Wondering if anyone has any experience making wooden box mods. I was consulted by a friend to make one for him, but iv'e never really used wood in my mods. i was planning on using a piece of a branch cut in half sideways, with magnets, or some brass latches and hinges to keep it closed.
its going to have a 510 connection, and run a 14500 battery.
any tips with hollowing it out, or any common problems i would run into, would be greatly appreciated.

Classic.

Maybe, a drawing of what you intend would help.
Are you planning to hollow the branch along it's length?

Ok, there are a couple of solutions. It all depends on what tools you have available for the project.
If you have a wood lathe, you could mount the branch in the head stock and use a fostner bit such as these. Cutting Tools - Forstener Bits - Busy Bee Tools
If you only have a drill press, you can still use a forstner bit and hold that branch in a vise like this. Buy Pen Vise Self Centering - B2920 from Busy Bee Tools
Either way, you should start with a smaller bit and drill to final size in steps.
Is the branch fresh cut and therefore, wet? You should keep in mind that wood does shrink as it drys. If you cut a branch and make something with it right away, it may split and bend in 6 months as it completly drys.
More details and drawings may help.

We don't need vend hole for wood mod right?
Depends on the design.
Most wood mods have the battery door loose enough that it cannot hold in the pressure build up from a battery failure.
If the mod is designed to have an airtight battery compartment, I would put in a vent.

If the sliding door is by some sort of dovetail groove, there should not be any need. The wood should break and the door should pop out in the event of a failure. Also, that kind of door is not airtight.
If the battery chamber were a sealed metal kind of thing, a vent would be advisable.
If you drilled out a piece of wood and then epoxied a meal tube in for the battery chamber, vent that.
