take the button assembly out and make sure nothing has come out of alignment. Check the spring to make sure it's not leaning or sideways, check the screw to make sure it's tight, etc. take it apart and reassemble if necessary.
My first thought is that the spring is touching the inside of the tube. I can replicate that every time using the original stock spring which I over-streched and caused it to be crooked.
Try to put the batteries with the + to the switch. Also, if it doesn't work, remove some washers from the switch and check again.
Can you actualy push the button spring in? if not need to remove washers, other than that spring is out of alignment and touching bottom of battery and side of tube.
I had this same issue at 6 volts, I removed the lock washer from underneath the contact in the switch and no more problems. This does make it a bit harder to press but that is the way I like it anyway
Cheap way to fix the problem
Step 1) Take electric tape cut a few thin strips (0.25 inch wide) and tape that to the bottom of the spring that goes towards negative end of battery.
Step 2) Then pull out a long strip of electric tape and cut that (1 - 3 inches should do it) and cut that to 0.25 inches wide as well.
Step 3) Tape the long strip to the side and top of the pieces of tape on the spring. Go around the tope and side until its done (make sure its even all the way around).
Step 4) Make sure the spring fits inside the tube before putting everything back together. Also make sure switch can go through the spring to make contact to the negative end of the battery.
This will help prevent the spring from touching the negative end of the battery and prevent the spring from touching the inner walls of the tubes. I hope this helps.
