A lot of folks have had luck with split rings such as those used in key chains. Keep the split ring close to the wrap, and advance as needed. Additionally, relaxing the tension in the wrapper can help.
People will use different methods. I've tried the key rings, paper clip, bobby pins but the 1 thing I keep going back to is ribbon wire. I take a small piece of it and wrap around the wires then use my nylon tipped pliers to flatten the ribbon on the cores. It works every time. If you don't have nylon tipped pliers you can use regular no teeth pliers but be careful cause with those kind of pliers you don't want to put much pressure on the ribbon cause it will make it too tight and won't slide effortlessly along the cores as your claptoning the cores. Hope this helps.
