This is done with a chemical process because the engravings are intact. Media blasting takes out the engravings from what I've seen

Ok, to clarify the process since I honestly don't care if others do it.
I am not going to get into specifics since most of that can be found in Metallurgy guides and searches. These are only the broad strokes of the process.
First I mask off the engravings by filling them with cyanoacrylate (yup....super glue!) with a syringe and needle. Then I do the same with a bigger applicator for threads and sensitive part areas. Next up is a 25 minute acid bath that is very comparable to the aluminum anodizing process. At that point,
I rinse and soak the parts in distilled water and then pull off the thread masking, but leave the engravings covered. The parts are then blown completely dry with compressor air. At this point it looks pretty close to the finished product. But the final step is......wait for it....mild media blasting.
But I do stress MILD! I prefer coconut husks but walnut shells are comparable. I only blast enough to even the coat out everywhere and mainly to get the remaining super-glue out of the engravings and tight spaces. Then I feather over the threads and other previously masked areas to make the new finish appear continuous everywhere.
Does it hurt, weaken or compromise the Stainless Steel over it's lifetime, at all..NO! In fact, it is an approved finishing method for firearms and many other areas where metal fatigue is critical.
