I'm not sure if everyone saw this post from SJ which provides some additional details on the migration:

It's also worth noting, based on my own experience guess, that this was the largest Forum migration in the world. That would be over 14 million posts, over 200K user accounts, over 500K threads, plus blogs, galleries and you name it. EPIC! to say the least.

Well done!

:)

yup! and what a coincidence sj was on an 'adventure' at just that time! :D i wonder how that migration date was picked and by whom? :?:

LMAO :)

Better ask SJ. /lol All I can offer is a guess and that would be the programmer aka his VERY geeky and VERY talented brother named "Sir Toby". Of course, coordination and a team effort is essential and we have seen that in spades.

Imagine for a moment that you start cooking dinner for say 100K guests, who are all cued up outside your front door waiting for it to open and they are all hungry as heck! :)

PRESSURE time :)

Actually, the largest migration I know of was IGN with over 100 million posts.

Right - and somewhat more in the way of resources at their disposal :)

Perhaps in terms of resources to threads, ECF would rank pretty highly

I agree, they did an excellent job. But was it really necessary? I know of at least one much larger forum that continues to run on vBulletin. Here's the stats from it:
Threads 6,756,290
Posts 81,959,884
Members 851,666
Active Members 38,294

Yes, it was necessary. Principally because increasing numbers of security holes were being discovered in vBulletin and we simply could not put our membership at risk.

The larger forum you speak of may have the resources to cope with this, but we certainly don't. We need to be on an actively maintained software which patches its editions proactively.

Haha, fair point.

I'm willing to bet, though, that presenting to a hostile crowd in DC shortly after Mitch Zeller had spoken, and with exceedingly intense jetlag was, well, at least as uncomfortable as the migration process. But who's counting ;)

Yes, you guessed correctly :)

Looks great.
Is there a way to make the tiny, baby blue type more readable?

Yup! Our eyes are not what they used to be when we first joined ECF!

Ouch. How did that go, SJ? And thanks for doing that, BTW!

It was very interesting, actually - I'm being somewhat unfair: It wasn't exactly a hostile crowd. The main issue, really, is that when you're explaining things to a highly educated Washington crowd, who know exactly the way things are done in DC, you feel a little naive trying to explain the reality as you see it (even if you might be one of the most knowledgable people in the room on that particular "reality")

In other words, the general attitude is: "Yeah, of course, but so what? - this is politics!".

Also - Mitch had very cleverly pre-empted discussion about the CDC data by saying: "I challenge anyone to seriously interpret the CDC data on adolescents vaping as being positive".

Naturally, a big part of my presentation was not on saying that "e-cigarettes are responsible for the decline in smoking" (even if that's ontologically true), but to say, simply: "if we believe in harm reduction - as I believe Mitch Zeller truly does, then the data the CDC has presented are exactly what we would hope to see at the population level".

I don't know - perhaps it went down fine. But it was somewhat uncomfortable.

Very nice. :D

But yeah, it is all about politics--and money... Or is it the same thing?

Thanks, SJ!

The 'Burgh, PA.
those URGLY subscriber orange things... but that's valuable info to me, so I've just left them alone. But they're huge space hogs, and URGLY.

Just my opinion (of course)...but I much prefer the previous subscriber "badges". They were "3-dimensional" and "professional" looking. The new ones are "2-dimensional" and look like something my 2 year old granddaughter drew with her crayons.

if you're extra nice maybe he'll find a way to move name and title to the top ;)

Please don't tell anyone (and I'll deny it if confronted)...but...I've (slowly) become accustomed to automatically looking left under the avi (and under that stoopid mood thingy--which I really don't even see any more)...to easily and quickly see the user name.

We're hoping they will be transformed into ribbons--for a clean and space-saving look. Ahem... :)

I'm getting used to it too, but, If the mood went under the name & title, as the first banner/ribbon, it would be so much nicer and easier to read.

Thanks so much for greying the background & adding location and join date. Very nicely done.

Supporting really could be a banner/ribbon only --- afterall, the only people with Moods or "no moods" to the non-supporting members are non-supporting members. The Mood Bar alone indicates Supporting Member. :2c:
