World No Tobacco Day 2012

I was a smoker for almost 20 years, as you probably already know from reading this blog, and I quit this year and became a proud vaper! Which is why it comes as no surprise that I was totally un-aware of a "World No tobacco Day" taking place on May 31st 2012.

What is World No tobacco Day?

Here are a few interesting excerpts from the World Heath Organization Tobacco Free Initiative article:

The campaign will focus on the need to expose and counter the tobacco industry's brazen and increasingly aggressive attempts to undermine the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) because of the serious danger they pose to public health.

World No Tobacco Day 2012 will educate policy-makers and the general public about the tobacco industry's nefarious and harmful tactics.

On World No Tobacco Day 2012, and throughout the following year, WHO will urge countries to put the fight against tobacco industry interference at the heart of their efforts to control the global tobacco epidemic.

It's essentially a global campaign targeted at policy-makers and the general public to wake and smell the tobacco - yes I said it.

I can't say I disagree, they raise many valid points, and as an ex-smoker and current vaper I am fully aware of the evil that is BIG TOBACCO!

I also like that there is a "World No Tobacco Day", in fact I think everyday should be a NO TOBACCO DAY. This is the perfect opportunity for the vaping community to educate smokers and the world at large about the positives of vaping, and dis-spell all the negative and untruthful propaganda being disseminated by the FDA.

However, if I wear my paranoia hat for second my only concern would be, will the WHO go after vaping one day with the same ferocity if we don't take a stand and educate the masses before the FDA poisons the well for good?

Food for thought.

Of all things..... South Park kicked me off my high horse about Big Tobacco. I don't like BT for obvious reasons but the BT South Park episode made me put some things in perspective. They're just making a product people are buying, albeit a deadly product but it's in demand and somebody has to do it. Imagine if they stopped? Riots, bloodshed, think 1930s prohibition. BT does a fair amount of the damage but the social damage, treating people like 3rd class citizens for smoking(jobs refusing to hire nicotine users), the goes on can be contributed to self righteous groups such as ANT. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend this particular South Park. Entertaining and enlightening.

What will I be doing on the 31st? Vapin away. If there's a "no tobacco" thingy going on close by I just might stop by and vape on there.

I know i'm probably a jerk for saying this but I believe people should just mind there own business and let other people kill there selves if they want to.

Close, but no cigar (sorry...

), we didn't have e-cigs as an option when I wanted to quit years ago. Now is all the more reason to be a responsible* vaper and be a positive advocate for 'harm reduction'.

When I smoked I was well aware of the fact that cigs would kill me and that was my own business just like vaping is and owning a gun.

The former is a bad habit; the latter a great practice for self-preservation, so much like vaping (see 'responsible'* above)!
