My DH doesn't like to buy stuff already made if he can do it cheaper. He is always saying is "It would be cheaper to make that" He is a DIY type of guy, this can be a good thing most of the time....LOL It's those times that it just doesn't come out like you expect it to that can turn into something interesting.

What has your DH made that has worked perfectly or looked really nice? And what are some of the projects that.....well.....you just have to laugh at?

My DH decided he wanted to make a meat smoker out of a steel cabinet we had sitting around. Okay that's cool. He worked on it for a few weeks every night after work. I can see the whole thing in the process of being built and every day it looks more weird. The day comes that he tells me he is finished and I just look at him like seriously......you're done???? I go out side and I just bust out laughing and you could have sworn I just killed his new pet!! But everyone who seen it after he was finished had the same reaction I did......"It's a what?"

So here it is.........it looked much better before he put the insulation around it  We call it his Beverly Hillbillies smoker :lol: Right next to his shiny BBQ grill!!

Mike is an over builder. If it calls for a 1x2 he uses a 2x4 and giant bolts!
Mike built a chicken coopp. O.K. he fenced in a 2 stall horse stall (one side of it and out 10 feet. So 4 chickens had a 10x20 foot space.)we had in St. Cloud. When I say fenced in I mean it wasn't just chicken proof..we could have kept Bengal Tigers in there! Some where in my mess of pictures I have one of the coop..I will look.

Thank goodness Mike never wanted a smoker..we could probably have smoked cows whole!

My poor husband is not handy at all. Anything he hammers a nail into, has hammer dents.

He used to be good with VW cars. We had several that he chopped up and turned into baja bugs.

He built us a fantastic dune buggy that we used to "run Glamis and Dumont" with..(those are great sand dune places)...fun days !

This is the only picture I could find. The little girls were my daughters stepdaughters for a time. They are all grown up now! The coop is huge and we had 7 chickens to start after 10 years were were down to one..on the retirement plan of course! The coop was built for 4 white leghorns which died from a chicken flu or something. The vet said chickens are prone to all sorts of illness and they were old to begin with. (They came with the house)
The white chickens got to roam the 2 1/2 acres for a few hours a day. The 7 black chickens were just babies and I was trying to teach them to come back to the coop at dinner time. The grands were up visiting (3 little girls baby Jake and Shawn all under 10!) and we let them out to roam..in a few hours we went back...what a mistake! Chickens everywhere and kids trying to corral them..not happening! We tried getting laundry baskets to trap them, blankets to herd them..nothing! Those little critters managed to wear us all out.
Finally I went in the coop after sending the kids up on the porch and put food down..I went out to whistle for the "girls" and turned around and saw them all lined up behind me! In we went..who knew they learned!

Calm before the storm: Jessie and Kayla

Jessie and Shawn caught one and then it flapped..so much for that! This was a different day..the chickens were older.

Well, I don't have a husband and don't want one but my BF has built several boats & houses. He's kinda like Fudgey's DH when it comes to doing things himself rather than pay somebody else to do what he can do for cheaper. Especially working on cars. He will NOT, I repeat NOT ever take his car in for repairs and if anybody he knows has a car problem he wants to fix it for them. He's a very good mechanic and boat & house builder. Oh, and he also built a huge work shed and a shed for my motorcycle for winter storage. I ride in the winter but I don't like leaving it outside in the nasty weather even if it's covered. Sorry I don't have any funny screw-ups. He seems to be good at what ever he does.

Fudgey, that smoker looks like it would sputter and cough! Either that or it looks like an extra from "Lost in Space". The good thing, though, is that you saved a fair amount of money; those smokers aren't cheap.

MK, I guess you can truly call those free range chickens...

My husband is most definitely not handy. To his credit, he would be the first to admit this. It's usually just safest around here to do things myself or hire someone else. Point in case: He had a ladder accident about a month ago and fell off the roof. He wasn't hurt badly, lucky for him (and me!). He tends to just jump right in without thinking or planning things out.....

Lisa! Mike is the opposite..he will plan for a month..go buy everything he needs and then he sort of forgets to do it! When I have pestered him enough or finally put the stuff away..he decides to start...and then it begins..where is the screw I laid on the kitchen table? (6 months ago), I need to go to home depot..I don't have the right lug nuts..whatever those are we must have 500 of them! Then it's hand me this, hold that.

Terry..showoff!

DH was a mechanic a long time agao and if he can fix it, it doesn't go anywhere else!!

My hubby is not much of a handyman, thank goodness. So I don't really get to deal with the lovely things you gals posted. He can for the most part fix cars, and unless it's computer related he'll do it himself. But like with the brakes on my car he'll do things like take the warning clips off the brake pad, so now I won't know when I'm starting to need to get new ones. But for a while I'll have working brakes. He also won't let someone else do it if he can do it. I need a new belt in my car, but won't let the dealership do it for $160 when HE can do it, but the problem is he was told over the winter and I'm still waiting for that belt to get replaced.

When we 1st got married I bought a really nice expensive radio for his truck and surprised him by having it installed. He didn't like the fact that someone else did the work. AGH, I really thought I was doing something nice for him.
