10 years is a long time, how I'm packaging nic

10 years is my stockpiling bench mark. My stash might last longer. I just repackaged a one liter bottle of nic for the long haul and decided to share what I did in case others find it useful. This bottle might not get opened for 5-10 years. It will be around so long it'll be like a member of the family. The biggest threat I see is that it gets dropped and broken.

First I peeled the label off the original plastic bottle and taped it down to the amber glass bottle. Then I put the glass bottle in a heavy zip lock bag and taped it tight to the bottle. Then I wrapped that in several wraps of thin bubble wrap and taped that down so there is good cushion on the ends. Finally I put all that in one more zip lock bag and taped that tight to itself. Finally I'll label the outside of the zip lock bag. I figure if the bottle is dropped and breaks the glass may penetrate the first zip lock bag but may be not the second. Recovering the nic from all that plastic might be a pain but at least most of it can be recovered. If we really need these stockpiles nic is going to be precious stuff.

P.S. When it's time to open this bottle I'll divide into 4 250ml active bottles. I took a photo of the label so there can be no confusion when I make the outer label. May be I'll attach a printout of the photo. It's important that who ever opens the bottle is confident about what's inside.

I liked the idea of splitting it up into smaller 60ml bottles for long term storage myself. Less loss and clean up if there is breakage or a spill, removing smaller amounts for use without having to wait for a full liter to come to room temp to break it down and refreeze over and over.

For now I'm stocking for more than one person. To use only 60 ml bottles would require 130 of them. That would require a stand alone freezer and I'm not planninig to go there at this point. My long term nic stays in 1 liter bottles. When needed 1 liter is divided into 4 active bottles. When the active bottles are empty the process is repeated. That's my plan.

Yep, I leave all my nic that is in Storage in the 1 liter bottles, wrapped in plastic. When it comes time to crack one open, this is what I plan on doing -

1. Pull out of the freezer and let the bottle naturally reach room temp
2. Transfer to 15ml bottles
3. Store 1/2 of them in the freezer and the other 1/2 just keep in a cool dark place

Why such small bottles? Currently it takes me 9-10 months to empty a 250 ml bottle. In that time I will open it may be 15 times. Typically I'll take 10 ml or 20 ml at a time for a batch. What I observed with the first 250 ml active bottle is no noticable change over 10 months after 15 times opening.

My freezer door has a small shelf above and larger shelf below. The small shelf will hold 4 250 ml bottles lying sideways. The lower shelf will hold 5-6 1 liter bottles standing up. Any other scheme needs a stand alone freezer. I might eventually do that and may be have some extra nic too but I want to see an increased threat.

Exposure to air degrades the nic, I'm going to insure that when I'm using the nic I keep exposure to air at a minimum. Thus why when I break open a bottle I'll transfer it into smaller bottles. But if you don't see any degradation with a 250ml bottle I very well may just transfer it to 120ml bottles.

Thanks for the scoop

Everybody agrees that air and light aren't good for nic but my first experience is opening a bottle of nic 15 times over 10 months until it was empty did not degrade the nic at all. May be things would be different if the mixing was from a 1 liter bottle opened 100 times but I'm only going to open a 1 liter bottle once.

Cool Beans!
This really makes it much easier, wasn't really looking forward to having so many small bottles. But 120ml would work well for me, mmm even may shoot for 240ml bottles .... But since I've got a lot of 120ml bottles already more than likely go with them, just keep 4 bottles out working and the other 4 in freezer.

Awesome!

Thanks again for the scoop

My nic is in 8oz. Boston rounds sealed in vacuum freezer bags.
These bags were bought to store homemade summer sausage.
BUT they fit the bottles perfect. They are standing up in a basket in the deep freeze.

I work out of a 120ml plastic bottle.

Just had an idea to try the bags and it was like they were made for that size bottle! Food Saver brand.

I broke mine to 250l. Put 3 in freezer and kept one out as a working bottle

The bottom bottles are 16oz.Top are 8oz and 1 liter bottle. I have added 2 more liters bottles since this pic. 200mg NIC. I still need to bubble wrap the rest of the 8 &16 bottles. Locking freezer! View attachment 581857
May be I'll go the medical freezer route eventually. I'll still be padding and packaging the bottles. I keep my active bottles in the freezer too. Anything times 10 years add up. I'm trying to keep everything top notch but simple as possible. I haven't owned an insulated cooler for some years. When I know what my long term stash is going to be I think I'll get exactly the right size for the stash when the power goes out or I'd have something for moving it in a hurry if that comes up. It's another reason to keep the bottles individually padded.

If we went looking may be there is a padded container out there that would work or a smart way to make one or may be zip lock bags, bubble wrap and tape is the best solution after all.

Great minds think alike. I have 2 litres in freezer the same way.

I also have 2l broken into 50 and 120ml bottles for nearer term usage.
