It goes even further than that. Nicotine per se improves productivity, because it allows the user to concentrate on boring tasks and to be vigilent. When I became abstinent from nicotine about 22 years ago, I was just as impaired behind the wheel of a car when stone, cold sober as any drunk. I felt as if I had lost 30 or 40 IQ points.
