I've got the list. The biggest headache is trying to study something that I don't have in my hands. Plus, there are quite a few available at good prices around here, but I don't know what they've got on them, and how much more it would run me to make them compliant. It would suck to get a deal on a used rifle, only to end up paying as much as a new one. I guess it's like when I first started vaping . . . 510? 306? 901? atty? carto? drip?

Well, at least you know why pre-ban rifles bring a higher price now. They're 'grandfathered' and you don't have to worry about compliance parts. The list of compliance parts is mainly for people who are assembling a rifle from a parts kit and installing them on a ready made receiver. You should be okay buying any rifle so long as the person you are buying it from didn't assemble it themselves from a kit. The biggest worry would be if someone took a thumbhole rifle and put an imported stock back on it (a big no-no as far as compliance parts). If you're in doubt, check the importation date that should be stamped into the receiver to see if it's a pre or post 90.

So, the short answer is: Leave it as it came from the factory or make sure anything you add to it is made in the USA and you should be okay.

Ah, what they hey. I'm bored so I'll post the list of all parts that fall under 922r just in case someone wants a pistol grip or night sights on their gun. To be considered 'made in the USA' and not subject to 922r you can have no more than 10 of the following 'controlled' parts:
Receiver, Barrel, Front Trunnion, Rear Trunnion, Muzzle Attachment, Bolt, Bolt Carrier, Gas Piston/Puck, Trigger, Hammer, Disconnector, Buttstock, Forearm/Handguard, Pistol Grip, Magazine Body, Magazine Follower, Magazine Floorplate.

Any individual can assemble a non ATF controlled weapon (full auto/short barreled rifle or shotgun) for personal use so long as they do not intend to sell it. So you could buy a parts kit, replace the trigger group and stock with american made parts and be within compliance using unmodified imported magazines.

To be 922r compliant you can have no more than 10 foreign parts from the above list, not change 10 parts so it's a little bit easier.

As long as there are no more than 10 imported parts is what I've gotten over the past couple days. An SKS has 17 parts as defined by the list, so only 7 would need to be changed. I found that can be really simple after a few more hours of research. Replace the trigger group with a newer, more reliable one - 3 parts. Newer magazine - 3 parts. Almost there at that point.

It really sounds like I am preferring the SKS. I don't think I would change anything in all actuality. I just wish I had've gone shopping a few years back. I could have saved quite a bit. Another reason for thinking more along the SKS/AK lines - the ammo is the same price as the 5.56 AR round.

I knew there was a number 10 there somewhere, but as you are finding out, 922r is a pretty simple process.

If you go with an sks, definately add a murray firing pin. It eliminates all chances of slam fire. MilSurpStuff.com : Murray’s SS SKS Firing Pin, Murray's SKS Parts, MSKSFP

If you go hi cap mags, buy quality over cheap price. I like the tapco 20 rounders, IF I use hi-cap mags. They are poly, but they never fail to feed. Tapco SKS Magazines

As far as stocks go, I have built just about every configuration out there, tapco seems to fit the best. There is one thats new that I have been wanting to build, but they are on back order: Store | Shernic Gun Works

To be honest, the SKS is nearly perfect as it comes. Its heavy, but built like a tank. Changing the stock will save you a little weight, but most people add hi cap mags, scopes, lights etc, so its a wash. I prefer to use the standard magazine with stripper clips. You will be surprised how fast you can load and shoot 100 rounds of ammo.

Man I remember not to long ago how cheap good surplus ammo was. I used to get S&B shipped to my front door case loads at a time. I think it was something like 112$ for 1000 rounds of 223. About 123$ for 1000 rounds of 9mm, and 7.62x39 could be found so freakin cheap lol, I still got some cans of it I never burnt up. I used to go through Gulf Coast ammunition, but now I rarely find anyone lower than cheaper than dirt.

Wow. This place has turned into a zombie. Everybody else must be having good weather too. After taking care of some chores and messing around outside, I'll take some pictures of the SKS. I got it with 600 rounds. Started breakdown and cleaning it last night. I'll definitely be replacing the firing pin. This one is in great condition, but I would still like to have a spring for insurance.

Nice rifle . . . not much in the way of recoil, but the guy I bought it from thought it was too much - that's one reason he was selling it. I only put about 50 rounds through, but I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to getting it cleaned and out again.

We're getting ready for dinner. I'll take some pics of all my defense items after that. I just ran across this though, and I thought it was quite handy for a little .22 rifle. It weights all of 3lbs and is extremely compact for on the go.

That's the re-issue of the old AR-7. They're actually pretty good for what they are. It looks like they've moved the safety from inside the trigger guard to the side though so it's less 'lefty friendly' than the older model. On the plus side, they're water tight and they float! I'll still take a 10/22 though. I'll use a tether or make sure I have my rare earth magnet on a string handy.

That's something else to add to a bug out bag. Commonly called lure retrieval magnets, they hold a pretty fair amount of weight compared to their size and make retrieving anything under moving water possible if you're patient. I've retrieved glasses, knives, rod-n-reels, and of course fishing lures with one. Didn't even have to get my arms wet to do it either!

Here is the SKS. It's just slapped together because I'm cleaning the gunk out of it. It was pretty nasty at first. Bathing in Break Free right now. I'm going to love that thing! I need to get a firing pin, new magazines, and the cleaning rod. Maybe I'll get a different stock and see if anybody wants to buy these.

If you get the cleaning rod, you will need the bayonet or something to keep it locked onto the rifle. The bayonet when its folded or when its extended, lock the rod in place. When its released and not locked, then the rod slides out. Paratrooper is shorter than the standard SKS, so make sure you order the right bayonet and cleaning rod.

The bayonet lug was cut off, so I was planning on including it in a Mutt Paracord-wrapped PVC Cleaning Kit. These things are pretty cool, you should check them out. :thumb:

EDIT: Oh yeah, and why was I not warned about the trap waiting for me in the part of the cleaning kit in the buttstock?
