Yeah, but it's a good mess. A friend told me she doesn't bother going through the mess of pealing the tomatoes. She just cores them and runs then through the food processor and then freezes them in Ziplock bags. Works like a charm and so much easier. I've made tomato soup with them and I never want to use canned soup again.
I learned my lesson with the melons. They do take up a lot of space. I'm going to have to rethink how to plant stuff next year, I miss picking peppers and cukes. The tomatoes just choked them out. I'd love to have two raised planters with an arch between them, Let the tomatoes, cukes and peas grow over the arch and the veggies just hang down for easy picking, That would leave the garden with enough room for carrots, radishes, onions etc.
I think it's wonderful to get the littles involved in gardening, Good for you for encouraging them.
