Worst Situations At Your Local Shop?

Hey guys, I had a terrible experience with my local shop the other day and it got me thinking that i would share it, but also ask the community what the worst thing that has ever happened to them in a local shop?

I order most, if not all of my stuff online, mainly for the prices. But 2 weeks ago i noticed one of my local vape shops was hiring. I applied. First interview was amazing, I liked the manager and shift manager and vise versa, we were laughing and chatting about vaping the majority of the time. Got a call yesterday from the Manager. She had asked if i could come in for a second interview with the GM of the franchise and I was excited as hell.

Got there, pulled a seat up at the front bar and sat and chatted and vaped with the shift manager while i waited for the GM to be ready. I generally love all the people in there. They called me back.

I walked in, made eye contact with the GM and gave him a firm handshake. No smile ever showed on his face this entire interview mind you. He pulled up my app and went to town on me harder than anyone ever has in there life. I am a delivery driver and work for 4 dollars a trip plus tips. The first thing he asked about that was "What the hell are you doing? Why would you belittle yourself and work for that?" I gave the best answer i could, and in my head i was thinking "why is it any concern of yours?". That was the easiest part about the whole thing. Next he asked if i was in school. I said yes, and he asked for what. I said computer programming and he seemed happy for me.. "There you go! that is a good field to get in to! Do you game?" Weird question for an interview but i said yes. From there it was 10 minutes of asking what i played, why i played, and threw in something about this generation wasting there lives on that stuff.

Part of the job was to be able to talk to a wide demographic. He asked if i vaped and when i said yes, he asked about my set up. Asked if i was vaping their juice, i said no not at the moment. His rebuttle was that their juice was ALL i should be vaping. He asked if i knew anyone over 45 that vaped. I said no, this is where it got ugly.. He said "what the hell man? If you dont know anyone over 45, how are you supposed to sell to someone over 45. how are you going to break it down for them if you dont even know anyone?" In my head i was thinking that it shouldnt matter. If someone has questions, no matter the age, you should be able to break it down into simple terms, or talk about it up to advanced levels..not that hard. But he kept pounding. Shooting down every response i had.

In this moment i could feel something i never felt before. My stomach tightened up, my breathing became irregular, in a matter of seconds i was shaking, hot, and about to pass out. I was scared to death. Their voices became distant and my own voice in my head was louder than anything i could hear. I dont even know what the GM was rambling on about anymore. All i could think was i was going to pass out. So i mentioned that. The manager (who was amazing the whole time btw) ran out the room and grabbed me a bottle of water and i sucked it down and it began going away. We finished out the interview, terribly, and i was embarrassed as heck but we finished.

After i went out to the lobby and sat at the bar with the shift manager and another employee and cooled off. My body was red and full of hives almost. My face was red and i was drenched in sweat.

I do not know what happened. All i could think was "this is why i shop online" haha.

What is your guys worst experiences at a shop?

LOL,
Not EVERY person is suitable for every job...
Perhaps working face to face with the public is NOT your forte.
Live and learn...Plenty of jobs out there.

KentA: I'm positive OP was not offered a position.

Cheers

It is more important that the OP left knowing he didn't want to work for this manager.
True true...
1) Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want.
2) you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.
3) when you change how you look at things, the things you look at change.

Cheers

The worst thing i saw wss a person come in for an ultra low ohm coi. Something below .1. The employee wrapped a nickel coil installed in an rda without one word about battery safety, and the guy was carrying a mech mod. MECH'S DONT DO TC!!!!@@@

Ni80 is used in power mode.

He was talking about a Pure Nickel Build that is used for generally a TC mod, not Nichrome80, two completely different wires. A pure nickel build on a mech, no way that nickel is getting to hot with that build, nickel is entering the vapor stream, gradually giving the user nickel poisoning, nor is that wire designed for that much heat abuse, give it a day or two the coils will have popped. Battery safety also comes into play here, 0.1ohm build = 42amps CDR at fresh charge on a mech, no battery can handle that abuse for long putting a ticking time bomb in someone's hand, only type of unit I can see handling that load is a triple parallel mech box mod (3*20amp batteries = 60amps, 3*30amp batteries = 90amps). The whole situation is an unsafe build, if it had been me asked to do the build my reply would be "You are getting around a 0.25ohm build lowest, want any lower than that, learn your battery safety, Ohms and Watts laws, and learn to build it yourself, I'm not handing you a vaping version of Russian Roulette and having your family come back at me to sue me for a wrongful death or other such litigation for your stupidity."

It sounded like the GM was slightly over stepping his boundaries with some of his responses. That is also how some managers are and they might not intended to offend you, but it might come across like that during an interview scenario.

