Slippy, I didn't know about the juice traveling along the helix wire. Great point. I'm running this at .34 ohms and yes around the 3mm ID. I was actually getting some juice in my mouth last night so I'll have to take a look at the wick to see if it moved. I could have been pulling to hard too often possibly and maybe "rewicked" it too much. That's another possibility.

Yes I've had it move on me but it moved to the center instead of the sides. Little adjustment with a toothpick should fix it though and that doesn't happen a lot anyway.

There is a decent amount of wick inside the coil itself but very little laying on a front of the actual juice well. I'll take another picture today to show you. And thank you. That makes me want to do more helix builds :)

Yep people were experimenting with Helix wire trying to make a setup that would be just for tasting juices without the use of a wick, some builds even drag the juice from off the deck to vapourize, you can find vids on youtube as regards wickless coil's but in the main what you made yourself is a Helix coil which is the same thing. I wouldn't venture down the path of wickless coils though because without the wick full of juice to keep things cool the rda gets very hot!

I hear you. And I don't want that cause the tank is glass. I'm intentionally trying to keep the vape hot but not to a point that the tank gets hot. I don't want to risk cracking the glass .

Speaking of which I need to rewick this tonight and possibly put a bit more wick than I did yesterday .

You we're totally right slippy. I dripped juice on this yesterday and saw it go towards the post along the helix wire. Absolutely amazing.

So I wicked it same way with a tiny bit more cotton. Working perfect. I'm only vaping 3mg in this but it turns the cotton orange because of the nicotine being vaporized (I'm assuming)

What colour is your juice in the bottle?
Is it ss wire you're using in they coils?

It's literally clear bro, even with 3 mg ni.. It's called Betty by Pinup Vapors. Kind of freaked me out first time I saw this yesterday but then I remembered how cotton gets brown in dippers. Same concept. And that goes for any vape device anyway.

And no SS dude, this is all kanthal. I think lol
I'm pretty sure I didn't use nichrome in this built.

Nope. Kamthal A1 36 gauge. Why you asking bro? Is SS better than Kanthal?

SS has a lower resistance than Kanthal, depends what you run it on and what you are buiding as to if its better But i do think its a little better on the flavour front, maybe a little cleaner tasting, you can get more wraps compared to the same gauge kanthal.
Your coil looked like it had that orange brown tint that you get from SS when you lightly pulse it.

My conclusion after a few builds with Kanthal is that oxidation is ongoing. It's not possible to get a comprehensive oxidation in multi-wire but it does beneficially continue. Meantime hot spots will raise heat levels and cook juice. You may not necessarily see the heat variations depending upon room lighting. Some turns usually at center overwhelm vision blurring a distinction of dissimilar color temps when you dry burn. Often it's abundantly clear only when you photo. Variations in turn-to-turn surface oxidation color will reveal just how consistent your wind is…and consequently, how effective it will be. As oxidation continues tho it may lend to balancing the surface vaporization temps enough that staining is curtailed or diminishes. Good enough for government work.

You really don't want a lot of juice on the coil surface. It's at a much hotter temp than the internal wetted surface and vaporization space itself. It instantly cooks. My impression is that surface temp variations will allow juice at times to bypass the normal vaporization space and escape the wick to reach coil surfaces. This happens I surmise as internal convection and vapor pressures build from excess unbalanced heat pushing fluid to less restriction. These zones and bare coil there are however exceedingly hot where overheating of the juice occurs. There is your staining.

An example would be an end-turn where the wick dangles from gravity sag. But such intermittent compression of the wick may occur anywhere in the wind and be exacerbated by overheating.

All clues…for a better build, next time.

Not sure my above is accurate. Ever get a wick too wet or when you drop juice directly on the coil, that first hit. It'll bite ya. Even if anemic (likely)… that's surface cook-off. Not normal vaporization.

