The best part is this student claims all they are trying to do is, "[...] imploring the readers to “inform [themselves], ask good questions and be responsible” and not to willingly be ignorant of the dangers of a nicotine addiction," when in reality he didn't even inform himself or ask good questions before writing the article. Oh well, at least he's still in school.

@DrMA : I believe the antz are more like some sort of government sponsored One True Faith Sect. Holier Than Thou attitude. Forcing everyone to march towards their definition of salvation. Preaching punishments for non believers. Let's kill the Devil, collateral be damned. Impermeable to common sense and science. The New Inquisition.

With the new software, you can break links using the [ plain]put link here[/plain ] tags.

Don't know why people just don't hit the 'unlink' icon in the editor???

I don't see those icons.

When you hit 'reply' you will see the icons at the top of your reply. there's the B I U, A A a, then the link and the link with an x by it. Highlight the actual link then hit 'unlink'. That kills the link.

You can see it next to your profile at the bottom of every page of a forum except they're grayed out until you hit reply.

Does this also break the link for search engines (Google etc)? Much more important than breaking the link for us mere 'end users';)

That was raised in another thread.

I don't see how using [ plain ]...[ /plain ] which has been suggested here, would be any different - the same 'string' is viewable, just not linked. I don't know exactly how the google bot works - if, for example it takes into consideration a character string that 'looks' like a link but isn't - I would think that would gather simply too much data OR if it is close enough to correspond with a 'known' link - which if that's the case, then adding spaces wouldn't necessarily defeat that either. Likely, only google knows for sure. :- )

Thanks. I found them. The icons are in a different place and are slightly different icons on mine. Now I know what link icons look like, though. I'm sure to recognize variants, from know on.

Glad you found them. But.... lol.... now 'retired' is saying that doesn't prevent the google bots from picking it up. I don't know enough about it to know, other than some mod suggested using [ plain ]... [ /plain ] (without the spaces) but that leaves the same string of characters as 'unlink' does - just without the url blue/red or whatever color and the underline indicating link. And if it's the case that since there's no sign of linkage, that doesn't fool them, then perhaps spaces don't fool them either :) Again, I'd have to be a google bot to actually 'know'

Add spaces to the links to break them please! Google won't "fix" the link that way.

So someone says..... what if they are 'smart bots'? I think you'd have to talk with someone from google directly and even then the tech may be proprietary or a secret formula like Coca Cola.

Thanks! So always spaces and only spaces for junk science links. [ plain ]...[ /plain ] or "Unlink" only if breaking links for other reasons. Example of this was a link to a concentrated flavor site that also sells unsafe to vape oil based flavors. Found it with a search and broke the link so no one would think I was indorsing them. Think I did use spaces but could have used one of the other two ways.

the 'plain' and /plain is what is now recommended by the sticky's edit by Robino. And read what she says about 'spaces'. The 'unlink' does not work all the time. It had worked for me but not on all urls?? So I'l be using 'plain.../plain' despite questions raised in 'google forums' regarding the use - it still appears the best way. See:
