Measured continuity and resistance with Multimeter, 18650 ...

Hi Guys,

very unwisely i used my multimeter to "perform" both
a continuity and resistance measurement on a charged 18650 cell.
Unfortunately i also tried both of these two measurements both ways

1. red on +, black on -
2. red on -, black on +

The battery did not heat up, no sparks, no fume. The multimeter showed nothing /unplausible stuff depending on which pole i held the probes. Multimeter seems to work fine. Probe lines are fused 200mA/250v. No fuse applied as far as i can tell.

I would ask you, if i did damage the cell by doing so. If someone could explain what i technically did by my doing i would also be thankful.

Thanks for your time

Beginning the vaping journey

Hi all,

I've been reading post after post on these forums of people who have had improved health benefits after quitting smoking and taking up vaping. I have my last pouch of tobacco and have started to vape a little on the side.

Reasons for switching:
Monetary...smoking is just far too expensive in Australia
Fatigue... I am tired a lot and think this may be part in due to smoking
Lung capacity... I find myself out of breath and coughing more as I get older.

I am posting this so I can look back on my journey.

Thank you for being a part of it.

INNOKIN KROMA 217 KIT WITH Z-FORCE TANK KIT review by hittman

I’m happy to be here today in order to present another review for Innokin. I’ve always associated Innokin with quality made products and today I’m here to talk about yet another one that was sent to me for this review. I was actually sent two of the Kroma 217 kits that come with the new Z-Force tank. Many people have been asking for Innokin to make a mod that uses 21700 batteries and that is what they have done. The Kroma 217 can also use 20700 and 18650 batteries as well with the included battery adapter. It also has features like we’ve seen in past Innokin devices like Coil+ and Refresh. The new Z-Force tank has some really good features that I’ll talk about more later and uses the new DuoPrime ZF coils. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a new coil from Innokin so was very excited to give them a good test.

INITIAL THOUGHTS:

I received the carbon fiber and river wood versions for review samples. The packaging for the Kroma 217 kits is what I have become used to seeing from them. It is simple but nice and everything is packaged in recyclable material. On the front of the brown cardboard packaging is a color picture of the device contained inside and on the back of the package is a list of the contents of the kit along with an authenticity code.

upload_2021-12-29_10-0-41.png

Once the packages were opened, I was truly impressed by how sharp looking the Kroma 217 mods were. I was really impressed with the carbon fiber model which has a gunmetal colored frame. I just thought to myself “wow that’s a nice looking mod”. I feel like my pictures just don’t do them justice.

On one side of the high grade zinc alloy frame is the Kroma 217 name stamped into the frame and on the opposite side is the Innokin name also stamped into the frame. The gunmetal version has a carbon fiber backing that is slightly padded while the river wood version has a leather like backing that is very slightly padded. Both mods are very sharp and very comfortable and ergonomic to hold and use.

upload_2021-12-29_10-2-1.png

The Kroma 217 can use a 21700, 20700, or 18650 battery with the very nice included battery adapter. The battery is loaded from the bottom of the mod through the slide and flip open battery door. The hinge on the battery door seemed very solid and was easy to open and close. There are four slots in the bottom of the battery door that I believe are for battery venting.

upload_2021-12-29_10-3-13.png

The front of the Kroma 217 reminds me quite a bit of the Kroma R mod as far as using a fire bar with the screen embedded in it. When you receive it there is a sticker on the front of the mode that says to click the fire bar three times to turn the mod on. Below the screen are the plus and minus buttons with the USB-C charging port near the bottom. The display shows the following information.

- Lock/unlock symbol

- Battery indicator

- Set wattage

- Length of time of current puff

- Coil resistance

- Puff counter

- Output voltage while firing the mod

- If in standard Power mode then there will also be an N (normal), S (soft), or H (high) displayed.

