XS is silica based, it isn't toxic if not heat treated like the XC ceramic stuff. Always a good idea to burn or boil, but not vital to your health.

Oh, so the XS is basically the same thing as EkoWool, only made by 3m and not imported? Very nice to know. I'm a big fan of silica in general. Thanks for the info! I might have to just go ahead and order a 10ft length of 118 for all my wicking needs.

cheap SS 7x7 or 7x19 316 wire from ssdirect, ordered a ft each of 1/8" and 3/32" of each type for under $4 total shipped

I just tried to order some rope, but the shipping was really high. I called them and was told that they raised the shipping because of duties and taxes crossing the border. My order was $2.76 and shipping was $25.99

That's odd - even when I enter my address from back when I lived in Canada it said $25.99. What a bunch of bull.

Is it possible to cut ss rope with regular wire cutters? I don't have a dremel or a bolt cuter

And does 1 / 8 fit a rsst with the insulator or without?

If your wire cutters are really good AND sharp, it might be possible "once" then your wire cutters will be toast. I even had trouble using bolt cutters. Do yourself a favor and buy a cheap Dremel if you want to mess with it. Yes, the 1/8th fits the RSST stock with the insulator. I didnt like the heatsink effect though and use 3/32 with a "diaper" of mesh around the top half.

I've notice the kind of cutters that work like scissors are a no go for this job. But I have a pair that are more like pliers, in that the two blades make contact with each other. Those seem to work well with some force.

Another option is ordering from amazon. The prices are good and if you are a prime member you get free shipping. Be sure to get the Bare OD stuff though.

Sounds great.. Got a amazon link? How do I know if I have the stuff that works vs the stuff that will kill me?

I found my cable at Home Depot. 49 cents/foot. If you have a hardware superstore near you, you should find it there. Just make sure you don't buy galvanized steel.

Wow lucky, all the Home Depots and Lowes in my area had galvanized only except for 1/2"

Yeah, same with the Lowe's here but the HD had both galvanized and ss for each size. Either way all you need is a couple of feet to last a lifetime. You can wash and torch these things like new. I don't see a need for having more wicks than the number of tanks you own. Maybe a few as backups.

Just got my ss rope in from MMCarr. Looks like I'll be starting with the 7*7 3/32. It does have the threads in it but I've actually been able to using the outer 6 1*7's, remove the threads and wrap it back up, twice :D

Exciting stuff :)

What threads are you talking about? Are they bad? I just ordered the exact same thing... so, anything I need to know to prep it for use

There is a VERY fine nylon thread (about the diameter of a hair) running through the center of certain manufacturers of SS rope. Some people torch the SS rope to burn off the nylon, or as Statistic said, you can untwist the 7 braided strands and pluck the thread out, then the strands EASILY twist back together without any deformation. At least thats what I do.

Regarding the thread...

I start with the rope wick cut to size (you could do this last, AFTER untwisting and removing the thread....I'm always too impatient):

Pick at the end to pull a bundle free:

Unwind each bundle, kind of like untwisting a twist-tie. Try to keep track of which end is which....not sure if it matters for rewinding the bundle, but it won't hurt. If your eyes are good, you can see the thread peeking through in this pic:
IGoCCMtl.jpg

When you have all bundles unwound, you'll be left with the core bundle and the thread:

Remove the thread, and rewind the bundles. It helps to grasp the first one like this, then with a twist tie type movement you can wrap it back around the core:

One done:

Keep wrapping them around:

Sometimes, one bundle won't line up right because you didn't start it in quite the right spot:
PvpYi7Yl.jpg

Just tap the errant bundle against a hard surface, kind of like tapping down an analog, to slid them all even:

Almost done:

Sorry the pics are a bit blurry, did the best I could - you'd think a Galaxy S2 would have a decent camera on it - but my old crap LG had better macro shots...Hope this makes it a bit clearer.

Note: Anecdotal evidence, but the few times I've done this, it seems like it doesn't wick as well as just torching the thread out. Maybe the thread ash helps wick up stuff? Dunno - haven't done a proper test of it yet.
