fight it, if I had to I'd claim it was an anomaly while vaping 0mg trying to get "clean". I'm about to switch states and try to get new health insurance... we'll see what kind of hoops I have to jump through but I'm pretty sure having "former smoker" on my chart for 3 years is going to help me.

this is absolutely ridiculous. she went for a work physical and drug test, she finally got a job. the form she filled out asked about tobacco usage. she was unsure of what to put down so she checked yes. when she was given the physical they asked her how much she smoked. she said, i dont smoke i vape. they said, ok we will put you down as a moderate smoker. my wife was actually ...... off. moderate smoker? my wife explained she hasn't lit a cigarette in over 3 years. i think its non-sense and insulting. im sick and tired of hearing people tell me no smoking in their house and that i am still a smoker. look, if you don't want to vape in your house, fine its your house. however call it what it is, its not smoking; not even close in either the act of vaping or smoking, or the health effects to the user or bystanders. my wife only vapes 2 MG strength yet was labeled a smoker. outrageous. people are so stupid
I'm a bit stumped here- you're livid your wife was documented as a moderate smoker yet she, whose been smoke-free for 3 years, answered yes to tobacco use.
How was it she wasn't sure?

she answered as such because she was afraid would show up on in the drug and blood test. i explained to her that she answered improperly. im just ...... that when they asked her how many packs a day she smoked, she said she said she hadn't smoked in 3+ years and she vapes, that makes her moderate smoker?? she said she didn't smoke when asked. the problem i have with this nonsense, vaping does not equal moderate smoking or any smoking. so what if someone chews? they use tobacco, are they too a moderate smoker? its not smoking either. they should be more specific

i explained to her that vaping does not equal tobacco use.

well i dont think it has any effect on her employment, but i still find it very odd when they question her about her response and she tells them she vapes, that now she's a moderate smoker. she responded by telling them she hadnt lit a cigarette in over 3 years. clearly not all forms of "tobacco" are the same. not all are smoked

Sorry folks, but in the US, and probably in other countries too, vaping is considered to be the equal to smoking tobacco by certain groups. Employers, businesses, hospitals, health insurance companies.

You don't agree, and I don't agree. It's a matter of a misunderstanding of science and the facts. But it is what it is.

Walmart now has "No Smoking" and "No E-Cigarettes" signs on their entrance doors. So does Starbucks. Heck, there are city parks in Cincinnati where you can't smoke or vape outdoors without getting a ticket.

Before I retired a couple of years ago, I worked in a hospital. When you apply to work there, you have to sign a statement that you do not use tobacco products, or you won't even get an interview. There is no use allowed anywhere "on campus", not even in your car or parking garage. If caught, or if you lie on your work forms, it is grounds for automatic termination. If you are a patient, Nicotine patch or gum is allowed only if you have a doctor's prescription on your person.

I listed my status as a non-smoker, and lied about my nicotine usage (vaping). I never heard of anyone get tested, although one supervisor did get fired for vaping in her office. I sneaked a vape here or there in the restroom or locker room.

they have designated areas to go including in their car. their attitude is as long as its out of sight, its out of mind. perfect. the people asking her were the people at the pee in the cup place, not her employer

I told my doctor during a March 2014 checkup visit...that I'd had my last cigarette on January 14th...and that I was vaping instead. He gave me a big "high 5" and immediately changed my chart/records to "former smoker". I tell him at every Check-up since then that I'm still vaping, even though he doesn't ask if I am, nor say anything about quitting.

In fact, he's been very interested in how vaping helped me quit the smokes, since he strongly suggested for years that I quit. He wants to pass along some info. on vaping to some of his other patients who are still longtime smokers.

If I were your wife, I think I'd have said, "No, I'm a former smoker...had my last cigarette 3 years ago," and left it at that. Of course, hindsight is always 20/20.

It's always fun when the Big 10 title comes down to UM-OSU, the last game of the season. Good luck to your boys, too
Indeed sir. As passionate as I am about the correct treatment of vape products and their incredible efficacy at helping us quit. Boy it's nice to have college football back.