If you are familiar with the Sensis or the Z80 then the button operation of the Kroma 217 will seem familiar to you. The Kroma 217 doesn’t have F(0) mode like those two but it does have Coil+ and Refresh which are two of my favorite functions. Coil + is like regular wattage mode but sends a pulse of current through the coil at the end of every puff to extend the life of the coil. Refresh is a separate function that the user can activate that pulses the coil at 40% of the set wattage. It draws liquid into the coil and tries to keep residue from building up on the coil. I tend to think of it as a coil cleaner.

The button/menu operation of the Kroma 217 is as follows.

- Press the fire bar three times to turn the device on/off

- Press the fire bar and + button to clear the puff counter

- Press the fire bar and – button to lock the adjustment buttons which is just indicated but the small lock symbol in the top left hand corner. If you press either adjustment button when locked, there is no message on the screen like I am used to seeing that tells you that the device is locked.

- Press the + and – buttons to enter the menu which has the following options

1. Coil +

2. Power( Wattage or Voltage)

3. Refresh

4. Settings( Time out, Cut off, Device-ID, Reset, Exit)

upload_2021-12-29_10-4-5.png

The tank that comes with the Kroma 217 is the new Z-Force tank and uses a new series of coils. The new Duo-Prime ZF coils that were included are .2 ohm (50-80w) and .3 ohm (30-45w). They have a really interesting design where there are two mesh coils inside each coil. There is an inner and an outer mesh coil. Innokin did a much better job of explaining it than I probably would so here is what their explanation. “ The outer coil increases the capillary action of the cotton wicking material, pulling liquid into the coil head, pre-heating it, and directing it to the inner coil for vaporization, creating a more fully saturated and flavorful vape.”

The tanks come with a nicer drip tip which is a nice change from the usual black tip that comes with most tanks. The 510 connection on the bottom of the tank of course has a gold plated center pin. To open the tank for filling you simply push on the top cap to slide it open and expose the fill port with a gasket seal on it. I’m seeing this gasket on more and more tanks and have mixed emotions on it. I sometimes use a glass dropper bottle and it’s almost impossible to fill with a glass dropper without making a mess. On the other hand, when filling with a standard plastic bottle then there is no mess and if you tilt the tank then no liquid will spill. You’ll have to decide for yourself whether you like the gasket or not.

The Z-Force tank has a nice feature that you can hopefully see in the pictures below. The coils are simply a push in style but the tank has a spring loaded mechanism inside where the liquid is sealed off when the coil is removed and is only able to wick the coil once the coil is inserted thus making coil changes mess free. Nicely done Innokin. The airflow openings on this tank are very different from anything I’ve seen before. There are two openings that are kind of a tear drop shape which make it easy for the user to make small adjustments at a time to hopefully find their perfect airflow.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

It has been a real pleasure testing the new Innokin Kroma 217 kit with Z-Force tank. From the nice size and comfortable ergonomics of the design of the mod to the new ZF coils that are quite flavorful, I have thoroughly enjoyed using both of the samples that were sent to me. I greatly appreciate Innokin sending the two extra boxes of coils so that I can continue to enjoy these tanks.

To me the Kroma 217 mod just screams quality. I honestly didn’t know if I would like the mod due to it using a fire bar instead of a button. I have to be honest that I didn’t really care for it on the Kroma R mods that I had purchased and ended up selling them. I always felt like the fire bar on them was too hard to press. However, the bar on the 217 seems to take just the right amount of pressure. I do think that the adjustment buttons are a little small in my opinion but they have a nice clicky feel to them and do work well.

I also like that Innokin went with the hinged battery door instead of a threaded cap for loading the battery. I immediately went with a 21700 battery since to me it is one of the main selling points of the 217 but did think that the 18650 battery adapter included was rather nice compared to some I’ve seen.

I am very glad that Innokin included the Coil+ and Refresh functions. In my opinion both are very useful for extending coil life. It doesn’t bother me at all that the F(0) function was left off of this mod. It is a neat function but honestly not necessary.

I’d like to thank Innokin and Anna for sending the Kroma 217 kit with Z-Force tank for this review and a big thanks to the readers. You make this possible. Below is a link to the Innokin site if you would like to take a look.

