OK, is there some kind of clear tape or other material that I can put on the bottom of my Pinch that will protect if from scratches and won't leave a messy residue when it's removed?
Go the CA finish, not wax, and you're good to go.

Towns have been considered flooded with less liquid than the VG residue in my house.

What Dan is saying is with a CA finish you won't need to worry about scratches, it's tough as nails. My original Pinch has been set on everything from my desk to concrete and coquina and still looks like it did day 1 :thumb:

I'm in way over my head now. I can see little scratches on the bottom after just a short time. I want to prevent more.

But I already have a little scratching and it's never touched anything remotely abrasive. Well, my wife has handled it on a few occasions.....

well, I didn't want to speak to soon, as I don't know of any non-residual tape or tricks. . . . didn't want to quash any discussion of creative ideas. what I can contribute, BDH, is the notion that the bottom of the mod is more-or-less an isolated plane, and I can probably refinish just that area for you pretty quick'n'easy. Meaning to say, don't stress about it; and know that I'm happy to do that for you when you want. Like, just enjoy the mod knowing it can be rejuvenated.

. . . if that helps.

It's pretty simple really, if you want to have a sticker under it just cut a piece of the thick sellotape in the shape of the base and stick it. Sticky residue can easily be removed. Personally I'm not worried about the my mod's hiney, surface scratches will develop but as Peter told ya it's easily fixable.
