Two posts from today - enjoy!

1. News Review 27th September

This is the week that was….

The recurring theme of the week was the gathering crescendo of support for the Totally Wicked(TW) Legal Challenge to Article 20 of the TPD(Tobacco Products Directive). Also Tobacco Industry reduced risk products and e-cig co. buyouts seemed to attract much debate.

A widely covered story of a 14 year-old schoolboy with an e-cigarette highlighted the grey areas of proxy-purchase and the paradox of under 18’s (prior smoking) e-cigarette usage, which will be further muddied with up-coming laws from October 1st.

2. Diversity in the Marketplace - from Kristin Noll-Marsh, CASAA

My 66 year old, smoking aunt has watched nearly my entire family switch from smoking to vaping over the past 6 years. She never showed any interest – “too much fuss” she said, so we never pushed it. We even set up a smoking area, on our screen porch, for her when she moved in with us a few weeks ago.....

News Review 4th October

This is the week that was….

For the second week, the recurring theme was the Article 20 Legal Challenge with the handover to the Department of Health on the 29th September. This coincided with a large NHS trust going ‘smokefree’ and the proposals for a prison smoking ban.

Rounding off the week was the launch of the ‘Stoptober’ campaign that strangely coincided with the release of “low nic cigarettes” research and how e-cigarettes could affect “Big Tobacco”.

News Review 11th October

This is the week that was…

A relatively quiet news week with no major breaking stories, a few news articles appeared following the release of further studies into Very Low Nicotine Content cigarettes (VLNC), which have been widely ridiculed as impractical, and a thorough waste of research money.

The Welsh Government(WG) released study data clearly demonstrating no Gateway effect in Wales, amusingly, their own data was ignored by a WG ‘spokesperson’ quoting an obscure USA study instead(with very limited numbers) as proof.

Finally of significance, a very interesting study from Dr Christopher Russell was published with a good analysis made by the ever excellent Sally Satel, highlighting how Vapers could help and encourage smokers in their transition, ie a formal ‘buddy’ system( one that haphazardly exists already).