Wotofo Profile Squonk Mod 6.jpg

► Wotofo Profile Squonk Mod; First impressions:
Personally, I like Wotofo's idea of producing a dual-use device. Profile Mod in the Single Battery configuration is basically a Squonk device with compact dimensions with an empty weight of 135g.
The same cannot be said of the configuration with dual 18650; the Mod keeps the same size in width, while in height there are several Chinese dual 18650 Mods on the market that are shorter. However this is to be understood, because the Bottom Feeder system requires pipes that inevitably raise the structure upwards.
Given these premises, the device seems to be built in a solid way, it uses zinc alloy for the frame, transparent plastic for the compartment / battery door. The door is well anchored to the body of the Mod by two powerful magnets, but it is slightly noisy in your hands when you press it.

Wotofo Profile Squonk Mod 7.jpg

When I first turned on the Mod, it was configured in Single battery mode for the Squonk, so on the display there was only one charge indicator (a battery) and the maximum selectable power was 80W. Of course, by removing the squonk bottle and inserting the second 18650 cell, the second charge indicator also lit up and the selectable power went up to 200W.

Wotofo Profile Squonk Mod 8.jpg

► Wotofo Profile Squonk Mod; Side Panels:
The main controls and the color display are all positioned on one side and are inside a screen (black in my case), the buttons are made of plastic, free of anomalous movements. The screen is bright enough and the information displayed is all clearly legible.

On the opposite side, the plastic cover is transparent, with the words "Profle" and "Wotofo" in large letters, at the bottom and on the side there is an opening wide enough to allow you to press the bottle to make the eliquid rise upwards and towards the RDA tank that we will choose to use.

Wotofo Profile Squonk Mod 9.jpg

Some might argue that a closed cover was not included in the package to install when you intend to use the Mod in the 2x18650 version, in fact even the second additional cell (such as the squonk bottle) remains partially uncovered.

Hello

New member with some questions.

I'm a former tobacco user, smoker and smokeless tobacco user. The last thing I used was lozenges that I stopped about 2 years ago. Probably sounds insane that I'd think about going back but I have a mood disorder that is much more stable when I'm using nicotine.

If I decide to use a vaporizer, I'd want one that was discrete, not stinky and as safe as they get given the circumstances i.e., no ingredients that aren't necessary. *Forgot to add I'm quite old but in reasonably good health.

What do cell ratings actually tell us? Part 1B: Resting vs Under-Load Voltages

These voltages show us how the cell reacts to being used, or not used. They aren’t ratings or specs but they are important concepts for being able to best use the datasheet information.

Resting Voltage
This is the voltage of the cell or battery pack when it has had a chance to rest after being used or charged. All of the datasheet specs are based on the resting voltage.

Under-Load Voltage
This is the voltage of the cell or battery pack while it is being used, while it is “under load”. It is always lower than the resting voltage because of the voltage drop (“voltage sag”) caused by the internal resistance of the cell/pack.

This is not the true cell/pack voltage! It is just a lower temporary voltage seen only when it is being used. The voltage rises back up some once you stop. How much it rises depends on on how hard you were using the cell/pack.

Why is the difference between these two important?

The decisions we make about how hard we can use a cell need to take into account the differences between the resting and under-load voltages. It’s also important to mention which one of these is being discussed when talking to someone about cell performance or safety.

For example, the 2.5V low voltage spec for a “standard” li-ion cell is the resting voltage. If we are using a cell and the voltage sags down to 2.5V but bounces back up to 2.8V (or some other voltage) then we have not discharged that cell to 2.5V. The voltage sag that caused the temporarily lower voltage only made it seem like we discharged it that far. In this example we have only discharged it to 2.8V.

But if we used a cell and then stopped for a while (at least several minutes) and the voltage only rose back up to 2.5V then we should not discharge it any further. This cell has had time to settle to its true (resting) voltage and it’s down at the 2.5V low voltage rating for the cell. We should stop using this cell and charge it.

When someone says “never go below 3.0V per cell”, or some other level, it’s important to know if they are talking about the resting or under-load voltage.

