Beware of electronic cigarettes; they may not be as advertised - JSOnline

Now comes the often quoted "Doctor" Miller to blog his infinite wisdom; however, he seems unable to get his disinformation right!

Electronic cigarettes have been touted as a useful option, but evidence to support their use is lacking. The Food and Drug Administration has not yet been granted authority to regulate electronic cigarettes as nicotine delivery devices, and without regulation, we have an environment in which every e-cigarette is different, the doses of nicotine vary and are unpredictable and the medium in which the nicotine is vaporized (which is most often ethylene glycol, an ingredient in antifreeze) varies from product to product.

In the six years since E Cigarettes were introduced, there has not been a single report of serious injury or illness connected with them. Six years and millions of consumers using them; what FDA study has ever been that comprehensive. E Cigarettes are not the solution for every nicotine addicted smoker; they are a solution for many that reduce harm to levels paralleling complete abstinence. FDA approved cessation products are practically useless! By all means, continue practicing your methodology for whomever you can successfully help, but get your facts straight on E Cigarettes and leave my solution alone!

Great comments!!

I just wanted to say that we had the nicest meeting of our WI vapers group. We peacefully coexisted with everyone at the place we met. It was refreshing. There is still some hope,,,

Not only did we peacefully coexist with the non-smoking population - nobody even looked at us funny. We got no funny looks, no challenges, no nothing.

Vicks, where did you meet? I'm normally a group of one when I vape in public, but I've had the same reaction. I've stood right beside hardcore anti-smoking zealots and not a word or complaint. In fact a couple have commented on how well the vapor from my strawberry cheesecake liquid smells- best marketing tool I've found for non-smokers.

Two incidence I need to mention. Yesterday while playing poker, the guy next to me said "what's that smell" after I took a puff and one of the other players mentioned my PV. He said "That's amazing, it smells like Vanilla". I added "and Strawberry". He agreed and I explained that I had dripped some vanilla after using my Strawberry Cheescake (I like to vary the flavor) and he was amazed. About two minutes later the fellow on the other side of him lit up a cigarette. He turned to him and said, that sure isn't an E-Cig, it stinks. I just had to smile.

The other incident really cracked me up. I went to breakfast and vaped with my coffee, people all around and not one word or look. On my way out I decided to sit down in a small vestibule and read my Email. I had just pulled out my PV and was ready to take a puff when a little old lady started to round the corner. Not to be insensitive, I waited until she was gone. However, I was lowering the PV from my mouth area as she came into view. There it was, that little fake cough all smokers/ex-smokers know so well as she worked her way by me and out the door. The training of smoke people.

We met at a bar in Waukesha - now, I did go down to the place a week or 2 prior, and spoke with the owner. Told him about vaping. Demonstrated. Explained that its NOT included in WI's smoking ban.

In short, gave him good, accurate information, and let him come to his own conclusions based on that information.

So much of our acceptance, I feel, will be linked to getting the right information to the business owners and general public before hand, so there are no knee-jerk reactions and posturing. The anti-smoking crusade has done so much in piss-poor education and scare tactics, that the public automatically falls into the 'hatred' responses that have been programmed into them.

I've said it for over a year now....our battle for our right to vape won't be won in the courts of law, it'll be won in the court of public opinion.

A few days ago, as I was watching my daughter at the pool, one of my neighbors while floating in the pool asked me "When are you going to smoke that thing again?? That is a pipe, isn't it?" She told me about how she had quit smoking a long time ago, but still missed the smell of her husband's pipe tobacco. I explained that it wasn't even smoke but just French Vanilla Coffee flavor and she was even happier about it (but she did get a bit of a "deer in headlights" look at the mention of anything technological. hehe).

Our Family just went to our 5-time-a-year outing (birthdays!) last night, first time any of us had been out and about since the no smoking ban.
My oldest sister still stubbornly smokes (it was her 69th birthday), my brother and 2nd sister have been quit for a few years. So out of sympathy for my smokin' sister I refrained from an inside vape as well. I probably will continue to do that. Our Class Reunion #45 will be at the same establishment on Aug. 21, so will see how many join me in the great outdoors!
But I have to say, this small town bar/restaurant smells soooo better, housekeeping became much less a strain, smokers can still go out in a protected area for a puff, so we did the same. They claim to have lost only one customer, who at best was not a pillar or stellar customer, (an argumentative alcoholic), so all in all very happy with the change.
These are indeed changing times. Generally everyone agrees in the concept of non-smoking public places, but also agree our legislators can be just hateful! (So, a toss-up?)
