Video uploaded: Answering my patrons’ battery questions Ep02

In this video on my Battery Mooch YouTube channel I answer additional questions from my patrons on a wide variety of battery-related topics:

“Best all-around 18650 battery” What does that mean?

I’m often asked what the “best” battery is or what the best for a regulated (or mech) mod might be. Unfortunately, the best choice for a particular vaper depends on how hard you’re using the batteries and your vaping style. For vapers with multiple mods, who might like to switch up vaping...

Can I treat these batteries like I do to my phones?

You can use or charge batteries for single-battery mods at any time. But if you have multi-battery mods then only use their sets of batteries after they have all been fully charged together to “rebalance” their voltages. You can recharge sets of batteries at any time, just do so fully before...

Bench Test Results: LG H26 2600mAh 18650...good performer but top contact too easily dented

Heat is a cell’s worst enemy, just what we call a bit warm, but there can be other internal processes that accelerate aging. I don’t know enough to be able to say that any charge rate that doesn’t heat up a cell a lot is okay. I can only recommend staying under the “standard” charge rate for...

Soon to be Released Molicel 21700 5000Mah

Moli rates their cells for less-than-continuous operation for devices like power tools and electric vacuum cleaners. IMO, that 20A rating cannot be used to compare against other cells using true continuous ratings. Assume it’s a 15A cell with a lot of voltage sag as all ultra-high capacity...

Never modify a regulated mod like this!

This was done by a vaper in the Philippines. While I applaud the vapers who safely and responsibly modify devices for their own use, taking a single battery mod and modding it to use two batteries in series is begging for trouble. A single battery mod is designed for 4.2V maximum but if you...

An 18650 rated 100A/160A? Do not use this battery!

DO NOT USE THIS BATTERY! There is no 18650 rated over 30A that we can buy. This damn thing has the most idiotic and dangerous overrating I have ever seen. Crap like this is a plague on our community. It is not made in the USA, it is not using the battery chemistry associated with “IMR”...

Reasons for the thin top contacts on LG H20\H26 batteries?

Safeguards are one aspect of a good battery management system but a good user interface and supporting features are important too. Some packs and devices do it well, some don’t. The ones I’ve designed for my clients have done everything they have wanted them to and nothing they haven’t wanted...

Bench Test Results: LG H26 2600mAh 18650...good performer but top contact too easily dented

These tests below only note the ESTIMATED ratings for these batteries at the time I tested them. Any battery that is not a genuine Samsung, Sony, Murata, LG, Panasonic, Molicel, or Sanyo can change at any time! This is one of the hazards of using “rewrapped” or batteries from other manufacturers...

Reasons for the thin top contacts on LG H20\H26 batteries?

Vapcell rewraps a lot of different gray market OEM cells and uses some China-manufactured cells too. They’ll never say who though. Many companies certainly claim that their cells are made for vaping (they're all meant to be used for vaping, or marketed for vaping) but it’s curious that they’re...

Reasons for the thin top contacts on LG H20\H26 batteries?

All of the cells we use are never meant to be used outside of fully protected battery packs. Any other use is unauthorized and LG wants nothing to do with it. The millions of these they sell to their large commercial/industrial customers will drive their performance characteristics and...

Reasons for the thin top contacts on LG H20\H26 batteries?

Regarding the thin top contacts on the LG H20 and H26 18650’s (and their Vapcell G20 and G26 rewraps).... I would be very surprised if these easily dented contacts were created just to discourage use of these cells by vapers. We are a tiny, tiny market and it’s just not worth the time and...

Bench Test Results: LG H20 2000mAh 18650...good performer but top contact too easily dented

It would run longer in a mech too. Typically they’re taken down to about 3.2V or so (around 3.6V when put on a charger) and the 20S would run perhaps 25% longer.

    Hello

Thank you for the offer but without definitely knowing which cells they are I couldn’t determine much except their present condition. I appreciate your being willing to send them to me though!

    Hello

If you could, check the wrap? I’m always interested in OEM cells I’ve never heard of before.

    Hello

Actually, NVM....try the Sanyo NCR18650GA. It beat the 35E by a lot in some testing I recently did for my patrons at those “higher” power levels.

    Hello

I’ve never heard of the Samsung 35QE. Do you have a link? A search came up empty. The 35E is an 8A-rated battery though. Definitely useless for anything over 15W each or so due to the huge voltage sag. Definitely worth trying for a 30W two battery setup though.
  19. Mooch

    Hello

You’re at up to 60W per battery in that two-battery device. At above about 55W per battery the Sony VTC5A actually starts to run for longer than the 30Q, VTC6, or HG2. This is because the VTC5A is more efficient and holds its voltage up better for longer at this high power levels. Try the...

    Hello

Samsung 30Q’s are rated at 15A continuous by Samsung. :) The datasheet mentions operation at 20A though.