I'm sorry you lost your composure during the interview, that must have been difficult. I've had some managers who say things that are borderline offensive, but in a joking manner and usually after I got to know them a bit. Also, I worked as a delivery driver in the past for a restaurant and it's the norm to have a lower wage plug tips as a service worker, there was no reason for him to comment on that.

Good luck on your job search, check out some restaurants. People our age who go to school full time usually find that jobs with tips get yield the most and serving positions or bar back positions are decent.

Super crap thing is that I never have an issue with this typically. I am a people person and can generally pull up a chair and chat with anyone! My work history is pretty extensive and that includes retail positions, this just seemed like bad character lol. Idk, thanks for the responses guys!

Personally, if I were the GM, I would have had you handle a few customers of various ages and experience levels to see how you handled yourself - even if he had to bring in a few "ringers" to try to trip you up. To me, that would be a better way to see if you would be a "fit" in the store. All the questions in the world will not show anyone how you handle yourself in a real life situation. I think that something like this is especially important in a vape shop, where some knowledge of the products and how they work is extremely important, especially when dealing with new vapers or those who insist on getting equipment that they are not ready for.

By the way, I am 66, and appreciate and treasure good customer service. We are very lucky in that my daughter and her boyfriend have found a couple of excellent vape shops in our area that do not overcharge (one shop's pricing on a Nautilus Mini is comparable to online pricing), do not try to sell customers on a product they do not want, and are extremely helpful when problems arise, even if the product was not purchased from them.

Sounds like a crap interview, but there might have been a bit more to it. Customer service people often have to deal with irrational and irritating, even sometimes personal, complaints. It could have been the intention of the interviewer to see how you would handle such a confrontation. You can teach a novice everything about they need to know about vaping much more easily than you can teach someone how to interact with the public and/or change their personal character. Still, the "ringer" idea mentioned above is a much better method of testing ability, as it leaves no "bad feelings" between mgmt and the interviewee. I love using ringers, even used to send people in to buy stuff occasionally, just to raise the spirits of the staff. It's just the best way to see how they actually handle themselves.

You need some confidence building, it hurts me to see that you allowed this person to treat you like this. I certainly would have excused myself from the um.....interview......w/in the first 3 minutes :)

That said, everybody and their brother got into the vape biz when it got hot, you have all kinds of nut cases running some of them, believe me. People who now know everything about vaping (yeah right) who were roofers or coffee makers or ditch diggers before this LOL

Sorry this Ahole abused you like that. You certainly don't deserve it. :) You seem like a really really sweet person.........you just need to toughen up a little bit. :)

Guess what. Nobody interviews like that anymore......that baiting style went out back in the 80s sometime.

A good and enlightened manager/leader treats people the way they wish to be treated.

Only idiots who don't know how to interview people, and read some books on "how to do it" come up with silliness like this.

No excuse for it. None at all. It's a power trip anyway. I don't know any successful people who think or interview like this, but in a low wage field I guess you're going to get some jerks like this who also don't have good education and training either.

Yeah, sure, it's an outdated and ineffective method. I'm not promoting it, just offering it as a possible explanation for otherwise completely irrational behavior. Such methods are, however, still used. There are crap managers everywhere, but yes, especially in low wage fields. When you are picking your lower level management from a very narrow field (narrowed by the compensation available and the total pool of employees), and then promoting to mid level management from a still narrower field (often quite rapidly, in an expanding retail business), it is entirely possible to find yourself choosing the person you are least worried about, rather than most happy to promote.

What is more, since we are talking about an emerging market, it is easily conceivable that a person who was very successful as a self-employed solo-act can find themselves expanding their business to include employees without having any idea how to deal with those employees. I really don't think this sort of thing would be surprising to see in a new, small scale, privately owned business. Some people are good at doing and crap at leading/teaching.

I have hired a manger like this myself for just such a position (he's long gone now). I was new to having my own business and promoted him to management based on his technical skills, not realizing that technical skills and leadership skills are worlds away from one another. He treated my employees like this and I had to fire him. I should have gotten the boot with him, as it was my mistake to promote him away from his area of expertise; but sometimes being the boss means you pay to learn and get to keep playing.

Again, I am not defending such an interviewing tactic, but simply offering an explanation other than "complete emotional idiocy" to explain it. There are certainly much better ways for an interviewer to learn what he/she needs to know about the interviewee. Perhaps I wasn't clear about that?

I have found just the opposite. The mouth to lung vapor is being ignored. Everything is youth oriented. Anything over 6mg liquid is non existent. Worst of all every aspect of their marketing is nothing but a turn off to smokers interested in beginning vaping.