Going to 3.0V/cell while being used is a lot less stressful to a cell than taking a cell down to the point where it only rises back up to 3.0V after a couple of hours. Using a cell until it drops to 3.0V means it might bounce back up to 3.3V or even a higher once you stop. But that cell with the 3.0V resting voltage might have been discharged to 2.8V or even a lot lower. This can create more heat and age the cell faster.

Charging Voltage Sag
This is a third example of a “phantom” voltage. While charging a cell or pack you will see the opposite of what happens during discharge. The internal resistance of the cell cause a voltage rise instead of the voltage drop (sag) seen during discharge.

This is what causes the cell voltage to almost always read lower than 4.20V after charging to that voltage. The resting voltage might be pretty high, 4.19V, or it could be a lot lower, 4.15V, if the cell was older and had a lot of internal resistance or if you were charging very quickly.

This usually has very little effect on how completely the cell was charged since most chargers keep going until the current has dropped to a certain level, they are not fooled by this phantom voltage rise.

But if your cells are dropping down to around a 4.15V resting voltage, or lower, then I recommend charging slower to minimize the voltage rise in the cell. Some chargers are more sensitive to this voltage rise that than others and all chargers are affected by it a bit at high charging current levels.

Examples of Resting and Under-Load Voltages
Examples of a cell at its resting voltage are easy to find, just don’t use the cell for a couple of hours. You can get a good idea of its resting voltage after a few minutes, perhaps just a couple of minutes, but it takes up to a few hours to come to its final resting voltage.

The under-load voltage can be seen any time a cell is being used. The harder you use the cell the bigger the difference between the resting and under-load voltages.

If you are a vaper you might have noticed this happening while taking a puff with a regulated device (with a display). The cell voltage/percentage or the number of “battery bars” will drop when you take a puff but then go back up when you stop. The higher the power setting, the larger the voltage drop will be.

If you have ever checked the voltage of your battery pack when riding an electric skateboard or e-bike you might have noticed the voltage dropping whenever you accelerate and then going back up when you are just cruising. This is the voltage sag difference between low power cruising and the high power being drawn from the battery pack when accelerating.

The under-load voltage effect isn’t only visible when comparing it to the resting voltage. The under-load voltage difference can also be seen when using a cell/pack at two different power levels (like when cruising or accelerating with an e-bike).

Using Resting and Under-Load Voltages Properly
If we wanted to always stay above 3.0V/cell (or some other voltage) to extend cell life then we should be paying attention to the resting voltage we bring the cells down to, not the under-load voltage.

This means we can discharge our cells to under 3.0V (or whatever you chose) as long as the voltage rises back up to at least 3.0V in a couple of minutes.

If you stopped when the cells reached 3.0V/cell under load that means you might have only discharged them down to a 3.2V-3.5V (or even higher) resting voltage. This is certainly better for the cell, helping to extend its life even more, but you are missing out on the additional run time you could get by using the cells down to a 3.0V resting voltage.

How much a cell’s/pack’s voltage rises back up when you stop using it depends on how hard you are using the cell/pack. A powerbank user might have to stop at 2.90V to be sure the voltage rises back up to 3.0V. But a high power vaper or PEV rider might be able to run the cells down to 2.5V each and still have them rise back up to over a 3.0V resting voltage. You’ll have to experiment to see how your setup responds.

High power battery pack users should be very careful though if bringing the voltages down low to maximize running time (while still having a decently high resting voltage).

If the cells in the pack are unbalanced or aging, and you do not have a BMS monitoring each cell for low voltage, then you could force one or more cells down to a very low voltage. This can possibly harm the cell.

I recommend monitoring the voltage of each cell, instead of just the pack voltage, to make sure you are not overdischarging any of them. I think 2.5V under load is a good minimum to stay above to give you a bit of a safety margin.

That should give you a little idea of how a cell responds when used and at rest. Knowing how the resting and under-load voltages are different, and how to best use them, is important for getting the most out of your cells. This is true if you are staying well within the cell’s ratings or going far beyond them.
