Hi everyone,

I need some advice, as I am thinking of reccomending an E-Cig to my dad. He has had heart trouble lately and narrowing on arteries. He also still smokes analogs.

Should I reccomend / buy an E-Cig for him? The obvious answer would be yes, but I would just like to get a second opinion.

Cigarettes are known to cause heart disease and certainly are not great for the cardiopulmonary system in general. Personal vaporizing is not proven safe but there have been enough studies conducted to conclude its likely far safer than continuing to smoke. My opinion is the more people that choose vaping as an alternative to their smoking addictions the better.

Going to chime in here. :) I smoked for 40+ yrs, including after a heart attack (I know, I know). 3 months ago I switched to vaping. I am already down to 6mg nic (next step down is 0 nic) and my health has really improved. No more smokers cough, I breathe better, more stamina and all my blood work from the doc looks better too...well except my sugar is up just a tiny bit, but I blame that on the cinnamon roll I'm vaping...lol. I say go for it.

I'm not saying the same will happen with your Dad but I began vaping at 59 yrs/ smoked for 44 yrs and my health has improved remarkably as witnessed by my GP, Surgeon and Dentist. Your Dad has some health issues right now and smoking will only add to them- many seniors here at ECF have proven it's never too late to stop smoking.

If my kids had recommended vaping to me yrs ago I would have been forever in their debt and ever so grateful. Hopefully he is open to your suggestion.
Wishing You and Your Dad the Very Best of Luck.

I would try and get him on it. They're better than analogs.

My father smokes a pack of Dunhills every day. He also has COPD, Emphysema, and Asthma. I tried to give him an ego kit with Dunhill flavor and he used it for all of 25 seconds and never touched it again. It bothered his throat.

If your father is willing to try, then definitely make sure he does.

I would suggest you talk to him about it first, see how he feels about possibly making the switch or at least supplementing. We have all been there, and know that NO ONE can force us to make the change until WE are ready. Make sure he is ready. If he is resistant, make sure you present the option to just try to cut back some, that it doesn't have to be all or nothing. Let him move at his own pace.

I agree with tidegirl. TALK to him first! Show him some of the equipment...including the cig-a-likes (he may be more comfortable with that form factor). Tell him about it..how it really does "feel" like smoking, and he'll still get his nic and his hand to mouth habit. Be cheerful and supportive...not pushy.

I hope you succeed. I have/had high BP and heart problems (among other things) and smoked for 43 years. The improvement in my health as regards my heart and BP is significant since I started vaping. Very significant!

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it vape. If you do get the horse to vape make sure to have a video camera handy as that would be hilarious! Be persistent but not overly pushy. Found most of my smoking friends/family whom I gave free kits to in my initial excitement over quitting smoking tried it for a week and gave up. After they saw me still vaping after three months they tried it again and over half dropped their smoking habits. Your success in quitting yourself will be the best advertisement to reach your father.

This is good advice. I was skeptical of e-cigs too. I smoked and vaped for two weeks, then I found I actually preferred vaping.

I would talk to him, see how he feels about it, THEN see if you can go with him to his doctor, see what they recommend.

Also, fathers can be stubborn as hell. My dad is sorta like that. He doesn't smoke, but when it was time to take away the salt ( kidney problems..) he freaked right out and dug his heels in until the last second. SO.. Talk with your Pops. See what he wants to do, what he'd like to see. I've got my mother switching to an e-cig, and she's overall happy with it. She IS in the middle of withdrawal though, and sorta miserable at the moment. But, what can ya do. She's committed, and doing pretty well. Better than she has in the last 50 years of smoking, anyway!

Good luck to you and your Dad.

Thanx for the responses everyone, I will definitely suggest it to him again at a later stage. Maybe once he sees me smoke-free for 3 or 4 months he'll change his mind. At the moment he just says he'll just stop smoking them(analogs), and then lights up another.

I really hope he changes his mind soon.
