I'm sure we could use a mild (dish washing) soap, but I'd wipe it off with clear water pretty quickly then re-oil my mod. Soap and water won't hurt the outside if it's poly coated. I just treat mine like I would a nice piece of solid wood furniture.

I would think if you don't messy stuff on the wood, then either wash messy stuff off the hands before handling the mod, or use a metal mod until such time as you can wash the offending stuff off your paws.
