My gal pals and I started a walking / hiking program a few months ago. Many of us are ex runners or other sports but have bad knees or backs now  so we are just doing a lot of walking. We live in the middle of the national forests so there are more trails and places to explore than we may ever get thru, not to mention the lakes and rivers nearby. Sometimes we just do it on each other's property, we all have a lot of acreage.

It was rather alarming to realize that most people only go about 3-4,000 steps a day, not enough to keep heart healthy, etc. so we are estimating right now and trying to get to 10K steps a day, that would be about 5 miles but includes a lot of other walking

We decided to buy each other pedometers for birthdays (all our birthdays are in march ), but having trouble finding simple ones. I don't want a lifestyle counter like the fit wrist bands, and don't want to have to hook up to a phone or computer etc. We just want simple ped to count steps, compute distance, and maybe calories burned.

Does anybody know of any good ones? Its really confusing trying to find 1 or 2 that you don't have to take a class to program.

Zan, love the fitbits. What kinda workouts and does the fitbit count all the steps like on a vertical i.e. versaclimber?

For right now, I wanted something I could stop and start, because I wanted to separate my hikes from overall daily activity as well.

I might buy a fitbit for my birthday though.

Got an ozeri 4x3 razor and an Omron, so I'm gonna pit those 2 against each other for accuracy. :)

It focuses mainly on your daily activity, the track exercise option it has, is related to cardio work outs. The way it counts is just by the swinging motion of your hand, not sure though, but it could also count just by the vibration of moving.

It can tell how main flights of stairs you travel up, but I wouldn't trust it so much.

Thing that makes a fitbit so interesting is the bluetooth integration and sleep tracker, if you can pay attention to the app you can it will even keep track of your calorie intake but you have to enter it in yourself.
