Will this work for a pass-thru?

My store bought pass thru quit working and I have another one that broke. So I thought I could try to repair the broken on. Basically it is a usb cord into a plastic holder, but the board inside was broken and some of the wire was unhooked from the solder joints. What I'm thinking of doing is running the two usb cord wires to the switch and then to the 510 connection. Would that be enough to safely operate a 5volt pass through? The one that broke had a voltage regulator in it, but I'm not sure if I need that if I'm shooting for a 5 volt device.

Without seeing what you have, I am going to make a couple of assumptions =]

The circuit board probably has at a minimum a mosfet to safely switch the voltage without damaging the low amperage switch. This means that the switch probably won't be able to handle the current that would be going through it if you hooked it up directly.

Well, went ahead and wired it up the way I thought it should be and it works, 5.2 volts straight off the usb hookup. What I would really like would be a VV passthru that could go from 3~ to 4.~ volts.

The switch will most likely burn up after a while , they are not rated for 1.5-2 amps that you will be drawing , I found a switch on digikey that fit into the tube on my old one that worked good ( I cannot find it to tell you the part number ! ) find a 1 amp +++ switch that is small .

I put together a pretty strait forward VV circuit. The regulator I use says it has a minimum input voltage of 4.5V so It might work out for your VV PT idea. Just replace the batteries with the voltage input from the usb. Make sure you do not use a computer to power it but a 2A adapter. Read into the specs on the Regulator to make sure it will handle what you are trying to do but I think it should work out.

I am planning to do something similar with a 12V automotive input.

And just to re-affirm that the switch may not last long as it is probably a low amperage switch.