Good luck. :)

You guys certain about that? All this time I thought that the bigger the surface area the better the flavor :(

I do want to avoid cooking the juice though. It almost seems like a simple spaced coil would be a solution but you guys know me - I desperately want something fancy to pretty much be a badass all around, device and the vape.

I was looking last night into corrugated ribbon coils stapled with staggered claps. Your thoughts on that coil regarding cooking of the juice?

I do have tons of nichrome 80 wire but kanthal seems to have better and more consistent and less metallic taste in my personal opinion. Your thoughts on the coil below? I was seriously thinking about trying it but don't want to give up my pretty helixed staple. I need another tank lol

No, me not going to dissuade you from building pretty. It's a great part of the attraction. Just sayin' what to look out for on any build 'cause it don't matter…if it don't vape right.

But it's the wetted contact surface that does the work. That's what you want to optimize and keep reliable in whatever build. Spaced stainless prolly does run cleaner. But I haven't done an (mass) eval comp to tell you whether that's real or perceived, more vapor or not watt-for-watt. Do think they require more power as you should run 'em spaced (they don't build an alumina layer). That usually means making up contact using larger Ø (more power draw).

I like low-profile multiwire for that reason. More bang for the buck.

:D Good luck.

p.s. BTW, really beautiful coil just (in your above post).

Got some rc gears from a local hobby shop today. Gonna screw around with corrugated ribbon builds today lol

Help me understand this guys - there is nothing wrong with that helixed zipper build, it's wicking great, it holds a lot of juice, it's an overall an awesome vape on the rx200s in that avocado. Why the hell can't I just be happy with that? Lol

Please tell me because I don't get it. Is this an addiction to building or something? Last 2 nights I was going to sleep I cuddle up to my girl and all I can think about is what new can I invent in my next build with corrugated wire lol

I thought I got over it already few months ago when I got tired of dripping, apparently I caught another builders bug.

I think you need to go to a hypnotist ;)
There is nothing wrong with your beautiful Helix that you've been enjoying so much lately, leave it in there and go give your lovely gf more cuddles and stuff, stop fiddling about on your own its not good! :D

Now i have to make a confession! my first rda was a Trident and i used to rebuild that thing about six times a day, i rebuilt that thing so much i broke the posts on it

Mine was a plume veil, I miss it, but same concept bro, kept building and being too hard on it, finally it gave out.

Well gentleman, I've JUST had my first attempt at this. 5-6 hours well spent I assume. Girl sitting next to me first on Xbox now watching movies. Aaaaaaand I did this.....

Twisted/spiral frames, double corrugated ribbon core, with walls, stapled (by hand, face palm)

Very nice build :thumb: lets hope it performs as well as your last build ;) is this going in in place of your other Helix build?

I got delivery of my ijoy Limitless today, its a nice bit of kit, am enjoying the vape so far and getting no dry hits :)
I might just put another order in and either get the Avocado or another Limitless but the bigger version with the one coil option, unsure atm i will see how long this tank lasts me first.

I took some pics of my build, i'll post them in here--> Post pictures of your working wick and coil setup
Justadude you should come post your coil pics here also

Thank you slippy :) I'll post them there too. One thing I should mention about "how long avocado lasts", even on a single coil, not very long dude. If it's the only thing you're vaping all day you're gonna fly through juice. The flavor is amazing but it doesn't last as long as it seems. Just a thought for you bud.

As for replacing it with helix, I'm not sure yet. I can totally see why people are getting the goon rda. This coil is seriously wide, and I intentionally tried to keep the core and frames smaller for that very reason. I don't know what it's reading yet cause I didn't mount it.

I did put it to avocado and saw that it just barely would fit if I was to install it. I also realized something last night that I would have to hand wrap only the first staple and the rest could be done on a drill, which would end up looking tighter and cleaner. There is a total of 8-9 strands I believe being stapled on the outside in between the groves of that spiral. It either took me 5 or 6 hours to complete this thing. Stacking it also was a process but I found a shortcut that I might elaborate on later of folks are curious.
